IMO foldable phones are a gimmick, but I do appreciate Samsung pushing Apple to ACTUALLY innovate.
We actually don't know if apple was looking at foldable phones, say in 2008. As we know we don't always know what Apple is up to. For example the 64 bit chip in the 5s was a surprise to many.

LMAO Apple develops their own OS’s. The M1 just set the bar extremely high for computer processors. The Apple Watch is the most popular and most successful Smart Watch. The AirPods are revolutionary. Samsung follows Apple’s lead so much it’s laughable. Apple removes the headphone jack then Samsung throws shade in ads then does the same thing the following year. Apple removes the power adapters in their phones then Samsung throws shade at Apple for it then the following year they copy Apple. Notice everything Samsung does when copying Apple is in the FOLLOWING year. That’s how Samsung follows Apple. Lol. Apple has been innovating a lot. Funny how when Samsung comes out with a gimmick the Samsung people pretend like Apple needs to be pushed to innovate. 😂

Pretty obvious the Samsung people are taking the criticism of this product personally by hurling an insult back at Apple’s products in defense. That’s really silly. Samsung does not need a team of defenders. The criticism isn’t about members here so for people to get personally upset just because others here don’t like this useless product seems just strange.

I agree that hands-on yourself is the only way to evaluate a product for yourself but Apple fans are tired of companies like Samsung racing to market with half-baked products. We know for a fact that folding phones will get much better over next few years than they are right now. Apple has enough sense to sit out this round until the technology is up to the standards of their customers. The real innovation is in knowing what gives customers the best experience, even if that means not getting there first.
I understand where you are coming from with Apple's tendency to work internally and only reveal a fully formed product, but it is interesting to see Samsung take a different approach. They seem to be releasing iterations and getting user feedback and field experience while incrementally improving the product. It looks like they are getting some valuable experience building this new tech. So far the market for this is all early adopters so I wouldn't worry too much about issues in customer experience. From the reviews I've seen, that experience is rapidly improving. If Apple goes in this direction and if they do all of their development behind closed doors, I hope that they are able to get all of the details right and the production process worked out in one go. They usually do so, hopefully they will this time, too.

It's going to be interesting watching this develop.

What a complete backwards way to sell a newish product. You don't sell it for a price that hardly anyone wants. $600 MAYBE but a bit less than that. $1800? 😂
The price makes sense. Samsung is not selling this as a high volume, mainstream phone. This is a small volume, experimental product aimed at early adopters. Besides being expensive to build, the high price keeps the market small while they work out the kinks.

What did surprise me, my other half fell in love with the Z Flip. Now she can’t make her mind up on what color to get.
They'll love it. It really does work pretty well.

The only shortcoming that's glaringingly obvious is battery life. If they are heavy user or gamer, that might be a problem. It's supposed to last all day given normal use, but I haven't had it that long to see. The screen really is nice, even with the crease, it's better color than my iPhone 11 Pro Max. I have a bit of a problem typing on the keyboard, but that's just because I'm not used to it at all. It can use my Motorolla razr fast charger fwiw...

I have the Fold 3, and had the Fold 2 before it. For my needs, it's just an awesome device. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Sammy offers great trade in values and pre-order bonuses for those who do. The Fold/Flip certainly aren't for everyone. It is however clear those comments from people who have never used the devices. Whether it's foldable, rollable or something else I believe the future of phones will evolve beyond the candy bar.

Yes, but some people still can't shut up about their perceived offense by the notch so I assume they will continue to bore us with whining about "the crease" ad nauseam.
I only hated the notch when viewing videos or when having to click the close "X" on advertisements in games.

The Flip 3 has a hole punch camera, it's much less noticeable, but I'll have to send back whether it gets in the way of close buttons, haven't hit one yet.

Biggest flop is how narrow it is in „phone“ mode, what a weird aspect ratio oh and that it costs more than an iPhone and an iPad combined
Not really. A 512GB iPhone and a 512GB iPad would cost more. And you can't put an iPad Mini in your pocket. Not to mention that an iPad Mini doesn't have a 512GB version - yet. We will see next month.

But you are right about the narrow part. When folded, its a bit too narrow for anything other than basic stuff. Its usuable, closer to an iPhone Mini maybe. But if you are used to a big screen phone like the Max, it will be cramped.

Apple's usual plan is letting other innovate and test the market first, in this case Samsung, and if it's successful and there's money to be made, then they will jump on the bandwagon.
Apple's process is usually to explore and develop concepts behind closed doors until they have something that they are satisfied with. Samsung, in this case, is doing much of their refinement in the open. It is interesting to watch it happen.

Totally agree. I enjoy all the different approaches and resulting competition. I realize that folding screens have gotten much better and will continue to improve but I am still stuck with the image and stories about the first folding screens 2 years ago. It will take a few more years or seeing friends with folding screen tech before I would even consider giving it a chance. However, if Apple released a folding screen phone tomorrow, I would probably buy it without even trying it out. That's what cultivating customer experiences, controlling the narrative and design/production secrecy for decades gets you. No other company can claim such influence over so many customers because no other company has earned it like Apple.

Why? they're a gimmick. They offer NO true utility. None. Even if it were done "right". They are not the future of anything, except spam articles about flop products.

Edit: You can "disagree" and "angry face" all you want. These are facts. Way too many people who follow this trend that want to see materialize simply because you have a dopamine deficiency and want to see something new and different available.

How is a future prediction of yours a "fact?" Are you a time traveler? Who will win the 2022 Super Bowl? I wanna make some money.

A lot of people predicted the iPad was a gimmick that will fail too. "Just a big iPhone" they said.

Apple is just waiting for Samsung to perfect the screen so it will no longer have a visible crease when unfolded. Then Apple will order millions of these screens for their own foldable. Samsung is basically testing the hardware for Apple. I am guessing the iPhone 18 will be a foldable.

Facts? No, they are not facts, they are just your opinions and people are free to disagree with such biased opinions.

There will be a crease or separation of some kind for he forseeable future. Just physics. "Memory" glass doesn't exist yet.

Yeah but somebody has to actually improve the technology in order for foldables to get much better while Apple just sits around and waits so there's no reason to be angry at Samsung.

The real innovation is in knowing what gives customers the best experience, even if that means not getting there first.

So the real innovation is just waiting to be very last because you have no vision or ability to improve a technology or a concept. Got it.
We will be waiting to hear in a few years how Apple "invented foldable phones".

She's coming from an S8 bought at launch....

I got a Fold 3 as a second phone (I always get an Android to play with, as iPhone is my primary - I just like iOS a little better). And I discovered that you can't appreciate the Fold until you see one in person. It is an impressive piece fo engineering. And the crease is not even noticeable in every day use. Its really more of a psychological issue, more than a physical one. Just like how we all got used to the notch. Even when running your finger across it, it feels pretty smooth. It will make a nice, pocketable Kindle reader.

Perhaps a more likely route to a creaseless screen would be through more scratch resistant materials, so that an outward facing fold, or an unrolling phone, was more viable.

I think Apple is letting Samsung Electronics work out the bugs on folding displays so by 2023, when the technology is better, Apple can finally offer a folding iPhone of its own design.

lol I don’t see this ever taking off.

An $1800 Nintendo 3DS for an “extra” 1.4 in. display
They already started to get close to Samsung's mainstream flagships in terms of sales. So I can say right now that you are wrong.

I got one. Love it so far. Also have no doubt that if Apple did make one they would make it more polished. But it is a fantastic device thus far. I couldn't imagine going back to my 11 Pro Max.
If they would make now one I don't see how it could be more polished than the Fold 3. But maybe in 2 years from now they could launch a more polished foldable than the Fold 3 the only difference is Samsung will be at their 5th generation by then.

Funny how Samsung fanboys are doing the same thing here saying if Apple made this foldable nonsense the Apple crowd would buy it. They know nothing about someone’s future let alone what someone would buy. Sounds like they’re salty about the enormous criticism and are being defensive.
