Yea, people will say that Apple will have one that's better, but Apple's version is not out, and could be 5 years away, if that.

I don’t think Apple will make one, or at least not soon. Honestly, it seems gimmicky. Maybe one day when the tech is so advanced and the phone is thin like cardboard.

I don’t see how folding is the future. At work or at home you don’t need small screen to be big. Someone not Simone, that’s crappy iOS correction.

I agree, as I did in my original post, that folding may not be the future. Folding seems to have more drawbacks in its current state of materials being used and in the design. At home or work you have a large screen either in laptop or desktop form, I'm talking about while you're out and about. While riding public transport or sitting in a cafe or park or just outside you may want to have a tablet sized screen. It would be convenient to simply expand your phone which people always seem to have on them to get the large screen.

Agreed. Looks like a real Frankenstein's monster. Too many compromises. As a phone, tiny display in a bulky package. As a tablet, expensive and bulky product with only a 7.3 inch display. All for $2K!

I understand the point is to have a tablet and phone in one package, but I would much rather own an iPhone 11 ($699) plus an iPad Air ($499) and save $800.

Absolutely. Any consumer would be better off that way. It still surprises me that after 6-7 years of development, this is what they felt was worth releasing. I know they are desperate, but I expected better.

$149 screen replacement cost for a screen that can be permanently damaged by your fingernail!!!

The durability is shocking, another rushed to market prototype.

wait a minute... at least Samsung is up front about what customers are getting. And the cost of the screen for what it is seems a bargain compared to what Apple charges for its iPhones X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. I believe all of which cost more than double the price Samsung charges for this screen replacement. Apple is trying to make a home run in terms of profits with every gouging thing they do!!!

Samsung, Google and Huawei are also causing Apple to innovate. However, Apple is like a dinosaur that takes years to respond. For example night photography. I agree that once Apple does it everyone seems to think Apple implemented it best. But as some people say they don’t even see the notch over two years later, IT’S ALL I SEE WHEN I LOOK AT THE FRONT OF MODERN IPHONES. Apple truly should have eliminated the notch, gone to a hole punch or embraced a forehead. Or at a minimum, allow people like me who are disgusted by it to hide the notch via a software control like all other notched phones do!!!

This thread is comical. Obviously, the specific execution of the technology in the Fold is wanting...small front screen, too fragile, expensive, etc. Samsung should've stayed at the drawing board for now.

BUT! You don't have to squint very hard to imagine just about all the issues - other than perhaps price - getting solved with time, ultimately delivering an extraordinarily cool phone.

If I could unfold my 11 Pro Max to find what amounts to an 8.5" iPad on the inside, I'd be pretty effing excited about that.

When flip phones were the thing, I’d sometimes slam the phone shut if I ended a call angrily. I can only imagine how quickly this will break in a similar circumstance if someone receives an angering text and slams it shut.

I think this is a cool product though in theory, I look forward to what may materialize in the next few years.

Sounds like some sort of hologram/projection or even better eye lens is a much better solution than to physically bend plastic display.

I have to give Samsung credit for producing something different and kind of cool, which I'll never buy btw, meanwhile Iphone design hasn't changed in three years.

Wait they added another camera, that's courage!

You could buy an iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPad mini and still spend less than this. I don’t know if the Fold is overpriced, but it’s hardly a bargain.

No, I do in fact have to squint quite hard to see how they will work out fundamental mechanical weaknesses. It’s gonna take a long time.

Bold move launching a prototype as product... Because that's what this is.

IMHO: Foldable phone only makes sense with the screen being on the outside when folding. That way the issue with the bend radius and support of of the screen in the bending area is easily bypassed.
The resulting problem of a sliding screen should be much easier to solve.

All these sad people bashing this thing...

Samsung is trying to invent something completely new, of course the first version will be meh, but it's a start. Give it 3-4 years and it'll be great.
So basically people will be forking out around $2000 each year for the next 3-4 years for the privilege of testing out prototypes.
Interesting!
So rather than Samsung pay people to test their devices, Samsung get people to pay them instead. Wow! Samsung are smart.

Whoever invented the term “price point” needs to get bent! Adding pointless words to a word that already describes exactly what you mean is just people trying to sound important

Wow. Compromised in every possible way for some useless gimmick (IMO).
  • Awkward (non-standard) screen size in every configuration.
  • Hardware failure points galore
  • Not a good phone form factor
  • Not a good tablet/phablet form factor
  • And that off-center notch tho, ugh
This is NOT pushing the envelope or innovating or evolving, it's just a bad idea poorly implemented. Move along. A "throw crap at the wall" move in true Samsung style.
My thoughts precisely. What a piece of useless crap.

The fact that you said Google, Huawei, and Samsung are forcing Apple to innovate clearly shows you have no clue about what you are talking about. Those companies above are known for copying and stealing IP yet you praise them like heroes? Everything Apple does is copied by these companies. You also don't understand what innovation is. You somehow believe that companies innovate every year when the fact is if a company innovates once in a lifetime they are lucky.

Go buy an Android phone and go hang out in their forums. We will see you back here in 2 years or less.

Screen tech really is amazing now. All the latest phones have super thin screens, and now we can even bend them.

It's the battery that's holding everything back. That needs a massive leap forward to make folding phones a mass consumer product.

for the early, early, early adopters that have money to burn.

I look at it as perhaps in the future, when better tech and materials come along and it can be priced comparable to iphones are now, maybe then.
