Trucks outside Google HQ waiting to deliver more Bezel:

iu

The bezels ARE thick, and I would guess they’ll get thinner over time. Like with the first Apple Watch, the UI was initially designed to show glowing elements on a black background so that you don’t NOTICE it as much, but, yeah, it’s a thick bezel.

Or just design it without bezel in the first place. Never understood the purpose of such an ugly design concept.

It’s less expensive because the control circuitry can just sit on the edge of the screen, probably. It’s not so much a concept as a requirement for the tech. If this version does well, they may spring for a more expensive process next time.

I actually like the design. They pretty much imagined what a round Apple Watch would look like.
The bezel seems to be thick but I think it's because of the glass dome going all the way to the sides. If it had aluminum/steel on the edges it would't look like that. But they are doing what Apple did pre series 4, using the oled black to fade them nicely.

I guess they’d rather stumble out of the gate than do it right the first time in order to save a few bucks.

Honestly, one of the worst releases Google has had in years.
Have to disagree on that. The Pixel 6's were their best selling Pixels ever and the 7's refine that and fix some issues (new 5G modem as an example as the 6 had an early gen 5G modem and it showed). It's their 2nd version of their custom chip so all those things they wanted but couldn't make it in Gen 1 are mostly there. They finally have a watch that will work for them and for the folks over there. And a tablet is coming. A family of stuff over in Pixel-ville.

For the people buying Android and not wanting Samsung, it looks like a good year for them at Google here. JMHO of course.

That $600 price point for the regular Pixel 7 is just killer.
I was really surprised they did that with everything going on in the markets. That will get them some sales over in Android world - good move if they can afford it.

Well, yes, Apple did the same thing with the first Apple Watch. Once it caught on, then they had a few years to work on how to decrease the size of the bezels and when they had a solution they released it. Then, improved on that a few years later.

It’s just how iterative product development is done.

To be fair I think Google is edging Apple on the phone hardware front. The rear design, especially the cameras, is just nicer than the iPhone Pro’s swollen camera bumps. No wobble when placed on a table, the matt aluminium looks great, is lightweight and the subtle curves make such a difference in the hand.

The watch on the other hand is clearly generations behind where Apple is.

Man, tough crowd over here. The bezel is big, but not that noticeable with that oled screen. Google knows that, that's why pretty much all the UI is black.

I'm curious to see how it'll do, especially after Fitbit ruined their new Sense 2 and Versa 4.
It’s probably slightly more noticeable than Apple’s was just because Apple’s visible screen took up more space at 1.54 inches across while Google’s is 1.22 inches.
