I looked at them. Was disappointed it wasn’t molded or with room for a hard shell. I passed on this flappy leather accessory and went for a toastmade case and an in case sleeve.

The color of the sleeve is significantly off in the video due to MR’s chosen color adjustments. I bought one as soon as it was released, and wrote the first 13” review on apple.com. In reality the color is closer to Apple’s images, albeit slightly darker in person.

When Apple introduced refreshed MacBook Pro models back in July, the company also debuted new Leather Sleeves that are designed to fit 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro models.

In our latest YouTube video, we went hands-on with one of the new Leather Sleeves to see whether or not they're worth the $179 to $199 price tag.

Available in Midnight Blue, Saddle Brown, and Black, the Leather Sleeves are similar to the previously available Leather Sleeves for the 12-inch MacBook lineup. The colors match some of the colors of Apple's Leather iPhone case options.

Apple's Leather Sleeves are simple and no-frills, made from a high-quality European leather with careful stitching around the outer edges and an Apple logo front and center. Inside, there's a soft microfiber lining.

Four circles at the bottom of the sleeve match the feet of the MacBook Pro, so this is a sleeve that's only going to work with the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro models from 2016 and on.

When not in use, the Sleeve can be used as a little mat for your MacBook Pro, protecting it from the surface beneath. Unfortunately, there's no access to the USB-C port when the MacBook Pro is in the Sleeve, so it can't be used while charging.

All in all, the Leather Sleeve is going to offer up protection from scratches and bumps, but there's no drop protection here. Most people may want to go with a cheaper option, but at the $179 to $199 price point, Apple hasn't skimped on quality.

What do you think of Apple's Leather Sleeves for the MacBook Pro? Let us know in the comments.

For a split-second I thought that said “MacPad Pro,” and I heard the sound of a record needle being dragged violently across the grooves.

Duuuddeee... a MacPad Pro... du.u.u.u.uuddeee... just trying to imagine what that would look like.

Probably less than the leather sleeve.
[doublepost=1533678525][/doublepost]My issue with this sleeve is not so much the premium price (which we've all come to expect from Apple), but the seeming lack of quality of the product. The consensus seems to be among those who have handled one is that it doesn't "feel" like a $200 product. Gruber said it felt like a subpar leather product when compared to Apple's leather cases for the iPhone and iPad. That tells me that if they made the MacBook leather sleeve out of the same quality leather that the iPhone and iPad cases use, they probably would've ended up charging $400 or more. Even the people that make those decisions at Apple probably thought that price sounded ludicrous for a laptop sleeve so they opted for a lesser quality product which they decided to sell for $200.

Interesting because I own the 12” iPad Pro leather sleeve and the quality is impeccable. I thought this laptop sleeve would have been the same quality leather

Is there an alternative to this for a quarter of the price? I need something like this but i'm not paying $200. I want something that's snug and exactly the same size as the 15" MBP

Haven't found any other cases as high of quality, you say?

Kasper Maison Envelope Sleeve. Very high-quality Italian leather/stitching, foldover flap with magnetic closure that holds the laptop in better, allows for charging the laptop while in the sleeve, allows for comfortable carrying with no sharp edge by holding the foldover side down, and is just overall great. Been using mine for almost a year and a half regularly and it still looks fantastic. $140.

Much as I like Apple, this is indeed too overpriced. But then, I think their iPhone cases are too. The leather wallet case I use for mine does cost more than the Apple cases, but it is more than twice as much material and is superior to any case product sold in the Apple Store. Nearly two years of hard use and it's still looking great. It's a Bonaventura Folio. I paid $160; looks like current pricing is less.

Both can be found on Amazon.
Ok let me get this straight. You have a $2k laptop, and you are complaining that Apple’s sleeve is $40 more expensive than a third party one, which is also over $100 for a sleeve? Seriously?

As the proud owner of a bunch of iPod socks (which are still in use) I can say that these sleeves are completely ridiculous.

I also have an iPod sock for the chubby iPod Nano. I didn't think they sold them in single packs, which means at some point we had the whole set.

Ipod socks were just ridiculous, not ridiculously priced though. :)

There are a couple of options (which you can read about in the laptop case thread in the MBP forum here at MR.

For leather, there is the sleeve made by Harber London. £65. I’m interested in this myself:

For non-leather, I’m thinking about giving this rad tech sleeve a go, only $31 for most colors:

This is a top quality product at a very fair price. Your MacBook Pro deserves one of these sleeves. There's nothing else like it on the market.

I'm happy Apple is innovating around protecting our devices on top of everything else they engineer to perfection.

[doublepost=1533730237][/doublepost]Had my own leather sleeve custom made years ago for my mpb retina. Only cost about $30. Still works great. This one from Apple is ridiculous.

What "innovating around protecting" is this sleeve offering, given that two corners are exposed, the charging port is hidden and it can't be zipped or closed to protect against even the briefest shower, if you're caught outside?

i had the apple watch leather loop, 2 iphone leather cases and one ipad leather case. all were very poor quality, especially considering the sky-high price. all of them showed significant wear and tear after a year, losing color or just evaporating. i’ve had higher quality leather products for a fraction of the price, that were not a 1/10 milimeter color-coating with the leather equivalent of a mcchicken-patty below.

granted that‘s apple - they seem to make a lot of money just with accessoires - but i‘m very sceptical that they will ever make a leather accessoire that even approaches the quality of it‘s electronics hardware.

Never knew golden cows existed. Great skin!

I need to know more about the European leather. Was it processed by gnomes in Scotland and then shipped by night train to Italy for final stitching? I’m a very discerning shopper when buying leather products, and like it to have been touched by the harsh rays of the sun. Does the packaging give any indication of the history of this leather case?

The leather was softened from blood of the stigmata emanating from the statue of mother Theresa.

Except you'll now need something to protect your $200 sleeve from scratches and bumps...

True enough. That's hardly a new concept, though. Fine leather luggage has often been protected in transit by canvas covers. Louis Vuitton luggage comes with protective felt bags (intended for storage of the bag, not in-transit). You can even find inexpensive protective luggage covers today at Bed Bath and Beyond.

But then, a trip to LouisVuitton.com will turn up leather, MacBook Pro-sized "pouchettes" for $1,000+ (USD).

Speaking as someone who loves his leather Apple iPhone cases, I understand the attraction of a nice, old-fashioned piece of leather enclosing a piece of high tech. Whether it's suitable for a particular person's needs, ego, sense of style, etc. depends on the person.

There's either buy or not buy. There is no wrong.

...then you'd need more money than sense to buy that, too. Now, if I thought anybody cared how much I'd spent on luggage, I'd buy the canvas cases and stick my cheap'n'cheerful cases inside so people thought they were expensive...

Plus, if carrying expensive stuff, the last thing I'd do is put it in an expensive-looking, branded, case. Might as well write "steal this one!" in large letters on it.

Oh, I'm sure you could do better than that - come on, pile on moooorrrreeee gold & diamonds...

I can come to terms with wealthy people buying super-expensive clothes and jewellery for occasions where they want/need to look glamorous because that's the function of such things - especially if they are genuinely handmade by craftspeople and, hence, unique. What seems stupid is people paying premium prices for what is still, basically, mass-produced, factory-made stuff with a famous badge stuck on. These sleeves certainly fall into that category (and I hope Apple don't let that business model contaminate their computers...)
