A pretty pointless application for the Apple TV 4K given that the all modern 4K TV's have the ability to run the Amazon Prime Video application within their own OS anyways.
Not at all. TV manufactures have a poor record of updating the TV OS. Having an app on Apple TV or other box means you can easily update your app and it is far less expensive to buy a new Apple TV or other box when needed than it is to buy a new TV.

It works now. 5.1 fixed.

It looks like it is slowly propagating across the system. 10 minutes ago it started playing UHD titles in 5.1. but not Grand Tour. Then one of the 4K movies was still in stereo. 2 minutes later that stereo movie started playing 5.1. Now Grand Tour is also playing in 5.1

Yes, I am now noticing some movies in 5.1 and not others. It's good to see the quick response from Amazon. I wish I knew why the technology requires it to roll out slowly rather than just turn on.

Tried to set up amazon Prime Video on my Apple TV4. Tried to enter my credentials for Amazon prime but it would not accept them. Why did I have to go to a browser? My Amazon account credentials were entered properly?

I had to go to Amazon.com/myTV, and enter a code in a box that did not exist. Clicked on links on a page that were not good. Had to do some Google searching and finally found a page that allowed me to enter the code. What a joke.

The app does work pretty well though. Much better than the DirecTV Now app that is an unbelievable pile of garbage.

Perhaps it’s some bulldrip with HDCP 2.2? I had to deal with that hedache when setting up my theater system. The 5.1 reciever I bought (despite being a 2016 model) only supported HDCP 1.4 - a strategic deficancy - to up sell their more expensive 7.1 system (that I didn’t need).
I have yamaha 3070 the latest 4k receiver supporting hdmi 2.2 and again i tunes and my 4k movies work with no problems

I agree, it does smell like an HDCP issue (I've seen this before when you just get nothing on the other end for no apparent reason). Whether that's on the Prime app end or the Samsung tv end it's hard to say, it could be that the tv is not presenting itself and its capabilities correctly, or Prime from ATV isn't reading it correctly and sending the wrong thing.

Another possibility along the same lines is that it's forcing a format the cable can't handle. For example, 12-bit 4:4:4 color, 4K @ 60 Hz. This would be something even 18 Gbps HDMI cables could not handle, but if you have an older 10 Gbps ("high speed") cable, there would be a lot more formats that would not work. For example 4K @ 60 Hz with 10-bit 4:2:0 color cannot be handled on 10 Gbps HDMI cables. So first step is make sure you're using a newer 18 Gbps ("ultra high speed") cable if you're watching 4K HDR content. These are really cheap now, I just got a pack of 2 6-foot Amazon Basics 18 Gbps HDMI cables for $7.
This is the cable i have: HDMI Cable 6ft - HDMI 2.0 Ready (UHD 4K @ 60Hz, 18Gbps) - Braided Cord (28AWG) - Ultra High Speed - Ethernet & Audio Return - Video 4K 2160p, HD 1080p, 3D - Xbox, PlayStation, PS3, PS4, PC, Apple TV
So i dont think its the cable, and again my 4k movies ( infuse) and itunes 4k movie play smoothly only the amazon app is not working...

My Sammy has Just the one hdcp compliant port and when I tried this morning Amazon 4k stuff works. However I always have handshake issues with the TV (Sky and X box) on this port so I’m going to stick to my regular hdmi and watch 4k through the built in TV app. Not ideal but as I said before I can’t be bothered to change ports just for Amazon 4k. Now I have to persuade the other half we need a new connect box with multiple hdcp compliant ports - wish me luck !

Crap article Macrumors! You don't even point out the crappy audio quality. This POS is not getting onto my AppleTV!

I have issues with Netflix sometimes as well. Had a problem with Amazon playing 1080p content last night too. The only solution I've had to get Amazon, and Netflix when that happens, to work is force restarting the entire ATV box. Force quitting the apps is not enough. But rebooting does work, both for 1080p and 4K contens. That's definitely a bug. Like you, my HDMI cables allow me to switch into 4.2.2 video mode just fine, and otherwise works for all 4K HDR streams on iTunes. So it's not likely the cable.

So i figured out whats going on unlike other apps in tvos the amazon app forces 4k HDR ( the others will follow whatever y setup in the apple tv settings( i have it 4k sdr 60hz)) , i confirmed by using my yamaha receiver... since my tv is not a hdr tv, the app wont play the content

Here's an interesting little bug, when switching resolutions while inside the Amazon app. The only way to get proper alignment is to force quit the app and relaunch in the new format setting (simply exiting and returning won't do it) This is going from 1080p to 4K I believe. The menus continue to be in 1080p, even though the movie is displayed in 4K after the switch. when going from 4K to 1080p, the lower left quadrant of the 1080p display only is magnified to fill the entire screen, even though the movie is displayed full screen normally. This makes me think even more that the delay was in large part due to Apple not providing auto format switching upon release, and suggests we'll eventually get auto resolution matching as well, or Amazon will have to fix this.

Interesting. I can turn off HDR on my TV, so I'll try and see what happens when I turn it off.

Love having the app but the sound issue must be fixed, everything I tried playing was 2.0 sound. My ATV4 plays 5.1/7.1 fine on everything else.

Finally tried the app over the weekend to watch 'Allied." PQ was on par to what I get with Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc. Even though I have an older plasma HDTV. Audio was ok coming out of my soundbar speakers.

Sill not a huge fan of their UI, but I'm sure I will eventually get used to it. I'm just happy there is a native Prime Video app now on my ATV4.

If you define 'pointless' to mean 'this is already done somewhere else so isn't required'... then sure. It's pointless.

However, doesn't that apply to most useful parts of technology? Email? Pointless! We have the post office. Online banking? Go to the bank! Text messaging? Pickup the phone and call them! Phone calls? Remember land lines?

It's never pointless to have another level of integration. This makes Amazon Prime truly useful for TV owners, both because it doesn't require switching to another UI *and* because it fully integrates the media into a consolidated UI.

Everyone wins!

Yes, I wonder if they just didn't know what they were talking about when they said it would be available on the 2nd Gen ATV, or if they discovered it was a bigger pain than not, or if they delivered it and it didn't work as intended on the ATV 2, and a fix is forthcoming? It's a fairly simple port for that original box, I would think, though I noticed that the Hulu app stopped working on my ATV 2 -- it would get hung up in the commercials and keep resetting to the start of the program. I assume the ATV 2 is low on Apple's list of priorities, so even if a developer releases a bug fix, Apple isn't likely to rush it into review, and upload it to the devices.

Having universal search for Amazon app is amazing. So much better than the clunky way I was forced to search on my Sony TV App. Yes, I have iOS remote apps for the TV, but there's no consistent UI rules across apps, so text entry in search fields is inconsistent at best, and awkward for most. Siri is mostly a dream with the TV.

Now if only Siri would allow me to change the format resolution with a voice command instead of making me navigate the settings menus.
It would seem like it shouldn’t be a big deal for ATV 2 as the main difference is 720p for ATV 2, 1080p for ATV 3, but, the 2 has Apple TV os 6.something (based on iOS 7), 3 has 7.something (based on iOS 8), so they may have had some issue having to be restricted to, essentially, iOS 7, where the iOS app requires iOS 9.

And, I agee universal search helps me like Prime Video on the ATV.

Still broken and it's 2019! Logged a couple of support tickets and they just ignore them. My 10 year old PS3 gets 5.1 on titles where the Apple TV is stereo.
