I think you underestimate grossly how many people have multiple Apple products, and you citing an example of someone you know who willynilly bought a Pixel 6a is anecdotal.

And let’s be honest, Android out sells Apple in Europe and Asia almost entirely due to the amount of cheap Android phones are available. Period. Apple is expensive everywhere.
I already quoted price as one of many reasons why people ignore Apple outside of the USA. Once again, most people don't care enough about their phone or the manufacturers 'eco-system' enough for that premium price each year. They want messaging and photos and will go where that's delivered best for the money they wish to spend.

These are people who treat their phones as tools, not as lifestyle objects. Big difference in mindset.

iPhone's and their premium price is simply not worth it when you get better from cheap Android.

Hence why they are outsold 2 to 1.

Once Apple are forced to adopt RCS messaging, like they are USB-C I imagine it will start to change in USA too...

Anti-competitive behaviour isn't the way forwards IMHO.

What Android phone has better messaging? And what cheaper Android phone has objectively as-good or “better” photos? Where price isn’t a factor, ecosystems do matter and Apple wins here.

WhatsApp is better than iMessage and Pixel series has better camera's with better features. And all for less money.

Granted, these have far worse eco-systems; but clearly not a factor for the rest of the world as 70% of the population use Android and iOS is 27%

The Google stuff looks really good. The 7 Pro will probably have the best camera out there and for sure beat the Apple's 14 Pro in terms of features (actual optical zoom...)

The watch looks very nice but personally I don't care about these devices in need of daily charging, having a Garmin.

The tablet and its magnetic base with speakers is also cool. Google really stepped up this year, not sure why, it's not like they make money selling this stuff.

The Pixels do not have objectively better cameras, they have areas where they are better and others where they’re worse. And the rest of the world who are buying Android are absolutely not buying Pixels. People who don’t care about ecosystems buy Android solely because of price alone. Not because they have better features. WhatsApp is also not objectively better than messages, particularly with new changes in iOS 16.

I do think the cameras on the 7/7 Pro look awesome, and the tablet with the speaker base is really awesome. I’d instantly buy a magnetic speaker base for my iPad were Apple to make one.

How on earth can you speak for a few billion people? Are you that arrogant to assume you know their motivations behind the personal purchases of a few billion people?

Don't have better features? That's absurd. Everyone has their own reasons for using whatever they use; seldom is it price.

You have zero knowledge of anyone's purchasing motivations.

Honestly, this forum attracts the worst of the Apple bunch.

I recognize that this is only my opinion, and that I may even be in the minority. But to me, only one of these looks like the Watch Steve J would have designed, and sadly it's not the one on the left. And I say that as a lifelong Apple fan, and a constant Apple Watch user since Series 4. The square vs round face for me was the only thing wrong. I of course understand screen real estate etc etc. But the round watch still looks more elegant and, well, watch-like, to me.

Sigh. Would have loved to have seen Apple's own ideas for round designs. In my mind they looked a lot like this one.

Well it's better at some things for sure, like the ease of sending documents (which are later available per contact in a separate section). When you do business or actual work that's very helpful.

And of course it doesn't lock you to a particular platform. You can use it on Android, on iOS, it's got desktop clients for Windows and MacOS etc.

I can't believe I'm defending a product owned by Zuckerberg but WhatsApp was developed by smart guys and there's a good reason why it's the most popular messaging platform worldwide.

Plus, if you have data access it's completely free. My very first time using iMessage I got stung with international SMS costs which were utterly unexpected given that I and my interlocutor were both on WiFi, using iPhones.

To answer your question, no I’m not that arrogant, but just stating the obvious. Are you also arrogant enough to make the statement people choose Android because of better features for less money? What features are better on these cheap Androids? Customizable settings? What is it? And you contradict yourself when you literally said “price is one of the reasons people choose Android”. We know that people can get a camera and ability to message on an Android for very cheap all across Europe and Asia where Android sells better. It’s pricing as the main driver, and you know this.

Fair points that I was not aware of. 👍

$350?!!!! Any iPhone owner who buys this over an Apple Watch is an absolute fool! You can actually get an Apple Watch for cheaper than this that still has a bigger screen!

I genuinely expected this to come in right around $199, maybe $249, but that price for such middling performance is just silly unless you must have a Google branded watch for whatever weird reason.

Seeing as no iPhone user can use it as they need an android phone that’s a rather safe bet

A great feature for me that pushed me towards the Pixel was its speech recognition software, especially across multiple languages. If you live in a bi/trilingual household where not everyone speaks the same languages, having on-device translation/transcription is invaluable. Coincidentally, I live in Asia.

You speak of ecosystems quite a bit, but it seems like you're defining an ecosystem as laptop/phone/watch integration. For someone who has smart lights/monitors/fans/speakers in their house (as I do), HomeKit is brutally clunky. The Apple smart home functionality is utter balls. To me, that part of the Apple ecosystem is far inferior to Amazon's devices.

Stop assuming that people who buy Androids over here in poor, impoverished Asia only do so because they're plebs living hand-to-mouth.

Price is one of the reasons; you're claiming it's the only reason because, it seems, you think Apple is the be-all-and-aned-all of phone gods.

People buy Android for better features, better hardware, software, apps - multitudes of reasons. Now, you may not agree with some of those choices, but to each his own, right?

It isn't a cost issue for me. When I buy Pixels it's only because the camera is vastly better IMHO. Others because they travel and like the live translation features. My wife loves call screening and that's her reason.

Some just like the fact they are NOT in an eco-system. As much as you love it, others will feel the shackles of having to buy from 1 manufacturer all the time.

The world is vast, you should embrace the fact that everyone has different views on things and they are not all Apple.

You'r basically acting like a toddler saying "apple is the best, you only buy android if you can't afford it"

I’ve used Android. It’s been a while, and there are great features. The Pixel cameras have been incredibly good since the start. Now that they are doing more in the way of branding their whole lineup of products, it’s probably the best ecosystem next to Apple. Problem is, it’s Google, and I don’t want to be that locked in to Google. Google and Samsung both have great ecosystems and products, but it’s not for me. I prefer iOS and macOS. And Apple has rejuvenated my enthusiasm with the Watch Ultra. It’s my favorite Apple product I own at the momen
"ecosystems" suck and are a byproduct of lazy.

You can look up every news report about the Apple Watch, nobody complained about the bezels as much as now. That's a fact.
That’s a factor of the current market participants. The Apple Watch now doesn’t have a huge bezel, so the product Google just released is getting compared to the Apple Watch and, concerning bezels, they’re actually physically bigger.

And, playing with some measurements I found, it appears that the 5mm all around bezel MAY actually be bigger than the first Apple Watch’s bezel. If anyone finds measurements for the Apple Watch from edge of image to edge of screen, post back here. I was just able to find edge of image to edge of watch, which for the Apple watch includes the metal part where one wouldn’t expect the screen.

Back on topic - here is an example of the 7pro's super res zoom. I think this will be a game-changer.

Pricing is very competitive, I can trade in my iPhone 11pro for £350 (Apple offer only £285 against the 14pro). Plus they are giving earbuds free (worth £340) and another discount of £25 off on top of that if you are a google one member.

Net cost is silly cheap.

Design of the watch? Meh. But Google world will like it. In Russia, many are happy with the place and believe other places are bad or evil. So that’s an inertia driven style choice like a pixel watch is. But my question is - Google built in VPN? What could go wrong? Who will jbe monitoring the states of the Vs and Ps? Disclosure: my watch is a generic digi (square style) $42 4 years old, crack on screen but no leakage swimming or functionality loss. Battery good for 3-4 weeks at least. Honestly have never run it down totally. Heart rate. Bluetooth pairs with iPhone health app. Miles for bike, run, etc. My stylish leather strap cost more than the device.
