I find myself wishing my iPhone's screen was just a little larger these days, so a bump up to 4.7 is welcome. I doubt they'll settle on the protruding camera though, it seems like the iPods had that feature as something of a dry run to see how people reacted. Besides, if wearables end up going where I think they're going, our phones will get relegated to our bags for the majority of the day anyway.

I really do think the optimum screen size system is metric paper :

iPhone - A6
iPad Mini - A5
iPad - A4
MacBook Pro A4
iPad Desk / iMac - A3
Display - A2

Built on golden ratio and precisely scalable.

Interesting thought. It's not golden ratio though - iirc golden ratio is 1:1.1618, not too far off a 16:10 screen.

----------

3:2 is a good compromise ratio, and I don't get how 16:9 became the industry standard for smartphones or anything other than purpose built TV/Movie screens. It really is a negative for productivity. 4:3 works very well for the iPads, and 16:10 is very good for the Laptop screens. I think 3:2 is a ratio that could have worked extremely well for all iDevices AND Apple's laptops.

Would have allowed them to have the same ratio on everything, and is a good balance between video watching and productivity/web browsing/reading.

And it's the same as 35mm film.

I like my 15" mbp ratio though, although I would say widescreen doesn't work so well for smaller notebooks.

While I have no qualms about letting people who want giant two handed screens have their desires, I certainly hope the 4" screen is still an option. The 5S is plenty big in my hand, and making it wider and taller is moving it out of the realm of one handed use. And as thats been a point of pride for Apple, one would hope they don't just abandon it all together because some people complain. They have sold a hundred million iPhones with their teeny tiny screens, so clearly someone likes them.

As someone with a Note II, I can use it mostly (sometimes a little awkward) one handed so I am glad Apple is finally releasing something a little bigger. While yes, Apple has sold a ton of iPhones with tiny screens, that doesn't necessarily mean people liked the size of the screen in particular as that was the only size that Apple sold. Also, Apple's own research indicates that they will only continue to grow in the phone market if they release a bigger screen size. But maybe they'll keep the small size, who knows? I for one, with my larger hands and decreased dexterity, welcome our larger screened Apple overlords :):apple:

The ratio of metric paper is not the golden ratio. The ratio is sqrt(2) while the golden ratio is (1+sqrt(5))/2

Yes! Quite right - I always make that mistake. Thanks!

Yes, I stand corrected on the aspect ratio. It's like trying to hum the Christopher Reeves Superman theme tune... I always end up doing Star Wars, and vice-versa.

You still talk on the phone? What is this, the 80s?

The reason phones got small was because making phone calls was pretty much all they did. Smaller was better.

These devices aren't really phones anymore; they're pocket computers that have a voice calling app.

You said that you still occasionally do voice calling, for which occasions too big smartphones are really ugly.

More importantly, as you said, you put them into pockets. Having a smartphone in the pocket that is big enough to be easily identifiable is uglier!!!

I just realized, that my ATT contract won't be up in time to get the iPhone 6...

iPad 2 was already dropped when they re-introduced the iPad 4.

FYI I was referring to iOS 8 potentially dropping support for iPad 2. I realized they quit selling it a short time ago and "dropped" it from the sales line up.

I really hope that 4,7" is not the smallest available phone from Apple...
I don't care about the best and biggest graphics, the longest battery life or the fastest processor.
I want a phone that I can actually use with one hand !

The 5S and 5C will still be available for you for some time, enjoy :)

uh huh

I do notice all the Android people playing that same lame game.

oh really? all "the ......... people"? sounds a bit elitist there much?

anyways, free wifi is everywhere and the perfect iPad Air is capable of making great phone calls on free calling apps. i save wads of cash every month by not having a phone and get all i need done with ease.

i'm just one of "those people" who do not rely on expensive ways to communicate and who still think free everything is great especially the internet and communications between "all people".

yeah

i love you all.

Why should I care if you think that something is ugly?

And why should you? The quest for better self esteem should not start at an electronics store.

Electronics or apparels, beautifulness is always an important factor of a merchandise’s value. Oh, of course, there are people have not even the minimal sense of beautifulness, but they are the extremely minority in the world. You cannot put too much attention to the extreme minorities when you make business consideration.

What business consideration considering which minorities? The hundreds of millions of people buying 5+ inch smartphones? Doesn't sound like a minority to me, but it sure does sound like a very lucrative business to be a part of.
