Darn do I want one. Only problem is my Air 2 still runs perfectly smooth.
Could always “accidentally” drop test it just for giggles and a handful of Youtube hits

Seriously, just gift it on to partner/child/elderly relative, and everyone’s happy ;)

Many Apple stores have it in stock. You might want to check your area so you don’t have to wait until 11/21.

Wish they’d stop stating ‘edge-to-edge’. It’s not even close!

The term means the display/glass is edge to edge. Apple didn’t invent this term. It was used by Dell first for their Precision laptop line about 12 years ago.

You should have a dark border around the edges. It makes the colours really stand out.

My first impressions are me really wishing it were OLED. Watching telly on it in bed the blacks still really glow.

Also, I think they should have put the FaceID sensors in the long edge, as it's often covered by my hand where it is on the short edge. The long edge has two advantages - being longer there are more alternative places for your hand to go, and an iPad, or at least a 12.9" iPad, is more likely to be used in landscape than portrait, I suspect.

Still though, it feels lovely, and turn times in Civ are considerably faster than they were on my Air 2 (26 seconds vs 45 seconds - I timed it from the save save.).

When looking at the pictures, the bezels look way thicker on the new iPad over my 10.5” Pro. It may not make a big difference once you are using it.

Here is the real turd in the punch bowl. You can’t put it in a case for protection if you want to use the keyboard. The folio gives no protection along the sides of the iPad, and since they moved the connector you have to use the stupid folio. It also seems that you can’t split the virtual keyboard for thumb typing like you could with the old 10.5 pro. Just like the original 12.5 pro I hate that about it.

Everything else about it I love. Someone needs to occasionally give Jonny a firm talking to about practicalities vs design...

The iPad pro is fairly expensive, so there's no particular reason for it not to have 8gb ram like a laptop, which are sold with 8gb at similar prices. It's just that Apple are masters of holding back features, making people want to upgrade in 2-3 years.

Even if you pay premium prices, there's always some catch remaining. Like, why keep lightning on the just released iPhone XS? Why is the base model Air sold with 128gb storage?

Don’t think so. A similar question was asked on Marco Arment’s twitter feed.
But it can share it wirelessly while charging the phone, so it's not too bad.

HUGE ISSUE!!!!

I just got my new 11” pro today (upgraded from 10.5” pro) and I have a really big complaint with the Smart Keyboard. Who the hell designed it because they should be fired! It doesn’t sit on your lap....it just falls backwards onto the floor. Go ahead try it for yourself.

The 10.5” sits nicely on your lap. This is crap and I’m returning the whole damn thing now!
Mine seems OK, but I'll try properly when I get home.

My big complaint is it has no escape key, so how do you reject autocorrect suggestions using it? Seems you have to use the screen :(

Mine did as well. FaceID believe it or not was my main driver in wanting a new model. The new ones are even smoother than the Air 2 depending upon what you're doing with it. General browsing and News type things is about the same. It has been a good upgrade so far and plan to get 3 years like I did with my Air 2.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. I’m using Lightroom CC right now full screen. Works very well. Maybe I don’t understand your comment???

The 11" iPad Pro has a different screen geometry that will require updates on apps by developers. The 12.9" is the same as the previous one so there should be no black bars with iPad designed apps.

My original Air just feels too sluggish now, especially when loading sites with lots ads. So I'm trading it in for an 11" one.

Let us know how it works on your lap for sure. I also ordered the 11" and thinking about getting the keyboard in the future.

Looks like a real computer. Costs like one too. But ... isn’t. And the little boy asked “Daddy, why.” And his father sighed and replied ... “Son, sometimes people get sidetracked and get stuff cos it’s ‘new’ not for any other reason”

Father was wrong here. The point is its not a computer. Its a tablet. Pretty big mistake from daddy - the boy will need therapy for this for years....

This might be a silly question but has anyone tried using one of the file browsing apps available of app store to see if you can then use a USB C connected external drive with a ipad pro? or are the apps blocked from it

Does the camera volcano on the back cause the iPad to wobble when resting on a flat surface?

I won’t have mine until the weekend, but I’ve read that it doesn’t. I remember them saying that it produced a “tripod effect” with the bump and one edge of the body.

I got my 12.9 today with the keyboard and pencil. I like it so far. The last iPad I had was the very first one. I haven’t used one in a few years.

I can’t get the pencil to work, though. It is paired via Bluetooth and is charging. I’m not sure what the issue is. It worked once, but never again.

Not going to lie - definitely not my favorite Apple design. Seems very bland, and the screen is too square. Also, it's definitely NOT an edge-to-edge display. Design is subjective, but color me unimpressed.

Speed and responsiveness is flawless, but then again, so was the 2017 iPad Pro. Definitely best in class, two years running.

My biggest, and major gripe, is with Pro workflows. Apple is pushing this as a laptop replacement. We are getting full Adobe, etc. We got USB-C! So, we can just plug in our memory card reader or external hard drive, and copy files back and forth, right? NOPE! It's either handled as pictures and going into Film Roll, or nothing. A super fast CPU, awesome GPU, fantastic screen, pro apps, and large file exchange does not exist.

There is literally no good way to use all this power right now, the limitations of iOS and conscious Apple decisions pretty clear. This is like putting a Formula 1 engine in a Honda Accord, and selling it for $80k.

Just got the 11”, keyboard folio, and new pencil.

The keyboard folio has a strong, spicy odor. I noticed it as soon as I took it out of the box. The keyboard feels the same as the old one, but now it has a larger base - which is more stable when I use it on my lap.

I like that the new pencil sticks to the iPad, and charges while connected. With my old one, it looked goofy sitting in a meeting with the pencil sticking out of the end of the iPad. I also like the double-tap for erase mode.

The screen really isn’t nearly edge-to-edge (the screen is closer to the sides on the 10.5”), but I’m glad - because otherwise it would be hard to hold without accidentally interacting with the screen.

The new squared edges look and feel very good.

Now if only... Apple would add mouse support to iOS for us business users. I still have to carry a Mac or Surface Pro to work on spreadsheets, documents, diagrams, etc. My finger is not a precise cursor, and I don’t like having to reach up and touch the screen when I’m working on a document.

Absolutely.

Was at the Apple store today and tried the new Air and iPad Pro.

Air looks great - and v much like the MBP - but immediately you can see that the processor isn’t that great.

The iPad’s performance is astonishingly fast and smooth. If anyone still doubts that an A class SoC isn’t ready to replace Intel in the Mac - or even that Apple isn’t going to make the switch - try out the new iPad Pro. It’s ready and they will.

However, I totally agree with you. I missed a trackpad immediately. The interaction model seems bizarre switching back and forth from direct to indirect interaction.

With a great folio keyboard and a Systen that feels faster than most laptops not having trackpad support in the product increasingly feels perverse.

At this point in time it feels that iOS is holding the iPad back.

Hopefully next year will see Apple significantly add power to iOS on the iPad (it still feels like a smartphone OS) - and add trackpad support!

Jonny Ive, was that you designing these extraordinary small Return and Backspace keys for the German Keyboard on the IPP 11 ? This is not what I would call „truly innovating user interface design“.

Oh please. You have to intentionally bend the iPad to make it break. The guy even said it in the vid, it’s not going to break with real world use. Also, if you spend 1k on a device and carelessly fling It in your backpack around all the time, that’s on you, not Apple.

Totally. Practically every laptop will smash easily. I guess you get more clicks by smashing up a new iPad though...
