Also. As an aside. If the hump was longer up the case then it would be caught in shot by the ultra wide.
It’s a very very wide lens. I’ve caught my fingers creeping into shot holding the phone to take a photo.

As another aside using the camera button puts your hands in a natural position to help eliminate the fingers in shot on the ultra wide.

These cases are ugly beasts, but I like the utilitarianism. I wouldn't hesitate to own one if I often needed extended battery life. I applaud Apple for not trying to make them look like something they aren't.

It is a pretty ugly attachment. I must say i owned all the iPhones except the first one and the x. I am getting the best battery life on any of those i have used on the 11. It is the first iPhone i used that easily last a complete day and often has at least 50 percent charge left after a days use.

Those who are buying this- why? Do you go on long hikes or go places where you don’t have a charger?

Yeah, I do go on long hikes. Apart from using mapping apps for navigation, I'm OCD about checking my fitness tracking stats. I even monitor my heartrate via my phone whenever I am wearing long sleeves (in particular when there are multiple layers of long sleeves). My top battery consumption app is the fitness tracking app, directly behind this is the category of audio playing apps. All other apps are below 5%.

my wife could actually use a battery case with all the hours of phone use she gets at work throughout the day. We ended up all upgrading to 11's this year without really expecting to upgrade anything, and while she is happier with the battery life she gets now over her 8, she still finds herself in the teens at the end of the day.

Unfortunately there Really isn't much out there that's also comfortable to stash in a back pocket, let alone front pocket.

the camera button is pretty intriguing to me but not enough to drop $120 for the future. Is it possible we see a dedicated button in future iPhone builds? I can dream. Theoretically you could achieve this with a volume button, if I'm not mistaken. Assuming you're not playing any audio at the time, I do believe the volume buttons are otherwise "inert" until you unlock the phone.

An underappreciated benefit of a battery case is that it reduces wear on the lightning port and the original battery, increasing the useable life of your phone.
Technically true but we still have a launch day iPhone 6s kicking around. It gets charged every day sometimes plugged in multiple times. We've had thousands of plug ins at this point. The cables crap out far sooner than the ports. At least in my experience.

I think it's awesome. Very ugly utilitarian, which is so unlike Apple these days. That camera button is just crazy good.

I want.

Well. Off the cool aid and now the phone has been used 12 hours. Pretty much as constantly as possible. Loads of calls and watched some football etc etc. Case died ages ago. Phone battery 40%.

I know i am agreeing with you.

if i had a desk job where my phone went from charging at home to charging in the car to charging on my desk back to charging in my car on the way home, then i can see why you would rarely need this, but unfortunately i have no way to keep my phone charged once i leave the house.

Examples of situations where I’ve successfully relied on the prior smart battery packs:

1) family vacations, e.g. Disneyland. Very draining on battery because:
(a) my sony cameras use an iPhone app that runs in the background to synchronize gps information into the photos
(b) i take a lot of photos with the camera app
(c) i use apps on the phone to get around (e.g. Disney app to get fast passes or check line lengths, or maps app to find my way around town, etc)
(d) while waiting in lines, i use the phone to keep myself busy (answering work emails, reading docs, surfing the news)
(e) these tend to be very long days, with active use over a 12-hour-or-so period.
2) work travel
(a) on travel days I can easily be using my phone for more than 12 hours between time zone changes, flights, sitting in airports and ubers, etc.
(b) heavy use while traveling (music, videos, Uber, maps, reading and responding to work mail, reading news, etc.)
3) swim meets
(a) my kids spends 5 minutes in the pool, but we sit there 6 or 7 hours.
(b) the phone keeps us entertained while we wait, and also is used to track meet results and keep track of seeds and event timing

In each of those situations, in the past, I’ve run my battery down to zero, even the old “plus”-sized phones which had pretty great battery life. I relied on battery packs with built-in lightning cables or with add-on lightning cables. The smart battery case is a much more elegant solution.

Well we can’t all be at the cutting edge of fashion so it’s ok if you don’t want to spend your own money on something. Street-cred is something money can’t buy.

So far, the new camera button has been about as unreliable for accessing the Camera app as pressing the lock screen camera icon. If it doesn't prove better (as in flawless) over the next few days, the case is going back.

A couple of things, I have the max pro and there's no way I'm going to make it any bulkier than it already is while on the go. If I'm going to add anything I suggest you add a RAVpower usb-c type battery pack to charge on the go. For me this use case only comes up when I'm travelling. Only on long trips is it that I need the added battery and the the independence of my own power source while mobile. Due to the travel pattern I have the laptop bag as my personal item is a constant, so I can very easily add the RAV without much additional consideration. Now with the RAV along for the trip I have the ability to charge any device I may have with me, my; iphone, tablet, laptop, apple watch, wireless headphones and earbuds, Bluetooth speakers etc..

Unless I was going to change my travel pattern and start taking more frequent small trips of 2-3 days, where I would attempt to only take my phone( and battery case) without any "personal item" luggage. This is use case that comes to my mind when I try to think of when I see this battery case product working for a phone such as the iphone pro max. I just don't see that happening anytime soon for me.

For day-to-day usage for most people, I would agree.
For trips abroad (for me personally) or for long flights (for many people) or for any profession that requires extended travel, this would be terrific.
Long flights generally have charging ports or power outlets.

Apple Store happened to have the 11 Pro Max battery cases in stock today so I got one. I wonder how that camera button works?

Long flights generally have charging ports or power outlets.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes it’s easier to just use your phone in a battery case than to separately carry a cord and charging adapter (don’t plug your phone into random usb ports. Just don’t). Sometimes the airport has lots of places to charge while you wait. Sometimes it doesn’t. Etc.

These cases are convenient, the phone still fits in the back pocket of my Levi’s, even in the case, and they provide great peace of mind when you aren’t sure you’ll be near a power outlet much in the next 18-24 hours.

The case is a lot less unwieldy than a separate battery back and charging cord.

You’re obviously not the target demographic for this product, and the ‘ugly’ comment is overly exhausted, no one cares that’s it’s ugly, they purchase a battery extender for the utility to provide the additional battery life necessary.
