I'm looking forward to picking up an 8 when the discounts roll in around holiday time this year. There's absolutely no reason to rush out and buy one now, since once the X comes out, that'll take away all of the attention from the 8.

Except that iPhone 8:
+ is $300 cheaper (with the exact same internals as the more expensive model)
+ has Touch ID
+ can be used one-handed
+ doesn't have a big notch cut out of top of apps, videos and photos

Don’t forget subcategory for it having same internals

Because of the features of the phone I’m assuming- the x scored less in the benchmarks test. So in terms of power the Iphone 8 plus and 8 are the top two phones on market. With x being 3rd

Really this is more the truth in advertising -

Iphone 8 - 7s which normally would have come this year
iPhone 10 - next years model

As an iPhone 6 owner, I am leaning toward the 8 mostly due to the cost. Its still a nice upgrade from the 6.

None of these phones will last forever, in a few years, rinse and repeat.

I believe that the aperture for at least 1 of the two lenses is wider in the X. At work and can't go look at the spec sheets now.

I'm having buyers remorse, just got myself an iPhone 8 Plus yesterday and I can't see any real advantage/difference from my iPhone 6s Plus, the only thing is the portrait mode (kinda useless without the front camera like the iPhone X).

Any way, I might go to T-Mobile and return it and hopefully can land an iPhone X on launch day, even if I get it in January, the 8 Plus is not worth it coming from a 6s Plus, I just really need a feel of a new iPhone, the iPhone 8 doesn't give me that feel.

I just don't understand why you would buy this phone vs the X. Most people buy iphones to have the best experience. There are some really nice Android phones that can be purchased based on price point. I am waiting for the X.

I agree. The 6s is a great phone. I am waiting for the X.

Gotta call this out. I really like my new black 8 for lots of reasons, and the glass looks fantastically sleek. Gorgeous piece of kit, but no one should be out there thinking it’s “grippy.” It’s thin, smooth as, well, glass, and slippery as hell. Needs a bumper/case or you will drop it. Pity ‘cause it’s so pretty.

Everybody has different levels of dry to sweaty palms. Obviously, the sweatier the palm the easier the grip. Glass is more effective than aluminum in this case.

Only if you count only CPU, the X actually better uses the other functions on the SOC so it would be arguable if it has "less power". Its because it uses the rest of the SOC more (thus generating heat) that it has slightly lower CPU scores (a diff of about 5%)

I have an iPhone 6. A couple months ago I left it out in the rain and, thinking it was toast, went out and got a 7. I quickly came to the conclusion that the 7 is the same damn thing as the 6. A couple of days later, after a long bath in a bowl of rice, my 6 turned on. I took it to a 3rd party shop and a guy replaced a couple of parts. It cost me 80 bucks and my 6 worked like new. I returned the 7.

I, too, feel a repeated urge to have some shiny new thing. I try to convince myself that a couple of barely significant spec upgrades will justify the money spent. I will have a new toy to play with. I, too, have the bug that brings people to forums like these to weigh out their big decisions with fellow consumers. Thing is, the only winners are Apple, the telecom industry and, the great sickness of greed and consumption that is quite literally destroying the planet.

Children as young as 7, essentially treated as slaves, are mining the cobalt used in these batteries.
We're mining rare earth metals at unsustainable rates.
The list goes on and on. Easy enough to Google.

Still, the Apple A11 Bionic chip in the 8 is definitely more appealing than the A10 Fusion chip in the 7. Wait a sec... No it isn't. I really don't care. The amount of attention I have to pay to notice that this year's model is ever so slightly snappier is silly. To me. I have no plans to stop using a smartphone anytime soon. But I can very easily be happy with the one I have (the one that's essentially indistinguishable in a case from this year's hot new thing) until it comes down to real need, because, well, overconsumption, climate change and human rights.

I received my 8 plus this morning, and have been enjoying my new toy all day. To each their own!
I got mine too. Beautiful iPhone. Upgraded from a 6S Plus. Feels good in the hand - I’m thinking of skipping a case.

For what it’s worth, my UPS guy told me he only had 4 to deliver yesterday. In the past he’s had lots and lots on launch day.

So, seems like people are waiting for the X, but I wonder when the delivery slips for many weeks if people will realize that the 8 is not too shabby.

And don't get me wrong, yes, of course I can see the speed difference and the few little details on the 8 Plus, if this was the only iPhone this year, I would be more than happy with the upgrade, but just knowing there's a better iPhone coming out in a month, makes me regret the purchase and that's why I'm returning it.

The other thing that changed my mind, first I really hated the stupid notch, like really hated it, but after seeing pics every single day, I don't care about it any more, and the more I read about Face ID it will probably do a good job, and the lack of a home button is something that I will get use to in a few days.

My two cents.

This video is cringeworthy to waste such a good phone... drop tests vs the 7plus...

http://bgr.com/2017/09/22/iphone-8-vs-iphone-7-drop-test-video/

Check the Audi R8 in the garage when dropping the iPhones off ladder height.

It may pay well to create numpty testing for numpties.

Honestly, I'm still digging my (relatively) new silver SE.

What's old is new?
Like you, love my SE.
And show no interest on gifting money to Cook and company until (if/when) a new-gen SE shows cause. [big if/when]

Under iOS 11 the SE works as a charm.

It's officially iPhone launch day, and MacRumors videographer Matt stopped by the Palo Alto Apple Store this morning to pick up some new products to test out. After running into Apple CEO Tim Cook and COO Jeff Williams, who were also hanging around the store, Matt walked away with a Space Gray iPhone 8 and a Gold iPhone 8 Plus.

Matt went hands-on with both products to give MacRumors readers still on the fence about purchasing a chance to see them up close.

Apple's Gold iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are using a new shade of the color that's almost a meld of last year's Gold and Rose Gold shades. It's a rosier color with more red in it than past iPhone models, and it looks great paired with the glass body. The Space Gray is a darker shade that's almost similar to the Matte Black of the iPhone 7, and it too looks great with that shiny glass finish.

Because of the glass body, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus are heavier than past iPhones, but at the same time, easier to hold, both due to small thickness increases and the grip of the glass itself.

With the new speaker enhancements, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are loud, and the True Tone display looks different, but it's not a major change over previous-generation devices.

Apple's iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are available for purchase starting today online and in Apple retail stores around the world. The iPhone 8 starts at $699, while the iPhone 8 Plus starts at $799.

iPhone 8 will be the worst seller ever at first, since it is still a lot of money and the X is looming over it. Apple will soon discontinue the 7s to save face, and all will be well. The 7s and the 8s and the X cannot coexist, the 7s have to go. Apple will need to lower the prices of the 8s. But the X will outsell all phones ever. Everybody I know is going for a X.

Really?
Quite a lot of us won't be spending even a dollar this time around. {judging by previous comments here and on other sites}
The proof of that will be about 2 months after the X launches, once all of the hardcore "I don't care what it costs" crowd get their hands on one. I'm on the fence myself to get one, but I definitely know I won't be replacing my 6s with the pretty much identical 8.

Went from the 6 to the 8. Its an awesome phone. Not "exciting" exactly because its not some huge leap forward but it is completely refined. that and iOS 11 gives you the perfect culmination of this phone design. Seeing people frustrated that going from 6s or 7 to 8 wasn't a big jump that they are having trouble justifying is just dumb. Of course you are having trouble justifying....because you didn't need it. the 6s was a huge spec bump over the 6 and brought with it haptic and other features. if you have 6s or up you don't need to upgrade unless you really want something new for the sake of new. But yes you will be disappointed. Do you also buy a new computer every 2 years and expect it to be a huge spec bump? because its not. This is not how the world works..... even the 6 was still pretty solid. But yah. Just don't buy the 8. its not for you yet. next year or the ear after is. Or get the X if you really want to find something to throw your money at. But quit complain about the 8. Its an awesome phone with a beast processor. a fantastic update from the 7.

Edit - just a note that my 6 died. If it handn't of died I would have waited 1 more year.

Could be. I just think it’s a little misleading for the article to suggest that because it’s glass it’s automatically grippy. People should really handle it and see. I was surprised at how slippery it feels. It does reflect quality, but I’m very glad I have a bumper on it.

I'm sorry but the 7 is nothing like the 6. It's blazingly fast compared to the older 6. My 6 Plus felt slow and constantly had memory issues. The 7/7+ was a HUGE upgrade from the 6. Not so much from the 6s/6s+.

There's really not much to review beside showing a glass back and wireless charging (which isn't new). What's missing is some sort of AR demo. At the store yesterday, I was hoping to test that out but there were no AR apps installed. So basically I there to play w/ an ip7s... There wasn't much to try or play with since it's practically the same phone as the past 2 years.

I think the iPhone 8 and smaller iPhones were produced to help hide the price increase for the “top tier iPhone”. When the 6 came out the “best iPhone” price jumped from 699 to 799. Now with the xXit has jumped from 799 to 999. There would have been a large amount of people waiting in the wings of the iPhone X was the only new iPhone. Next year the 7 or 6s will disappear and there will only be an iPhone Xs at 999, the iPhone X will move to 799, and everything will filter down from there to 399. But the end result will be the price of Apple’s latest and greatest only being obtainable at $999.

The only thing tempting about the 8 Plus coming from my 7 Plus is the Portrait Lighting Mode. I use Portrait Mode almost exclusively and would have sone fun with the new lighting feature . But is it worth hundreds of dollars more than the 7 Plus, no way. For anyone with a 6 or 6S or older, it’s a compelling phone.

Registered just for this post. Very well said.

In the end a lot of people in here are sick, trying to fulfill parts of their life with stuff which they think makes them happy (at least for a few days). I have the same consumer urges sometimes and I am still trying to fight them.

I have an iphone 5 btw and it works :)

really?
watch closely at samples of that "ready for instagram" lightning modes.. it's mostly low level photoshop.
if that's what you're tempted for, you can feel at ease.

I’m loving the bigger screen and zippiness of the 8 plus. Many are disappointed by it, but it truly is an upgrade for me in terms of size and performance. I’ve been enamoured with it all day. I’ve been averaging three years per phone. So while it is incredibly expensive, it’s an easier pill to swallow knowing I’ll have it for 3 years. I would never spend this much if I had an itch for a new device every year.
There is some statistics around that just 2% of iPhone customers buy a new phone every year. I think it only makes sense if you have a family, everyone on a different iPhone, and every year you buy one new iPhone and each iPhone is then handed down, so everyone gets an improved phone.
