Darn... for a fluttering second I thought it was a post of the new Apple TV.

This long wait has been painful.

I did wait for a long time too, but 10 days ago I upgraded from my Apple TV 2nd Gen to Apple TV 4K. Honestly, it feels like I bought an entirely new TV set. I love it.

(I suck at CROSSY ROADS though, even though I practice every day lol)

Are there any third party non-IR remotes out there? If the apple on just had a d-pad instead of touch surface, it would be almost perfect. just add in a few extra buttons I think.

There is also a competing streamer remote from One for All that works for AppleTV (but not Amazon Fire TV or Roku streaming sticks). Similar to the above, but also has additional buttons for TV power and TV input, as well as four dedicated streaming app buttons (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) at the bottom that can be reassigned.

Diagrams of the remote buttons here (at their fairly spartan website): https://www.oneforall.us/universal-...ital-manuals/getting-started/key-descriptions

Currently $25 at BestBuy, usually cheaper at Walmart for those so inclined.

Would be interested in a comparison between these two, if Juli had time.

What is the reason that the Function101 remote cannot have bluetooth, no Home button and no Siri button?
Is Apple the reason?

No Bluetooth is a no buy for me.

My 10 year old TV remote’s arrow- and media buttons work with the ATV through some kind of hdmi-passthrough. The ATV itself is out of sight so IR wont work. No beef with original siri remote anyway so I’m good.

Function101 remote disadvantages:
  • No Bluetooth (uses IrDA instead)
  • No rechargeable battery (two AAA instead)
  • No Apple TV app/Home button
  • No Siri button and microphones
  • Cheap plastic build
Fumction101 remote advantages:
  • Dedicated 10-second rewind/forward, stop, previous/next buttons
  • Dedicated power and mute buttons
  • Larger and more ergonomic
  • Probably more durable

I like the remote which comes with the TV. I bought one of these button remotes because someone else likes actual buttons. Also, the apple remote is touching. You bump the glass and you can get a menu to pop up. The missing home button is annoying. Also, trying to get the swipe down/up menus to appear. You have to have both remotes to actually use all the features of the TV. The soft suede like rubber top for the buttons will most likely turn into a sticky mess after awhile like this material is notorious for doing. This is why Vizio quit using it not he backing of their remotes.

I wish I had know all this more before I bought this remote.

I too hated the Siri Remote when I first got it. But 2 things changed my opinion about it.

1. Buy a cheap rubber case for it. Now it is not a tiny thin little remote that gets caught in the couch. The case also lets me know which side is up by feel, so I don't have to look. I bought a glow-in-the-dark case so I can always find it.

2. TAP the trackpad to navigate. Don't swipe. Don't press. Just tap the edges of the trackpad without pushing down, except to select.

These 2 tips made the Siri Remote perfectly usable, and I no longer find it to be a horrible remote that is annoying to use.

Hope this helps.

Is this backlit? It just boggles the mind that a remote would be released with no backlighting, this includes you Apple.

If it had a mute button, the current remote would be ok ... ish
I have seen this comment several times and while I do use my Apple TV with a remote that has a dedicated mute button, I don’t understand the desire for it on a streaming box. For live TV it makes sense, but for steaming why mute when you can pause? We are either actively watching something on the TV, or it is off. Are people watching TV so passively that muting is preferable?

This may already have been mentioned in the thread but the other issue is that apps have to be specifically written to accept input from IR commands. Zwift, for example, does not. So though you can launch or quit Zwift with this remote, you can't use it to navigate inside the app (the entire reason I purchased the Swiss one) until/unless the developer updates the app.

In those days, it couldn't be solved smarter.

Switzerland:
Marketing team, I'm sure you can think of some kind of advantage!
The larger design means it's less likely to slip in between couch cushions or... ehmm... otherwise disappear.
OK, this could work.

USA:
Apple development team, you can think of some kind of advantage.
Small and handy, fits in a pocket and doesn't need batteries.
OK, sounds cool.

Yes! I just bought this one a couple weeks ago and I love it! https://www.bestbuy.com/site/one-for-all-streamer-remote-black/6337295.p?skuId=6337295

It can control up to 3 devices but even more impressive is the fact that you can program any button on it to learn any other button on another remote you have.

So for instance if you have no use for the shortcut buttons at the bottom, you can make them anything else from another remote. I have them change the input on my sound system.

The buttons are also all backlit and the ring light around the nav buttons are a different color, which you can customize, for the selected device you are controlling.

And regarding the IR issue, I have mine hidden behind my tv but I velcro'd it at the very top middle, and I never have an issue with it not responding to the remote. The IR sensor of the AppleTV is incredibly sensitive.

Are you talking about the Apple TV remote? It’s not symmetrical. You can tell it’s orientation immediately when you touch it.
That is the problem.

I am not sure about anyone else, but when ever I grab the remote by the wrong end, all sorts of input happens from the touch surface, andI occasionally touch other buttons as well.

Don’t squeeze it.

I don’t know how you press buttons when picking it up. Even when I close my eyes and use my nondominant hand that doesn’t happen. Just run your thumb over the buttons and the volume rocker will tell you which direction it’s facing.

All IR remotes work for the Apple TV.

It looks like it has a Home button on the remote, does it actually work with the Apple TV?

If so, then maybe I will consider this.

EDIT: Based on the reviews, the home button does not work.

When it slides down the arm rest in between the arm rest and cushion is one example.

I have used the Siri Remote since October of 2015, and while there are things I like about it, trying to feel my way around to see if it is pointed the correct way is not one of those things.

I just wished it was intuitive like Apple products used to be.

I'm in the minority here, but I've thought that the AppleTV remote would be a good place to resurrect the old iPod scroll wheel.
