I have a lot of Apple products and only got a USB-C to USB-C cable with my MacBook. Only people with iPad Pro or a relatively new iPad Air have these cables. I would say that most people in the ecosystem do not have these cables.
I have 2 USBC iPads and my MacBook. I also have a few switches that use USB C. However I also have my iPhone, AirPods max, AirPods Pro 1st and 2nd gen and four previous gen Apple TV remotes that use lightning. I’m the only person in my house that uses Apple products so I have lots of spare lightning cables around. My husbands phone uses USB C and my kids tablets and switches use USB C so there’s more competition for the cables in the house.

Pointless upgrade for ATV 4K users..
Apple products aren’t the only devices using usb c cables. Laptops use them. Nintendo switches use them. A family using a mix of apple and android devices should have at least one lying around as well. Even the Samsung T5 drive I purchased came with a usb c data cable (which can also be used for charging).

I really don’t think they are as rare as you are making them out to be.
I was responding to someone who said that anyone with a couple of Apple products would have these cables. You are just proving my point, as you are mentioning all kinds of non-Apple products only. Whether or not you have these cables, depends on what products you buy. For some, they have tons of these cables. For others, they have none. Personally, I have only two.

Fair enough point. 😬

Sounds like you are in the sweet spot between the many devices you own, to have some of these cables. And even though you have them, it sounds like you may not have enough of them because of the competition for the cables.

Yes exactly this. My husband also doesn’t look after his cables or devices for that matter so I’m always having to give him mine to use and having to replenish them. It’s easier with lightning because I’m the only one who uses that particular type of cable. I’m careful with my stuff and my lightning cables last for years and I have so many still in the boxes that I’ve not even had to use yet. I wish I could say the same for USB-C.

Pointless upgrade for ATV 4K users..
I can report having replaced my 2017 ATV4K with the 2022 ATV4K a significant difference in performance opening apps, beginning streaming, no buffering delays. How could there not be? The A10X with 3GB of RAM vs A15 with 4GB of RAM. Faster Wi-Fi as well. I sold my 2017 model for $75 and went with the 64GB 2022 ATV4K model as I don’t need Thread or Ethernet, so it was a $60 upgrade and well worth it.

As far as the USB-C remote, I welcome that as many of my Apple devices are now USB-C.

Has anyone tried pairing the 1st gen Siri Remote with the new 2022 ATV4K3?

I just got my new ATV delivered and was going to swap the Siri Remote with one of my older ATVs, but wasn't sure if the 1st gen Siri Remote could be used with the new ATV.
Do you want to do this for gaming purposes? I’ve noticed several games on the App Store are only compatible with Gen 1-3 Apple TV remotes. They don’t work at all with the Gen 4-5 remotes.

Was worth the upgrade over last years model. Use case--switching between multiple football games. Much faster, much smoother, better experience for my use case. Now, with that power, we need Picture in Picture or multi channel display. I know I can do that in the ESPN app, but not all the games are on ESPN. A back button would also be a great boon. Just give us the multi channel capabilities we had in 2005 on cable.

Does the new Apple TV remote have improved IR learning support. According to Apple my amplifier was unsupported on previous models, even though every programmable remote I have ever purchased can be programmed to work with my amplifier.

You don’t have hdmi passthrough or eArc?
Only on the tv. ATV consistently turns the tv on/off when it wakes/sleeps, so I never need the tv remote. And this is still an HD household anyhow. Someday the trusty Pioneer plasma tv will die and I’ll be sad, but I won’t upgrade the tv or the sound bar until then.

For my TV, I run the sound out of my TV through the Optical Cord. When my very old sound bar (6yrs) receives the signal from the TV turning on it also turns on. Then the Apple Remote uses the IR to control the sound volume on the sound bar.
That’s a nice feature. My sound bar is from 2011 and I also use optical and just checked the manual, just in case, but no luck.

EDIT: I just had an idea and confirmed that someone has done it. The mute button can learn any IR command, so I could use the mute button to turn my sound bar on and off.

Love my AppleTV 4k. But am I the only one who despises the Siri button on the side? It's bad design. If you're right handed and have the remote at your side, it is incredibly easy to accidentally hit that button when you pick up the remote. Then whatever you may be watching gets interrupted and you end up at the home screen when all you wanted to do was change the volume. I have larger hands, but still.
Maybe a case which would require a little more deliberate pressure to activate the button would help?

What’s the appeal for 128GB of storage for a tabletop tv box that mainly used for streaming? Those so-called “graphically intensive game” can’t be more than 20GB in size per game right? Offline viewing? Content can’t be transferred outside of Apple TV so who cares…
Those 4K Dolby Vision screen savers are about 1 GB each.

Just speaking from my own personal experience, I literally have no USB-C charging cables.

The closest I have is one TB3 cable that is currently in use.

I wished there was a charging cable in the box.
Anker / UGREEN have plenty of USB C cable to purchase. Apple don’t really make the best cables for longevity.

I use both Apple and Anker USB-A to Lightning cables, and have noticed these differences.

Apple:
- Thinner than Anker, both the wire and the actual plug
- Starts to fray sooner, especially at the lighting port side
- Tend to work longer than Anker, even though it is frayed
- Expensive if paying retail
- Really cheap if buying on eBay

Anker
- Thicker than Apple, including the plug (which was an issue for me in my wife's car)
- More ridged, probably from the thicker cable
- Can look perfectly fine, but can be broken or work intermittently
- Cheaper than Apple if paying retail
- Not really much cheaper than Apple on eBay

Anyways, it is kind of besides the point, both have pros and cons. For me, the biggest pro for Apple cables for the longest time was that there was always one in the box to replace one of my fraying ones.

Charging cables are more consumable, and if Apple truly didn't want to include the cable for environmental reasons (doubt it), it would have been nice for Apple to have an option to include it separately for people that wanted/needed it. That would be a win/win for everyone involved.

VLC - storing my offline movies, series to watch instead of saturating home routers…. For me enough to trade in last year version

Why would any one want to buy this when the Nvidia shield is $50 more and does so much more?

Biggest hassle I had was it didn’t save the log in details for all the apps from my previous atv 4K mk 1 when I swapped it over , total pita tbh

Otherwise definitely note the ui is snappier 😂
