For what it is worth, it is not "going backwards" to introduce folding smart phones and tablets. It is an addressing of more consumer needs. Dumb and feature phones were not flipping and getting smaller for no reason. Smaller, flipping phones are more pocketable. Smartphones didn't get larger for no reason either. There is real value in having more screen space. A folding smartphone addresses both of these competing priorities. The Flip 3 has all the screen space of a flagship candy bar smartphone, with the pocketability of a flip phone. More screen. Smaller phone. That's moving forward.

Beautiful, beautiful piece of tech. Those saying foldable phones are trash, you wont buy them etc - wait until you see Apple release one and talk again
I think a folding would get old quick, I mean what problem were they actually trying to solve here?

Why? they're a gimmick. They offer NO true utility. None. Even if it were done "right". They are not the future of anything, except spam articles about flop products.

Edit: You can "disagree" and "angry face" all you want. These are facts. Way too many people who follow this trend that want to see materialize simply because you have a dopamine deficiency and want to see something new and different available.
How can they be facts when they are just your opinion. Get a grip and maybe go try these devices, tech is not all about Apple Or in fact it’s real lack of innovation. The iPhone 13 is kinda pathetic if the rumours are true. It’s just another tiny incremental update with a slightly thinner notch but it’s a bit deeper, and maybe it might recognise you in a mask but it might not we don’t know but at the end of the day if I had a phone that could fold out into a tablet back into a phone I would be very impressed. So I’m going to go to a shop and try one and not just hate on it because it’s Samsung. If it was an Apple product I get the feeling quite a few people here would be defending it rather than slamming it. And they would be saying oh the crease you hardly notice it, just like we do with the notch which to be honest I don’t notice and I imagine it’s exactly the same with this gadget the crease probably just disappears as you use it.

This site is so predictable sometimes and especially around this time of year when the latest and greatest iPhone which to be honest you can hardly tell the difference between from years model so far. People keep going on about 120 MHz screen I scroll fast enough on my iPhone 12 Pro I don’t need that on a screen that small, to be honest. Yes it’s got an even faster processor but nobody needs that in a phone now because the apps really don’t use that much grunt anyway. Give me something new something that’s got some genuine innovation. At least Samsung are trying, rather than just making the notch slightly slimmer And adding a few camera features that really are not worth the huge amount of money. Phones have got boring iPhones for me are now very boring little spies, and yes I know all about android and Google but Apple haven’t done anything genuinely different for years they keep it safe make their money don’t risk profit with something that might be new and different it’s all getting boring as hell. Apple are really just a services company now with some hardware tacked on, well that’s how I see it These days sadly.

Carrying size vs. screen real estate.
I mean, this is so self-evident, I can't believe anyone is questioning it. I can understand an individual not finding folding devices a good solution to their specific needs. I can understand an individual not thinking the product not being with the price for them, personally. But to not get how a pocketable tablet would be useful to some people? That's just inexplicable.

The issue is this is tech now, phones aren’t noticeably different year on year. The main features which can be improved are all camera related.

120hz
always on display
some big camera upgrades

is what the iPhone 13 will bring and new camera upgrades with maybe and even smaller notch next year as well.

foldable iPhone will be next but we know apple won’t release it until it’s full practical for the mass market. App optimisation is what their strengths are and why it may destroy the foldable market when it does arrive. Apple are never one to bring something out until they think it’s mature enough to not have issues.

samsung are great for pushing tech forward and this fold 3 does do that even though it has some clear shortcomings. However they are happy to release it to then keep working on it. Apple would rather not release it and work on it in development. That’s the difference.

I appreciate what Samsung has been doing and until this year have owned Android and iPhone at the same time. Nothing this past year on the Android side has been worth my time so far. The Flip 3 is the first one to catch my eye this year. If (when) I switch back it'll probably be for the Samsung Flip. This device piques my interest on many levels. And it is extremely functional while not feeling like a brick in my pocket like my 12 Pro Max. I think phones like the Flip are the (mainstream) future if we are comparing Fold vs. Flip styles. Not yet ready for prime time (looking at you as well, Razr) but we're getting close.

When Apple launches its first "Flip" it'll probably be an auto-buy for me.

I am still waiting on the scroll phone, a phone that rolls up into a scroll like a ancient manuscript. As this would be easier to conceal when you time travel back to ancient Egypt.

The Babylon 5 phones/tablets were like that, and yeah, that would be nice, it it will come, no doubt about it. It might be kind of hard to do structure-wise, but there's already a TV that can do that. (if you have LOTS of money!)

In the meantime, love my Samsung Flip 3. (just got it in yesterday)

STUPIDLY OVERPRICED! Half-baked gimmick city! Poor design because I can easily see the fold when fully open. All kinds of NO Sammy. Just all kinds of NO.
Yeah, I can't wait to get one too!

By the way, who's Sammy and why you do him like this? 😏
That's the only way I will ever own this nonsense of a product.
Okay then!
I’ve used it. It does not disappear. It’s an eye soar.
How high do your eyes soar?
Notch was better then a chin at the bottom.
Yeah, the notch doesn't need to be shaved like a chin does...
What a great way to set $1800 on fire.
I can show you a faster way, and we'll have hamburgers when it's all over with...do you have $1800 on you?
Off topic but, I don't know why it irritates me, but the use of the word "Anyways" always bothers me. 🤔
I know, right?

Anyways...
How many members of MACRumors is going to go try out an $1800 Samsung foldable phone that doesn't run iOS? Give me a %.
You under estimate us.

Anyways...

The Samsung people here are so defensive. Funny how they will defend Samsung against its deserved criticism and at the same time drop a trash comment towards Apple and its products. Not surprised by this behavior since this is an Apple-related site. This foldable nonsense is exactly that, nonsense, and it seems that Samsung is putting people out on the internet to praise it in order to overshadow the criticism. $1800 is way too much money for beta testers because this is not going appease the normal buying audience.

You four seem to also be Mac users. Question for you, as I'm contemplating giving this device a go. What services do you use for your calendars, email, contacts, etc? Are you "all google" and if so do you just use google stuff on your Mac? Or do you mix say google calendar on your phone with say Fantastical on the Mac?
This part is tricky as my wife uses icloud a lot.

I mainly use Google calendar, Google keep and Google contacts. That way everything syncs up nice.

I also use the outlook app and Microsoft email accounts so outlook is my go to mail client.

See, there's your problem. Because you love a company and feel the need to promote it, you assume everyone else must be doing the same. You are not making any headway because you are arguing with people who are concerned with technology, not corporate promotion. I'm interested in how devices can be used, and how that will change over time. Folding devices change the equation when it comes to screen size and portability. I've no loyalty to any corporation, and have no interest in the screaming of slogans. Anyone who spends their time declaring Samsung or Apple to be crap (for example) are simply people who are not interested in technology, and are not really engaged in the same conversation.

Not carrying two different devices. One that has a "large" screen, but is too small to actually do something useful on it except for making phone calls and the other a much larger screen but can't make phone calls. In Apple-land, that's a iPhone + iPad Mini.

Now, we've done home office the past 1 1/2 years and I'm not sure if we're ever going back to the old ways. But if we do, I can see a foldable device being a nice option for commuting and get some work done on the way.

Stopped by to check it out as the tech interests me. The price tag puts it out of reach at the moment. Plus I just b ought a new device recently. I will say I ws very impressed. Straight on you dont notice the crease at all. I did find the closed display a bit off center - hinge. If it was a bit cheaper it would be on my “might buy” list.

What did surprise me, my other half fell in love with the Z Flip. Now she can’t make her mind up on what color to get. 😂

Still not an answer or reason as to why it should exist.
Because tablets offer superior functionality to rectangular smartphones. The bigger screen allows for more of a computer-like experience than a limited strictly "mobile" smartphone.

However, tablets are impractical to carry with you everywhere you go. Smartphones on the other hand, fit in your pocket easily, thus offering superior usability. Foldable tablets like the Galaxy Fold combine the usability of a tablet (albeit on the smaller end of the size spectrum, which I can tall you from experience isn't a problem) with the pocketability of a smartphone, though it is thicker. But, it still fits in your pocket easily.

Therefore, you are able to use your tablet in places you would never normally have it. Like on a hike (to take pictures), or while traveling, etc. Tablet wherever you have your smartphone. And for what it's worth, the outside screen is immensely usable.

Did this really need explaining? Will it take Apple releasing one for you to agree on these merits?

IMO foldable phones are a gimmick, but I do appreciate Samsung pushing Apple to ACTUALLY innovate.
They are a gimmick now, but once the technology gets a little more polish, they could become more mainstream. I appreciate that Samsung is exploring this as an option and trying out some new things while developing their ability to build these.

These may or may not ever become the dominant phone form factor but it seems likely that they will become more common as Samsung works out the wrinkles and others start adopting this.

As a car analogy, if regular phones are sedans, foldables are more like SUVs. More features at a greater cost. Not everyone needs one, but some people are going to want them and I bet it's not a small number.

Quite an insulting post and condescending. You and several others here defending Samsung seem to think that an Apple logo needs to be on this product for “Apple Fans” to want it. All kinds of wrong. The Samsung Crease is a gimmick and the outrageous price is the worse part next to the left over crease. $600 or less is all beta testers should be paying. Just something to put out on the web but it’s really useless.

Like those crappy keyboards Apple shipped for years? And poor bluetooth in some of the models? One port for MacBook, 2 for the Air and Pro? That' kind of experience? Or iPad OS severely limited? Ok bruh.
Those were design choices that a small contingent of users didn't like or were defective. Every company makes mistakes but at least Apple isn't racing to make even more mistakes. But I'm glad you have that list on hand to criticize Apple without even understanding the discussion here.
