My main ATV4k Siri Remote trackpad is starting to wonk out and I can’t get the “edge press skip forward” thing to work reliably anymore.

I’m not sure what I’ll do if it keeps getting worse. For what I actually do with an ATV, I might just go get two Roku’s honestly.

I watch YTTV and a couple other sports Apps and use Plex & Spotify. The ATV’s are INSANE overkill for what I’m doing with them and I hate the Siri remote with the heat of a thousand suns...

(to answer the “why do I have them” - I’d thought gaming on them might be more of a thing and AirPlay has been occasionally used...)

Roku 4Ks don't support frame-rate matching which to me is kind of a big deal.

Yeah great, its bigger, which is something I want from Apple TV remote, and it has direction pad which works better than the trackpad (for the most part).

But it is literally missing every core part of the Siri Remote: Rechargeable via Lightning, Bluetooth connection, Siri, TV button, etc.

no swiping means it's awful for entering text
Even the swiping is awful for entering text.

Just iOS Remote app/widget, or dictation.

BTW the best remote for an Apple TV is an iPhone. Keyboard input, large swipe area, and you're not likely to lose it anytime soon.

Now all I need is 5 iPhones so I can put one in each room we have a TV. Or maybe super-glue my iPhone to my arm. ;)

There are many perfectly legitimate complaints in this thread.

For crying out loud, I've owned 7 Macs, 5 iPhones, 5 iPads, an iPod, an Apple Watch, 4 Apple TVs, an Airport Extreme, and even APPL stock. So if my ATV remote doesn't work well, it's not because I'm "a hater" or I don't know how to work technology.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of ATV owners. How self-centered do you have to be to think your good experience is the only possible experience, and thus any deviation must be a fault of the operator.

The current Apple remote is FAR better than the original. Both way to small and always getting lost. I agree it needs better functionality. I can control my TV's volume but don't have the ability to turn the TV on and off. Is that possible?

I love the Siri remote. Don’t quite understand the hate. Other than how small it is. I solved that by attaching a Tile Mate to the underside of it with a 3M command strip. Makes it easy to hold and orient and also makes it easy to find if it’s ever misplaced.
There is an inherent design flaw when "I simply had to [ Duct Tape / Velcro / Command Strip ] a [ Banana / Live Iguana / Second Device ] to it in order to make it [ Easy To Hold / Harder To Misplace / Less Likely To Choke Small Children ] ." is offered as a defense of the device.

I assume you mean the 16” MBP that Ive design last year or the year before.

Yeah, the 16". And Ive probably had little to do with it - the rumor mill has been saying he's been more or less checked out from Apple for the past two or three years. John Gruber even alluded to it several times in his post about Ive's departure. Although he pins it even further back, pointing to a 2015 article stating that Ive had "moved beyond" computers.

In any case, time will tell. I just want the next 13" to have the newer keyboard... my 2015 MBP is fine, but obviously won't last forever.

If you have HDMI-CEC enabled in all devices and not blocked throughout your entire device chain, then your TV should turn off automatically if you manually sleep the ATV by holding the Home button for several seconds.

Unfortunately HDMI-CEC is an interoperability nightmare, so there are no guarantees.

As soon as my 2017 Samsung TV identifies the device as a apple tv, my Samsung remote starts working automatically with it.
Got myself a new Samsung and was actually surprised that the remote was able to drive the Apple TV when selecting the proper HDMI input. I’m actually wondering if the commands are sent to the TV which transmits them to the AppleTV through the HDMI connection. Anybody knows if that’s possible or even feasible?

Totally agree. Just like the clip on thingies that were made for the puck mouse. Obviously points to a serious design issue. I actually only added the Tile Mate as a lost item finder for when it’s misplaced (I have tiles on LOTS of things!). The benefits of making it easier to hold / orient was just a happy accident / added bonus. Obviously if so many people hate it then there are issues. I’m not discounting those experience or saying people are wrong. I just have a different experience. I like it and have never had any issues with it. But that may be largely due to my tile that’s stuck on it. I actually used it for a month once without the tile (when my non-replaceable battery one died and it took me a while to buy replacements) and the orientation issue and slimness WAS very annoying. I suspect the biggest problem with the remote is more the ergonomics / form factor than the UI.

I use the iPhone remote app but it could use improvement as well. I think the touch pad area needs to be smaller so the the controls on the bottom of the screen could be moved up. The play/pause, TV home and Siri buttons are two close to the bottom of the screen. I like to swipe between this app and the app that controls my AV receiver so i find my fingers hitting the TV button frequently. Also it needs dedicated FF and RW buttons.Trying to FF the same was the physical remote does is too frustrating, for me anyway.

The Griffin Survivor was like the cases for the Wii controllers. I've got this one on one remote. It's good. I've got 5 ATV's, and as many cases. *shrug*
Or rather than just a case, I bought one of these a few years back. (it was like $20 on sale)

It helps with: Ergonomics, orientation, protection, slipping-down-the-sofa-cushions, and has a few buttons you can program for your TV. Can’t remember the last time I used the regular (big) TV remote.
