It is so the swipe from bottom gesture doesn’t get impeded. I wish my case for my XS was built that way. Instead I scrape up agains the case edge when swiping. It is less than ideal.

Anyway, There is only a small portion of the bottom that is not protected and the phone will not be hit if the phone falls on a flat surface even with that bottom falling first. I’d gladly take that minimimal extra risk. Frankly, all I really want are the corners to be covered. That is where the phone is going to hit if it falls on the floor.
Well as myself and others have pointed out, we have still had problems with the bottom hitting, and I've only dropped my iPhone a few times ever. Also this design at least goes back to the iPhone 6 Plus, which had no bottom gestures at all whatsoever, so I think that debunks that idea—especially when you consider most cases available for iPhone X/R/XS/Max have a bottom edge and you don't hear about people complaining.

Spigen or Otterbox.. and why does Apple hate to protect the bottom of its phones?

they don't want the case to interfere in the slightest with the new iPhone swipe gesture from the bottom. Before that I think it extended from the days of the 30 pin connector fitting.

Why is everyone suddenly outraged about the price of their cases? They have always been $40 for silicone and $50 for leather. This isn't new....

Exactly. Their cases are ALWAYS over priced but you know they will fit perfectly and any issues like yellowing will be dealt with in a far more professional manner at an Apple Store vs. some online retailer. Personally? I wish this same case was for sale for the iPhone XS and XS Max.

I want to know who at Apple hates protecting the bottom of the iPhone and why? This is the dumbest thing about all of their otherwise excellent cases.
Otherwise all the adapters that they sell won't fit :)
