I guess my Halloween costume was too subtle. Face ID worked like a charm for me. On the other hand, the TouchID did not fare so well because my fingers are covered in sweat.

Apparently, naked costumes are allowed around where you live.

Hats throw it off from time-to-time.

Clearly you haven't understood politeness. You take off your hat before you talk to someone, including your iPhone.

You are correct, looking deeper it appears that all the videos are mostly commentary on that single German test. To be honest, I don’t really care as I don’t own Samsung products. My main goal was to point out that it was an Iris scanner (as opposed to retina), and it is not perfect either. I didn’t say it was any less (or more) secure than other biometrics, so not sure why you mentioned that.

Personally, I am a strong password kind of guy, so I don’t really have a horse in this race. The technology (on all platforms) is interesting though!
Well it was obvious you didn't care enough do do a proper research, you simply implied that the iris scanner can be universally hacked(no matter the phone) based on some memory you had.

That said, if you are basing your objective evaluation on how many articles or videos there are on the subject, that seems flawed.

Well if that german site's method doesn't work with the latest phones(it most likely doesn't work with the S8 either if iris scan is activated for both eyes) what other method could somebody use to get past the iris scanner?
The iris scanner doesn't have any weaknesses, it's immune to twins or people that look similar, or to young people.

I implied nothing, you applied inference to something that wasn’t even my point.

My point was to bring up that it is iris, not a retina scanner, and that it also had been defeated in previous tests.

Give me Face ID any day. It’ll only get faster and better overall with time. Touch ID has its drawbacks just like Face ID. Gloves, damp fingers, etc.

If you have gloves on, you may likely have a hat on and this is where it fails. Of course, if you have rubber gloves on for protection reasons (in the lab), FaceID works very well. I’ve had my iPhone XS since launch and definitely don’t see any improvement in speed. Wet fingers definitely was a drawback of TouchID.

You can set the option to not have to be looking at the device for it to unlock

I’ve actually switched to this and it makes FaceID much faster. The only negative here is that if it doesn’t work for whatever reason (like a bad angle), you are constantly typing in your password because FaceID gets locked out more easily.

Both would have added to the cost of an already very expensive phone, for very little in the way of additional features and functions. Sometimes my fingers get greasy at work, as I am around automated production lines. Touch ID didn’t work for me at all in those situations. I also noticed it didn’t work well when my hands were clean, but wet. In short, if you are using a non password based authentication there are going to be conditions that prevent it from working well. This isn’t even Apple specific, Android phones versions of Touch ID have the same problems and there isn’t a real Android equivalent of Face ID and the Iris scanner is more field of view limited than pretty much any other system. So if Face ID doesn’t work for you Iris scan will work even less.

So far I've had three Huawei phones, Honor 8 (backside fps), P10 Plus and P20 Pro (both front facing fps). Both P10 and P20 have far superior finger print scanners to the iPhones I've had/has (5s and 6/6plus) as they work without a problem with damp or dirty fingers, something my iPhones struggled immensely with.

So no, many modern Android phones don't have the same problems as iOS phones.

Again, Huawei Mate 20 Pro have the same type of system with dot projector and IR illuminator as Apple uses, so Android most certainly has a "real" equivalent to Face ID.

Lol at the negative spin since Apple didn't do this first. Ok.

To unlock, just tap once on the screen and hold (where the fingerprint target is). Tap to unlock. You can set it to one tap in settings. Easy peasy.

What negative spin? I went back and read the comments that existed prior to your comment... and it's just a bunch of people complaining about not having touch id any more... and some people responding saying they don't mind face id. what negative "spin" were you referring to?

No form of TouchID is the number one reason I’ll be switching platforms on my next daily driver.

Apparently, you think Face ID works with a naked person instead of just the face.

My iPhone 6 Plus was my favorite iPhone. I upgraded to the 7 Plus when it came out and regretted it. Now I have dongles to charge and use earphone jack at the same time, the home button implementation isn't as good. The only advantage I got was more storage and Portrait mode...BFD!

I still have my 6s+ 128

From my perspective, every iPhone since has been a downgrade in some way.

I'd love to have a better phone. It hasn't been made yet.

I do like Touch ID.
I like having to touch the device to unlock it.
Same here. I decided not to upgrade and keep my iphone 7 plus in order to keep Touch Id. I’ll probably jump ship to Android if Apple refuses to add support for Touch id to future devices .

The same goes with the Touch bar and butterfly keys in the new Macbook Pro . I’m sticking with the 2015 Macbook Pro until those issues ( for me ) are fixed .

I like my XS, but I do miss TouchID. There are so many instances (in bed, in the dark, Halloween, etc) where FaceID just doesn’t work, and it’s frustrating.
Yes, in optimal situations it works great. But when it doesn’t, it’s annoying.

I wish future iPhones could implement BOTH, but I know that would be costly and unlikely.
I love face is and can’t see myself using it nor needing it. It feels old and one more thing I have to do to get to my apps. Face ID is the beat decision Apple has ever made. Along with their quest for AR, you cant do AR on a button. The home button on my 10.5 ipad seems outdated and am going to upgrade this weekend to the new iPads, I’m going all in on homebuttonless devices.

it's not more secure than touch you still would need to get the persons finger weather they are sleeping or not. with face id there are many youtube videos showing twins unlocking the others iphone using face id. so no it's not more secure. so far the most secure format is retnia scan that samsung uses. i have yet to find a video of someone eles unlocking the phone that uses the retnia scanner found on some samsung devices.

This is really pretty funny. Your example is of identical twins? That’s a threat? Your identical twin sister or brother is a threat? A far more plausible threat, that has occurred is the passed out college student having his or her finger used to open their phone. FaceID wont work with the victim’s eyes closed. Your identical twin’s face is not a failure of security. The face is identical. Importantly, a stranger is not able to use your picture. Hollywood quality masks, perfect copy’s, didn’t work either. There are no cases of the FaceID being “tricked”. Not the case with the retina scan. You didn’t look to hard. It was tricked 1 month after release, with a picture of someone’s eye and a contact lens - That’s a real security vulnerability flaw. Do you have an identical twin? I didn’t think so.

My Touch ID on my iPad NEVER works. It’s actually super annoying. Face ID has been a gem. To each their own.
Sometimes it helps to change fingers. At times skin on some fingers may be worn out :p could be due to age or work. Mine worked much better on my ring finger compared to my index finger.

I miss Touch ID. To be honest, on those occasions when I do have to use my phone quickly while driving, Face ID has made me less safe. Typing in a six-digit passcode is very distracting when I'm wearing sunglasses that FaceID doesn't like.

You stole the words from my keyboard!. Millions feel the same, we just accept it because we have been taught to accept whatever Apple pushes. I want my TouchId back! Both tech are complementary, not a replacement.

That was your initial point and I didn't say anything about it.
Your second point was that there are multiple YouTube videos showing that the iris scanner was defeated with simple pictures. And this is what I addressed.

Post #197 where I explain the situation regarding the hack of S8's iris scanner.

Also from apple's page:

The statistical probability is different for twins and siblings that look like you and among children under the age of 13, because their distinct facial features may not have fully developed. If you're concerned about this, we recommend using a passcode to authenticate.

So FaceID has some inherent vulnerabilities that are not applicable to Fingerprint scanners of Iris scanners.

I prefer Touch ID, I’m still on 8 plus and iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen, maybe next year I’ll open up to Face ID

I do NOT like faceID. Not even the idea of it really... I have not used it, as I still have TouchID on my phone, but eventually I will when I replace it. I hope they come up with something better...

No doubt about it at all - Face ID as I have minor sweaty palm and fingers. So often Touch ID does not work as intended across many occasions and venues. I wish Face ID would have been made available across all product ranges from day 1 instead of now I am having to still endure Touch ID on some products (e.g. MacBook Pro), not to mention iMac which does not even have Touch ID.

Example: office where aircon is set to higher temperature due to some colleagues complaining it is too cold, as a reason, there are some of us who even sweat while working in office). Other occasions such as after exercise/workout or cooking or bath.

I do not want a phone that I have to pick up to unlock--nevermind the high price. The 8+ will likely be my last iPhone, and that will also mean changing from Homekit.
