TouchID is way better for me. I ride a motorcycle(s) and hit the slopes in winter. having to continuously tap my passcode when wearing a helmet is super annoying.

Face ID works incredibly reliably for me. Seems to be instant essentially on Xs. I prefer it to touch- No contest. Wet hands, gloves, pitch black. No problem. I think it’s more secure, since you could open someone’s phone with their finger even if sleeping/passed out.

it's not more secure than touch you still would need to get the persons finger weather they are sleeping or not. with face id there are many youtube videos showing twins unlocking the others iphone using face id. so no it's not more secure. so far the most secure format is retnia scan that samsung uses. i have yet to find a video of someone eles unlocking the phone that uses the retnia scanner found on some samsung devices.

Congratulations on your rare phone, as forums are full of complaints about the fingerprint sensor.

And this forum is full of complaints about people wanting to have at least the option to choose Face ID or Touch ID. Nope, got to be the Apple way!

It is indeed a rare phone as the phone starts at a minimum 128GB storage, comes with a fast charger, a pre-applied screen protector, a dongle (after all a ~$9 dongle that a trillion dollar company took it away from its customers). Starts at $549. Yes, it's not perfect. And nothing is perfect. Not even an iPhone. Yes. At least it didn't cost me an arm, as I'm certain will be the case to own an iPhone Xr, Xs and 'Excess Max' products. And that's just the base model.

And I'm not sure what forums you are reading and I think you probably don't own the "rare" phone. I do. With their latest update, the fingerprint sensing time is way faster. And I also own an iPhone X. I'm a fan of Apple Products but that doesn't mean I don't accept and appreciate the reality of other products.

Peace.

While you are 100% correct about distracted driving being just wrong, however, IMHO, talking to Siri is not that much different than talking to someone sitting in my passenger seat. So maybe I am missing a trick that is really the only thing I miss about TouchID.

While driving....
iPhone: Ding Ding
Me: Hey Siri, Read my text
Siri: You'll need to unlock your iPhone first

That is distracting driving at its worst as it seems like you must pick up the phone, and look directly at it to unlock. With TouchID, I could paw around to find the TouchID button. Does anyone know a way around this? If yes, no more TouchID for me.
If the phone is directly facing you, you could turn off the “Require attention for Face ID” option. That is supposed to make your phone more secure by checking for your eyes, and ensuring that they are looking at the phone before successfully unlocking.

If disabled (I haven’t tried this personally), it should unlock as long as your face is in view, without checking where your eyes are looking.

It’s still probably better you don’t use your phone while driving, but this might work for you a bit better than before...

Many of these videos were proven to be fake, and I treat youtube as falseness and untruth rather than assuming the opposite.

Having said that, some type of in-screen fingerprint reader on iphone would be awesome, but i'm not holding my breath.

Don’t miss it at all. Face ID works for me 99% of time. I use my phone laying down in bed at night a lot, and it still works just fine. Sure it can be improved, but hey, what doesn’t need improvement?!

I'm waiting for Apple to copy the idea, then "do it right " . Then listen to all the diehards proclaiming the 2nd coming of Christ as Apple re invents the wheel again

Can you explain how whilst riding a Motorbike you are doing anything with a mobile phone pls...

Can't y'all who are driving or riding just use siri to make and answer calls, send or read a text or open your phone?. Is Siri that far behind Google assistant in those mundane tasks. Even my motorcycle helmet syncs to my phone and Google assistant does the rest.

How long would that take? And that would be quite cumbersome having to look at the phone and put your finger on the reader.

For normal unlock usage, one of them would do. So either Touch ID or Face ID. For anything from Backing Login to health information etc, both should be used.

1. Why does "Dan w. MacRumors" do all the video videos. Can't they have a couple other options to rotate through. No offense Dan. At least you're not rocking the TrueCar hipster beard.

2. Why does Dan do the video but Juli has to write the article. Just sayin' this could be a one-stop operation for an article like this.

3. Sure it might not be a bad idea to show us the rumored iPhone tech that has made its way into a marketplace device. But let's be honest here. People aren't buying iPhone v everything else for the "features" or the specs. 90+ percent of people are Android or iOS and purchase based on their ecosystem and rarely cross that line. If they do, it is a shift and they either go back or adapt and don't look back. For I would think less than 10%, and that may be a high estimate, features and specs matter, and those individuals may jump back and forth between the platforms. And while MR does cater more to the tech savvy and tech-know crowd, I still think someone is missing the point.

Do you miss Touch ID and wish Apple would have worked towards an in-display fingerprint sensor, or do you prefer Face ID? Let us know in the comments.

I was going to say "no" but lately my short and to the point posts have been getting deleted and getting warned for breaking rules lol

It really stinks when you have to use both eyes when you're dead tired in bed to Unlock.

I have one eye resting in my pillow , and using another eye to use my iPhone.

I feel touch ID will make a comeback

it really does stink to HAVE use both eyes doesn't it.. lol ....

That is one of the major reasons why I am still using the iPhone 6s Plus. It had the best of everything. Touch ID and Earphone Jack. Those two things are a must for me when deciding on a phone. I have seen all the competitors but nothing has made when want to take out my sim from my unlocked iPhone 6s. Until that happen I will be in that ecosystem.

Hanging on to my SE, one handed marvel with Fingerprint ID and earphone jack, as long as possible.

"Apple's Face ID technology is still so advanced"

NOT so much. My launch day iPhone X frustrates me to no end. Unlocks in my pocket all the time and if I am on my favorites screen it calls a bunch of people. I take all kinds of screen shots because of the layout and Siri randomly says krap for whatever reason.

How ever I miss TOUCH ID more than anything. It is cold where I live now. So I am wearing a hat/cap etc. Face ID FAILS! My Oakley sunglasses trip it up all the time. sitting on my desk at work/home want to unlock it....bring it to my face or my face to it.....simply sucks.

At times I wish I would drop it and it would die or I would lose it and get a iPhone 8!

I am just tired of Apple dictating how it should be. They are increasingly getting it wrong. Perfect example my 2107 Macbook Pro 15 inch. I hate the keyboard, the touchbar is simply stupid and I really....really.....really miss magsafe. Oh yeah Dongle hell is not fun!!!

So we get all excited about FaceID being more better, an secure alternative way since Apple couldn't get TouchIS to work under the screen. Now OnePlus has got one, would 'wet the whiskers' of Tim to have a final shot?

"Oh,, well someone else has done something we just couldn't do..... oh look, we can finally overcome that step very easily'

I thought Apple wanted a challenge... Either their being secretive about it, or just it's now on the back burner because they now have FaceiD - "giving up so easily"

To me, if you give up, your coward... The opposite of what Apple said they could accomplish.

It’s an iris scanner, not retina.

There are also YouTube videos showing that being defeated with simple pictures taken with an IR sensitive camera, that system was defeated well before FaceID came out so it really hasn’t been news for quite some time.

I do it often while pulled over on the side of the road — maybe I want to send a text message or take a photo for example (I know, you can take photos without unlocking, but I prefer a third party camera app). Some people (not me) have speakers in their helmet and might like to select a different album or podcast.

On longer rides I also use my phone as a GPS.

Removing a glove is simple, grab it by the finger tips and pull, then place it on the handlebars.

Removing the helmet involves many steps:
  1. take off my backpack, find the case for my sunglasses
  2. take off my sunglasses, place them in the case (they're expensive and I can only afford to buy a new pair every 2 years. If they get scratched, I'll just have to live with the scratch)
  3. put my backpack back on my back (where else am I going to place it? Not in the dirt on the side of the road)
  4. undo two buckles on the helmet — one holds the helmet on my head, the second stops the strap from flying around in the wind and hitting me in the neck dozens of times per second. I can't see the buckles, which makes this tricky.
  5. Remove the helmet.
  6. Place the helmet... where? In the dirt? Nope. Balance it on the bike where it might fall off? No way. I guess I'll have to awkwardly hold the helmet in one hand while typing a text into the phone. Try not to drop either of them — but if you need to pick one, drop the fancy iPhone. It's cheaper and less likely to be damaged if dropped onto asphalt.
  7. Repeat the steps 5 through 1 in reverse order to put the helmet and sunglasses back on.
In cold weather it's worse, since I'll be wearing a balaclava to protect my neck and lower face from the elements. Because helmets are very tight, your balaclava will be pushed out of the way while putting on the helmet and you'll have to reach in under the helmet to adjust it. Forget about doing that while wearing gloves - so add removing both gloves and putting them back on to the list of things needed to unlock with Face ID.

If I ever "upgrade" to a phone with Face ID, there is no chance I'll take off my helmet to use it. I'll be typing in my password instead - which is long and complicated enough I frequently need to type it in more than once to get my phone to unlock.

There is only one clip and that's all. One clip where a german site was able to get past S8's iris scanner specifically and that's it.
Also they didn't use a simple picture.
First the Iris scanner was set to work only with one eye(it can be set to work with both eye and it would be more secure that way)
Second they used a high resolution ir picture of somebody's eye. The picture needs to be detailed and in perfect focus.
Third they used contact lenses to try to better mimic a real eye
Forth they implied it works better with some Samsung printers meaning that their method of getting past the iris scanner is not very reliable.
Fifth none of the phones Samsung launched after the S8 had their iris scanners hacked in any way.

So I don't see how saying that Samsung's Iris Scanner is objectively the most secure biometric authentication method is not correct.

As a oneplus 6T owner I call this bull crap. Fingerprint reader works fine no delays. In fact my Face Id does not always work.
It is after al a subjective overview of the OP6T's fingerprint scanner.
The main purpose of this article is to justify iphone's Face ID and that's all.

I like my XS, but I do miss TouchID. There are so many instances (in bed, in the dark, Halloween, etc) where FaceID just doesn’t work, and it’s frustrating.
Yes, in optimal situations it works great. But when it doesn’t, it’s annoying.

I wish future iPhones could implement BOTH, but I know that would be costly and unlikely.
Never thought about the dark issue. I haven’t had my XR long enough to experience this yet.
