A hands-on for a featureless leather sleeve. o_O

Anyway, it’s a bit exxy, but if you want a sleeve that doesn’t really offer protection for your laptop, but looks pretty, the price isn’t THAT bad. The Apple premium on this is probably $20-40 more than a comparable leather sleeve from another company.

Lol. It’s Apple so not surprised. Looks nice but not worth it to me.

you wrote this article and then embedded a video YET you failed to actually put a simple URL to the product listing on apple's website. WHY?

I really love the sarcasm of your comment!
Indeed Apple, since Tim, has become too greedy. That's OK if you ship, at least, products made to be repairable. Now it has become a disposable expensive products company.
Apple is generous: that’s only 6% of the price of the laptop.

I’m not against leather at all really, but after being in a Tesla with their great “vegan leather”, everytime I see something leather it just seems unnecessary. Don’t get me wrong, a floppy case like this already seems pretty unnecessary, lol, but even more so being leather.

Great accessory for telling everyone you have more money then you need. Hopefully it will help you get a date.

Sure! you easily will get a date with a gold digger who will eventually get half of your bank account! it’s just a matter of few years after this great shopping :D

...then you'd need more money than sense to buy that, too. Now, if I thought anybody cared how much I'd spent on luggage, I'd buy the canvas cases and stick my cheap'n'cheerful cases inside so people thought they were expensive...

Plus, if carrying expensive stuff, the last thing I'd do is put it in an expensive-looking, branded, case. Might as well write "steal this one!" in large letters on it.

Oh, I'm sure you could do better than that - come on, pile on moooorrrreeee gold & diamonds...

I can come to terms with wealthy people buying super-expensive clothes and jewellery for occasions where they want/need to look glamorous because that's the function of such things - especially if they are genuinely handmade by craftspeople and, hence, unique. What seems stupid is people paying premium prices for what is still, basically, mass-produced, factory-made stuff with a famous badge stuck on. These sleeves certainly fall into that category (and I hope Apple don't let that business model contaminate their computers...)

Have you shopped for one-of-a-kind, hand-made leather goods lately? You certainly can't get them at Apple's price. Even Louis Vuitton's goods are factory-made, in quantity. That last paragraph is the kind of statement made by the wealthy to deride the middle class. There are people who love the look and feel of leather goods who feel they are being absolutely sensible when they buy factory-made.

Yet earlier, we see the "More money than sense" argument. That is a classic criticism that can be leveled at nearly anyone, for any reason. Any purchase that exceeds the bare minimum needed for functional utility can be painted with that brush. "Oh, the unconscionable excesses of the rich!" "Oh, the social climbing of the bourgeoisie!" "Oh, the folly of the poor!"

No one, even a cloistered monk, is immune from that analysis. It's just a matter of which "excess" they choose. Those who have taken a vow of poverty may still, at harvest time, treat themselves to extra-large servings of perfectly-ripe fruit from the monastery orchard. Wasn't the fat monk a favored stereotype of the Reformation?

One can also argue that the time spent posting in this forum is an unnecessary luxury; a waste of precious time that can be more profitably spent on other pursuits.

I never suggested you could - because Apple's stuff isn't "one-of-a-kind, handmade leather goods". Point is, you can pay a lot less for a leather, factory-made laptop bag that (bearing in mind that Apple aren't famous for their leather goods) was just as good if not better.

Even Louis Vuitton's goods are factory-made, in quantity.

Yes, that my point: all you're really getting for the designer price is the name tag. What might you be able to get if you forgo the famous label?

There are people who love the look and feel of leather goods who feel they are being absolutely sensible when they buy factory-made.

...which doesn't have to include an eye-watering markup for the trendy name tag.

Any purchase that exceeds the bare minimum needed for functional utility can be painted with that brush.

...sure, and I certainly don't always buy the bare minimum myself. My problem is more with premium-priced products that don't meet the bare minimum (e.g. don't protect the whole computer) or who's expensive nature defeats the whole object (e.g. luggage or laptop cases that are so expensive that you'll fret if they get scuffed). Do a bit of research in virtually any market and you'll probably be able to sniff out the price point where you stop paying for a better product and start paying for conspicuous consumption.

Wasn't the fat monk a favored stereotype of the Reformation?

Do you long for that "fat monk" look but can't afford the usual price of $allyourworldlygoods? All you really need is a habit, a razor blade, a lot of pies and one weird tip that the Pope doesn't want you to know! No praying, celibacy or meditation required! Click here to get monked! Free piece of the True Cross when you place your first order. Amen. :->

Ok let me get this straight. You have a $2k laptop, and you are complaining that Apple’s sleeve is $40 more expensive than a third party one, which is also over $100 for a sleeve? Seriously?

No, I have a $4k laptop, and am complaining about the inaccurate text in this article. I'm also claiming that the aftermarket sleeve, which has been around for much longer, is a superior design to Apple's. I thought others might appreciate a reference to a good product. But I'm sure there's plenty who don't and prefer trollolol posts such as yours. Congratulations!
