I'd never buy it, but glad we have someone keeping Apple on their toes. I know a lot of people who love their Samsung phone.

No. If they were still doing it then yes.
Lots of companies do things like that, say one thing and then change their mind.
Have you NEVER changed your mind, (that was a rhetorical question)?
Exactly how do we explain the iPad mini or larger phones or the Apple Pencil. Apple were once against all of those things and now those products exists. I recall the iPhone 5 advert declaring that the iPhone 5 was the perfect size.

Yea, I know these are really computers now, but cell phone prices are out of control.
Exactly, and now if Samsung does well, Apple will follow and soon a freaking cellphone will be $2-3-4...k

Wow, $1,400 starting price. I thought my iPhone was expensive. I hope Apple does not follow as I don't think the extra $300 worth of features sounds worthwhile.
This is what worries me. Everyone playing top this until we have $2-3-4k...cellphones. How long until people start freaking boycotting instead of complaining about price in one breath but giving $1400 at the same time.

No smartphone is worth $1400 imo. No matter how you define what a phone is, the answer is still no... and the definition doesn't need to change btw. Smartphone implies everything you listed. Everything you listed can be done, and done well, on devices that cost far less than even a thousand dollars. Whether you wan't iOS or Android there is no need to spend that type of money to get great cameras, navigation, music, and media player that fits in your pocket.
Exactly and no matter if you pay installments or trade, the phone is still $1400. Those things are just ways to blind people from the real price.

no laptop should be worth 4000$

no desktop should be worth 6000$

no wheels should cost 400$
Definitely agree on wheels and monitor stands. The big issue with desk/laptops compared to other products is even the lowest offerings are out of range for some. And crap I like bigger screens and the lowest Mac Laptop is like $2400! I got a decent PC one for what I do for a third!!!

Probably true. But what telephones are you talking about? Calling these devices $1400 telephones is like calling a car a $35,000 air conditioner.

And a teaching point about “worth.” Worth is what the market says it is. If people buy it, that’s what it’s worth. There is no intrinsic value.
Exactly. People need to stop crying about price the same time they are shelling out another $1400! No one is going to lower the price if you keep buying and increasing demand.

Honest question: why would I need 16 GB of RAM on any phone at this point in time?
Yes you barely even need it on a computer unless you are doing major gaming or CAD or VMs.

I tried Android for a year after 8 years with iOS, but went back to iPhone as its hard to change OS. However this phone looks very good, I like it.
Yea I never had too many issues with the hardware, but they would always drag their feet on updates. Even when we got S8+ shortly after launch, it still took forever for Oreo, and even security updates were slacking. Still said coming "soon" for Oreo when we came back to Apple.
[automerge]1583336737[/automerge]
I know I’m not going to spend that much on my next iPhone.
Yea I could take $1100, but it's getting insane. And the biggest problem isn't just the price, it's the speed they are increasing it. There was a time when the price barely even rose over years. First issue was installments. You can definitely see a correlation between installments and prices rising faster. But now installments are starting to be more than the plan costs! You get to $2400 for a cell and that's $100/mo!!

Not for unlocked versions of Samsung flagships which get minimum three years upgrades but not necessarily every month after one year. In carrier locked editions, it takes more efforts to rollout upgrades which is why more delays on the carrier locked ones. In the Android world Samsung UI (Software)always ahead of latest stock android versions. Knox security is top class nevertheless the pricing is getting insane...

Where are all the Samsung users that were saying $1200 for an iPhone is insane?
And the problem with the Samsungs is the BASE S20 is $1k! compared to the 11 for $700. The $1100 iPhone is the top tier.

I'm curious why every supported iPhone regardless of carrier status gets iOS updates on the same date?
EDIT: And where do I go to get an unlocked Samsung? Is there a Samsung Store?

I agree with what falainber says above. You can buy Windows computer from $300 up to $3,000 or more. I bet Windows O.E.M.'s sell a lot more $300 computer than they do $3,000. All of them will run Windows 10.

I bought an iPhone SE on AT&T prepaid for $50 while the most expensive iPhone currently goes for over $1,400. Both run the most current version of iOS.

Most computer manufacturers sell versions across multiple price points.
Agree wish the Macs would cover more of the lower price points. Heck I like the big screens, but the cheapest Mac is $2400. And that's not even 17". I got a decent 17" for what I do for a third.

Good shout, perfect examples. Trouble is we need to beat up on Samsung so they just won't do.

Not sure why folks are going nuts over the cost? An iPhone 11 ProMax, w/ 64GB is $1099/Unlocked no trade-in. I priced an S20-Ultra w/ 128GB/Unlocked and I got a discount code during the process, so total is $1,307. Plus I get a $200 credit to get wireless earbuds, wireless charger, and portable battery. Seems pretty close to me.

I guess folks just want to argue for the sake of arguing? :)

This can't be a surprise to you. Apple moves the needle cuz Apple. Apple share's the "stage" with no one but Apple. Android handset makers always share the stage and the stage is always full year round. Multiple Android phones come out in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter every year. There's a deluge of devices competing for attention. Kinda hard to get excited for one Android device when you know another is going to introduced days after the one that just debuted. You only get Apple's primary phone once a year. Stage unto itself.

Huawei introduced that ugly squared camera bump. We heard no peep cuz other Android makers were introducing big ass circles, horizontal rectangles, vertical rectangles, pop-up cameras, flip up cameras, and a whole host of other camera module shapes. Overloaded stage was overloaded. Beyond cursory mentions, no one really paid attention. Honestly who could? Apple on the other hand, intro'd their ugly squared camera bump on a stage shared with no one. To their credit, they made that design acceptable to a large swath of the public. So other Android makers followed suit, and nobody noticed (or cared) because we've all seen that design on it's own stage so we're immune.

That squared camera bump is ugly to me. Regardless of the phone maker, that looks terrible to me. Others might not care. To each.
You are correct on all fronts. I’m all for knocking Apple when they are wrong, but the vitriol here for them is misplaced a lot.

I don’t care for the design myself, but the pictures I can take with it speaks for themselves. In fact, when I bought my 11 my wife made fun of it because of the camera. She took some pictures with it and took it all back.

The only thing I am jealous of is the size. I could definitely fit a bit more phone in my pocket.

A penny for every time I hear that one.
No phone is worth that, sure. If making/receiving calls is all it does.
A personal computer, with great cameras, sat nav, music and media player that fits in your pocket.
$1400 is the price of a computer with less.
The definition of the word phone needs re-defining since people won't stop calling them phones and continuing to do so won't drop their price either.

And I can buy a "phone" (both Android and iOS) that has all those things for far less than $1400 so I don't see your point.

The majority of phone consumers are not very fickle. The ever increasing price to enter other ecosystems is a big hurdle - most are not willing to take that loss just for the sake of trying a new platform especially when both provide the same basic functionality.

Its like the majority of truck buyers where brand loyalty is hard to break because of similar reasons. (RAM IS THE BEST!!!! ;))

^^^ This...

If I were alone, I'd move in a heartbeat because I just like to try new stuff. Moving from Apple >> Google or MS really isn't that big of a deal to me. However, moving the family and the upheaval it would cause just isn't worth it.

But it is brand loyalty for sure. I know folks that agree owning an Audi or BMW is super expensive, but they don't care. They like/want what they want. Haven't driven a RAM, only Toyota and GMC.

Apple and US carriers being in the same compliance circle testing would be seamless unlike Samsung which is not an US based OEM. Regulations are obviously different, also Apple software hardware integration is very internal whereas Samsung depends on Google with additional layer of development and testing.

As far Samsung store for unlocked version, in my country every Samsung retail show room has it every nooks and corners of cities and small towns!

no smartphones worth a $1400 price tag. it's ridiculous.

True now, have a short story to tell though.

About 24-25 years ago I bought my first mobile phone, it was expensive, like $ 2000 if you take inflation into account, could do forex on it, earned it back in about 2 weeks.(With a bit of luck)

Sooner or later Samsung will remove promotional offers and discount the phone itself by $300 plus 😁! It is unnecessary trick and the price is only going to put off potential customers, instead of reducing the prices and devalue the product line (and the early adopters) they can reduce the price significantly and never reduce it like Apple! This creates healthy brand name.
