You're right of course. Maybe I didn't make myself clear. My point is that the current form factor of the iPhone 5/5s is not ideal. I've heard many people wishing for a WIDER iPhone 5s, while I haven't heard that many people wishing for a TALLER phone. The main problem from a readability perspective with the current form factor is the width. That was my point. I think Apple chose that form factor in order to allow for one-handed operation, not because of how it would be to actually look at and read on the screen. And it seems like Apple is not giving up on "one handed operation", even though it will probably be difficult anyway with this larger phone. So they sacrifice the actual usability of the screen, imo.

So all you really mean is that you would rather they go back to the 3:2 aspect ratio of the iPhones before the 5. Get it. Even though it isn't going to happen, I can't say I disagree with you.

3:2 is a good compromise ratio, and I don't get how 16:9 became the industry standard for smartphones or anything other than purpose built TV/Movie screens. It really is a negative for productivity. 4:3 works very well for the iPads, and 16:10 is very good for the Laptop screens. I think 3:2 is a ratio that could have worked extremely well for all iDevices AND Apple's laptops.

Would have allowed them to have the same ratio on everything, and is a good balance between video watching and productivity/web browsing/reading.

Can't wait. If they actually do release a 5.5" version, I'll get that otherwise I have no problem with the 4.7".

I eventually realised that the 3:2 aspect of my iPhone 4 is EXACTLY what I'd like to have in a 4" or 4.7" screen phone. I had hopes of the 6 being wider but not taller than the 5/5s only that won't happen either. I guess I'll keep procrastinating until the 4 dies!

I agree. 3:2 is better for a device typically used in portrait orientation, and wider is more important than taller for a better reading experience. I can't figure out why the smartphone market went 16:9 and never looked back. I guess people watch a lot more video on their phones than I do...

 In 2007, 3.5" was considered huge.

Fair enough but iPhone 4 could have had larger display already...
Also in 2007 phones were mostly about phoning, today they are about pretty much everything else except phoning. And needs additional features / usage require real estate...

Maybe in the mobile equivalent of a third world country that was the US, but over here we had had cameras, browsers, apps, videochat and whatnot pretty much since the turn of the century.

I remember rocking the sweet 66 MHz ARM-powered Nokia 9210 back in 2000 or 2001, browsing the web, developing apps for it and laughing at the people stateside who couldn't decide on whether to call or text someone with their flip phones... :)

No, but really. I agree with your assertion that a large screen makes sense for 99% of what people do with their smartphones today. I'm eagerly waiting for foldable phones that would allow for a proper tablet sized screen in a pocketable form factor.

Put it on the back, the side, or integrate it into the screen, or do iris or face recognition, or...

Putting it anywhere but in the home button won't work. The side is to thin and the back is a stupid place HTC already proved that.

It won't be getting integrating into the screen any time soon. Face/Iris recognition depend on the camera so if you turn the lights off it won't work.

The home button is here to stay.

YES! Every 2 years we get an additional row of icon! :p

Why does it seem like these physical mockups are always only 4.7". I'm very interested in what the 5.5" version would look like, both in size and screen appearance (more icons??).

ps. with all this added screen size, it really is getting to be about time to do MORE with the homescreen than just a static grid of icons...

I can see this 5.5" model being a thing of myth just like the tear drop design and iWatch. 4.7" eliminates the "iPhone is too small" complaints without blurring the lines of what is an iPhone and what is an iPad. Android users loved the 4.7" HTC One and Nexus last year and many view 4.7" as the sweet spot between screen size and comfort/usability for a smartphone.

As for the static grid of icons on the home screen...what exactly do you do with a Mac's home screen? It's essentially just a picture with a static grid of app icons in the dock. Same thing. Widgets would get boring fast and would just cause many to complain about battery life.

I want a 4 inch iPhone 6 screen :(we shouldn't be forced in order to get the next iPhone...to have a huge screen.

No one's forcing you to do anything fella..

----------

What about those who are forced to use tiny screens since 2007?

Once again, no one is forcing anything.. you are choosing to buy your mobile of choice.. if you didn't like it then why buy it?..

I agree! I hope this larger size is just an option/alternative and they maintain the current phone size.
For those of us who still use the iPhone as a "phone": that fits in your pocket and doesn't look ridiculous when holding it to your ear and making a call.

And for when I want a larger screen, that's what I have my iPad mini & iPad Air for!

Comments like this are so silly. It's the same that was said about the move to a 4" phone instead of a 3.5; "OMG 4" will never fit in my pocket, anything bigger is just ridiculous and looks like a brick". Then the 4" came out and guess what? Everyones perception of too large was changed (well at least everyone with Apple vision; the rest of the industry already turned this corner). People bought the 5 and subsequent 5S in droves and guess what else? The ones who keep their phone in their pocket do so just fine and *GASP* were able to make phone calls and looked completely normal.

I don't know about you but I work in a corporate environment where slacks and especially slim fit slacks are worn. I'm one of the few minority who actually have iPhones, the rest have Android phones with screens ranging from 4.3" to 5" and guess what? They can put their phone in their pocket just fine. You'd be hard pressed to tell if they have a 4" iPhone 5 in their pocket or a 4.7" Nexus 4 or Moto X.

How could this be? Well unless you wear a wetsuit that is absolutely skin tight, then phones of differing sizes can fit in your pocket. Additionally unless your talking about a 5.5"+ phone like the Galaxy note then they look just find holding to your head on a phone call. You're just conditioned to think that it won't fit in your pocket and it looks ridiculous and it won't be possible to use with one hand because Apple saw that in their own words "Customers want what we don't have". So they built a marketing campaign and PR spin machine around issues with larger screens that really didn't exist except for a very very VERY small select few (people who do really wear skin tight clothing and have small hands for a human). They made everyone think that these issues affected the majority when in reality it only affected the very small minority.

Once this phone comes out, people who complained will buy it, love it, put it in their pockets, and not think twice. That simple.

Ever hear of Touch ID?

Its this thing in that "outdated" home button.

The home button is not going away. There has to be a place for Touch ID.

Is there any reason the touch ID panel couldn't be put on the back of the phone and activated by an index or middle finger instead of the thumb? Cases could have a cutout for the sensor. Think how it would reduce the overall size of the phone…

Shouldn't we think outside the single-surface box?

Would you mind posting the .stl file from your print so we can play at home?

We're making some tweaks based on our experience with this test, but yes, once we have a model we like the plan is to make the file available.

Please put the mockup in the case!

Don't know whether this was posted by someone else.

I believe this story's entire purpose in life was for someone to justify the purchase of a 3D printer.... just saying...

:D

If i had that many updates i would've killed myself. Anyhow. Im really not feeling the new iphone 6 design. It seems like the top and buttom should be narrower (by the camera and home button). It looks longer rather than wider

Can you show a picture from the side just so we get an idea of how thin the mockup is? From the front it looks like it's a bit fatter than the case itself... Leads me to believe that the real thing will be either thinner than the mockup or fatter than the leaked cases.

Scrolling past the click for larger links on those photos I kept wishing there was a click for smaller option. :p

Apple making a big dumb largephone is just as ridiculous as Samsung doing it.

larger iPhone screen

Anyone who can't hold a mere 4.7 inch iPhone in their hands has "pansy hands". Get real. Get a life.

With all due respect that is your opinion. Yes a bigger phone will fit in my pocket however it is, to me and some others at least, noticeable.

As some have said it would be nice if Apple had different screen sizes available with the latest hardware. That way we're all happy.
