I said "play. Ought are before Xmas" and it took me directly there. Why would I navigate to the Netflix app and search for it?

It's not apples fault the broadcast (traditional and cable) have a stranglehold on the current model. It's a high profit model that benefits them. They won't be going down without a fight. Seems the changes will happen over time but it will happen eventually.

Your last comment proves you have no idea what you're talking about. Amazon CHOSE to not create an app for the Apple TV. Just like they chose not to sell any other streaming devices besides their own. It's 100% on Amazon.

Meh. Look, most people know what show they want to watch and jump to HBO Go or whatever and find it fast.

When Apple gets their **** together and can integrate with all services and can eliminate the cable box, I'll be impressed.

Even if the future is no cable and all streaming, Apple doesn't even allow all services such as Amazon. So, it's always gonna be half baked.

"Show me the movie called 28 days later" or "go to the movie called 28 days later works fine. Open right up to it.

Searched for a movie (Benny & Joon was the only one I could think of) with and ampersand and it opened right up no problem.

When Siri works, it's great.

But it really needs work. Siri remains a bit daft. Search for "28 days later" and it tells me it can't play movies in the future. Search for a movie with an "&" in the title and it can't find it. Search by actor, and it shows up.

Loving the new Apple TV, but I'm disappointed with Siri.

Nope. Both Roku and Samsung smart TVs have native Amazon Prime Instant Video apps.

That's right. I watch Amazon Prime on my Roku 3 all the time. That is in addition to 1000s of other services ("channels") Rokus have, including being able to access subscription TV channels via SlingTV:

https://www.sling.com/devices

SlingTV is available for iOS, so it might come to tvOS.

... Apple wants Amazon or would allow it but it is amazons issue not apples. I would boycott Amazon till they give in.

Rokus of course don't have iTunes. Because APPLE won't make that available on any other TV device then their own.

Should I boycott Apple because they won't make iTune available for my Roku? :)

As an aside, the Roku 4 out already with 4K Ultra HD (however right now some units have problems with overheating according to review on Amazon... So probably wait and see on that device too).

Remember when it became passé to make voice phone calls to talk to people? The cell phone turned into the device you use to text people and access the web and send messages on social networking apps.

Now, when people watch TV, it's too much work to push buttons on handheld devices. Instead, the hot new thing is to speak to the handheld device to communicate with a computer.

Yeah except it doesn't work with your own damn library! I have almost 500 movies in iTunes. Only a tiny few are from the iTunes store (because DRM is a real turnoff when you want to watch it on another brand player or move away from Apple). So what good is Siri here? At all? Period? FRACKING USELESS is what Siri is. I have around 9000 songs. Most are from my own CD collections. Others were from Amazon and what not since they were far cheaper than iTunes in many cases. Can Siri search those (my primary source of listening to music) ? NOPE. Even the Ford Fusion I rented while on vacation back in 2012 could respond to my own music library on an iPod! 2015 and Apple's own system? NOPE. SCORE APPLE! YOU RULE!

What about using your iOS device or Remote app to set this baby up? NOPE. 3rd Gen ATV can do it. This cannot. SCORE APPLE! YOU RULE!

4K? NOPE. No one has it the fans cry! (well a lot of people have it, but Apple hasn't set it up to sell you crap yet so they don't care if you have it already or not).

Surely this thing rules with the game! Here comes my controller and Borderlands 2! Oh wait. It's for casual gaming only and you MUST be able to play it with the controller so there goes 90% of the games worth playing in the world. SCORE APPLE! YOU RULE!

Hey! I've got Amazon Prime and this AppleTV has the new App Store (how do I search this App store to see if this device has anything I'd want to consider buying to use? I don't see it in iTunes and I don't see it on the App Store. I guess you have to BUY ONE FIRST in order to see what software is available! Wow. Just Wow. Oh and there is no Amazon Prime player and likely never will be. SCORE APPLE! YOU RULE!

Surely with all these limitations, this thing must be a good deal, right? NOPE. $150-200 while the 4K competition costs nearly half that! And you can get Kodi for FireTV (even the new one and even though Amazon removed official support for it in their store; it's still simple to sideload into a different App launcher). You CAN get Kodi for the new AppleTV, right? NOPE. SCORE APPLE! YOU RULE!

Hey! I can connect my speakers to this thing AND my TV, right? I me an I don't want to listen to music on my TV speakers, but I do like to watch TV shows with the TV speaker sometimes as it's quieter (plus it needs the HDMI signal anyway). NOPE. You MUST either buy a separate break-out box (usually around $30-60) or have a full blown receiver with proper HDMI pass-through or you get NO SOUND except through the TV. This is because they DITCHED the Optical output (and ditched the handy RCA stereo output since Gen2). So you pay $90-140 MORE for the new fancy schmancy AppleTV and yet the Gen1-3 models had better connectivity!!! You can still buy the Gen3 model for $69 brand new and it has optical output! WTF APPLE!???!?! YOU DON'T REALLY RULE AT ALL ANYMORE DO YOU!!?!??

That's cause Of KODI and that is no longer supported on ATV2. I would not purchase a ATV2 knowing KODI support is gone

Well you can still run the older versions and anyone is free to pick up development if you so desire. The problem is that since you can't buy the Gen2 model anymore and they never were able to jailbreak the Gen3 model, there's no longer a real supply of them anymore and Gen2 doesn't even have 1080p support. You can buy a $39 FireTV Stick from Amazon and run the newest Kodi with full 1080p support even.

Whoever made the new keyboard needs to be fired, and you can no longer use the iOS remote app for typing things in. It takes forever!

I don't know what's sadder, the fact they didn't seem to think it was needed (does anyone at Apple actually USE this thing for testing???) or the fact they thought putting the entire alphabet on a single line was a totally awesome idea for the new trackpad function (even though it does work in more than one dimension!!!) It gets better still, though. The damn thing really wants you to enter your password every single time you rent a movie or buy something for security purposes! Have fun entering those new super long complex passwords Apple now wants on iTunes! ;)

A SMART system would have used an iOS device as a security sign-off on such things (i.e. you are present and your iPhone is present on you and thus simply starting a security sign-in type app would automagically authenticate you for any purchases on this new AppleTV. If freaking Yahoo can figure this out for their email password system, WTF can't Apple??? I'd fire the whole damn staff at Apple starting with Tim!

You wouldn't just wait for the remote app update? Wow. And it's because you need to spin while using an Apple TV? Are you that lady in that one video who threw a fit because you needed an appointment at the Genius Bar?

Wait for the Remote app update? WTF didn't Apple have the damn Remote app updated BEFORE they released the new AppleTV??? What kind of freaking geniuses do they have at Apple to not figure that out and that this ridiculous logon system might piss a LOT of people off including reviewers and review sites that get their hands on this thing early on??? Give me a break. Stop making excuses for a dumb arse company that can't even figure out the BASICS before they go to global release on something. This should not have been an issue and there is NO EXCUSE for it.

These forums are fascinating. In general they attract many people who love to be negative a find reasons to bash products and companies. They don't attract many users who are happy with their products and would rather spend time enjoying them than reading forums.

You made a decision that the atv 4 is a dud based upon posts made here. Yet you have no idea of how many are enjoying the atv 4, as I am, and who think it's a great product, albeit not perfect, as I do.

It's hard to be positive about a total POS.... This box could have been so much more. And I've been with AppleTV since the first year it came out! The Gen3 box is better in almost every way possible. Siri is useless for your own home libraries (you know the thing they encouraged you to have with the 1st Gen ATV that was based entirely off iTunes when it first came out). The box has no separate audio outputs (you need a breakout box or a surround receiver to hook it up to a basic stereo; I have a high-end analog only system upstairs and so yeah, it doesn't do video switching). This is just Apple saving a quarter (literally). The setup issues, etc. are all Apple not being prepared to release the thing. It's like a BETA version. It's BS. I won't buy one.

I'm planning on getting a FireTV (maybe just the stick version) and possibly a 3rd Gen ATV just for iTunes rentals and whole-house audio syncing. I have to buy the breakout box anyway, so it won't be any trouble to plug in both and it will still cost less (FireTV Stick + ATV Gen3) than this POS!

Amazon made the business decision to keep their streaming service off Apple TV, it's not a case of Apple not allowing it. Amazon believe they can complete with Apple in the streaming space and are keeping their own streaming service for their own devices.

All these posts are strange. Amazon has a well supported iPad and iPhone app. Who knows what kind of deal Apple required to get on the old Apple TV.

Amazon will have an app on the new Apple TV. It is strange that people think they won't. Amazon will have at least two apps on the Apple TV (Video and Music). I would not be surprised if they didn't throw in a third too.

Nothing but an anti-Apple post with blatant advertisement for Roku. Criticism is one thing but to advertise other company's products.....I thought this was an Apple-Enthusiast site. :p

Apple required Amazon to write an app for the Apple TV. You were expecting Apple to write it for them?

Yes, because Amazon doesn't want our money.

And no Apple-managed app store on iOS or OS X is "open for all". If that was true, there would be no relentless efforts to jailbreak Apple devices (which is pretty much about getting to put apps on them that Apple won't allow).

Apple picks & chooses what gets in and what doesn't... and/or makes the requirements overly onerous so that some apps just can't work well within Apple's guidelines... and/or makes the revenue sharing so onerous that the math can't work for some businesses that would otherwise love to be in there.

Yes, Amazon would rather sell Fire TVs so they can maximize their profits on the products they make and sell... just like Apple.
I agree with much of what you say except Apple lets tons of other services that take their profit on their devices. Music, tv and movies that you could be buying in iTunes are available other ways on their devices without jail breaking.

I feel like the  tv3 was never maxed out to its full potential. Had storage for no real reason and runs on iOS but doesn't seem like it. Seems like a update could have made that product do almost everything this 4 does. I can't justify keeping this thing. Returning it. First ever  product Returned by me.

So one thing I'm confused with. Siri doesn't work with HBO go or showtime anytime? Only the subscription apps? Cause I do pay for HBO and showtime. Just not outside my cable bill.

I got mine yesterday. Disappointed with text entry and no Siri support there. Kind of sucks.

I have never owned an Apple TV so was completely flabbergasted by the Apple TV being unable to play half the videos in iPhoto. That is horrible. They play fine on my mac!?! That was way more surprising and disappointing that awful text entry.

Lol okay buddy. For all you know they are making a last minute adjustment to the update. Perhaps they are holding back for the weekend so that people get used to the new controller. Does it REALLY matter? Why are you so worked up about something so utterly inconsequential? You had to use an onscreen keyboard to log into Netflix once. BOO HOO. If it's such a terrible thing for you to bear, go buy a Roku and get on with your....life?

i am so digging the new apple tv The remote so simple and with HDMI-CEC it can control everything. As far as I"m concerned Apple has cracked the code of fixing TV.

I second this. They have made controlling other devices so simple. I can even control my AirPlay speaker volume via the Apple TV remote while watching a show and AirPlaying the audio to that speaker.

New Apple TV doesn't work with Remote iOS app - WTF!! Now I have to use stupid onscreen keyboard to enter App Store password etc

Why didn't Apple include Touch ID on the remote and also a dedicated gaming bundle with game controller?!

The remote is great and very easy to type usernames and passwords. Also typing those things when logging into a service should be a one time thing.

Why do you want Touch ID on the remote? I can only assume for purchases. But it is not possible since Touch ID is linked to the Secure Element in the processor on your phone for authorization etc. You build Touch ID into a remote without these hardware features and bypass it by sending data wirelessly to the Apple TV or your phone for authorization and your whole system of security can be compromised. Everything must be on the same device to be as secure as possible.

Apple of course could build the necessary hardware features into the remote but that would make the cost of the product increase, size increase and so on.

For some reason this is the best implementation of Siri Apple has come up with. I think it's a combination of:

- talking into the remote, with the button pushed down (not having to wait for Siri to decide you're done talking) feels natural
- Siri doesn't talk back to you, results just appear on the screen
- What you're watching isn't interrupted, it's turned down and shaded
- It's fast and hasn't mis-interpreted me once yet

The remote app doesn't work with Apple TV 4 and you can no longer pair a bluetooth keyboard !!

wtf Apple? Siri does not replace the keyboard, it's not even available in my favourite apps. I've been only using it one day and it's already driving me crazy.
