I partially agree, but not 100%

I haven't played with Siri too much, on any device, so not really sure about interacting with a machine through voice. Maybe the younger generation will totally love this. But as far as the tv experience, I like the apps. But I think we have a paradigm shift that needs to be looked at.

To your point, our experience is one of channel surfing (I go back to the experience of knob turning). In that paradigm, the idea of having to jump in and out of apps seems all wrong and I would totally agree. But the tv itself was just an app that grabbed content from different airwaves (later cable signals) and presented in a simple format. Hulu and Netflix are examples of pretty much the same thing and allows you to surf. Let's call them the aggregator.

If Siri or some other app can agregate accross the aggregators then we really have something. The experience is a little different in that instead of mindlessly wandering around you have to give some instructions related to genre or mood or actor or whatever.

Lets watch it mature over a couple of years and I think we might indeed have something that really does change things.

I think this whole thing suffers from the fact that meta data related to content is in general a hell of a mess. For a long time, it's been possible to tie proper meta data to web pages, again seemingly it failed... Metas are either absent, irrelevant or simply there simply as a marketing clickbait (dump of words only semi-related to the page).

There needs a standard that is strictly adhered/enforced for all content producers of any kind (apps, photos, whetever) for producing extensive standardized metadata. If such a thing actually existed, Google would be POINTLESS (it's almost pointless now because web pages are in general a hot mess of jumbled data).

There should also be a standard to mine, built metas from content itself (if the content is changing or is itself an aggregation of other pages), a meta data construction framework... being meta about meta... Oh my ;-). Well, if that's how it got to be :).

Meh. Look, most people know what show they want to watch and jump to HBO Go or whatever and find it fast.

Thanks for speaking for "most people." Actually, what I have wanted for a long time, and am very happy to have on the new ATV is universal search. And judging buy how fast they flew off the shelves this weekend I would say I am not alone.

When Apple gets their **** together and can integrate with all services and can eliminate the cable box, I'll be impressed.

It's not up to Apple to get their **** together. It's about the media producers being willing to give up the control they currently have, and accept less money. Case in point is MLB. Until the World Series started you couldn't watch any playoff baseball unless you had pay television. And even though MLB sells a baseball package during the regular season their deal(s) with local cable sports channels precludes me from watching my own home town team without a cable or satellite subscription.

Even if the future is no cable and all streaming, Apple doesn't even allow all services such as Amazon. So, it's always gonna be half baked.

Apple has already publicly stated that they welcome Amazon putting an app in the App store. If Amazon does not put Prime Video on the Apple TV it will be purely their decision. Same is true for Vudu, or anyone else.

Having read most comments I still don't know what to do.

Do I buy one or not? Million dollar question. Do I need one.? Almost certainly not. I can watch Netflix from my TV directly and it has plenty apps. I have a PS4 and whatever services are not available on the TV I can get on the Play station.

Do I want one? Yes, why? I don't know....

can Anybody help?

Wait. I'm like you and am getting the gadget itch, but if feels half-baked. My target for jumping onboard is if/when Siri works across my local content. If that comes with plex, great as that is my preferred app. But if it means importing all my stuff into iTunes or something else I'll do it.

I want to be able to say 'watch the next episode of blah' and it'll just do it. Otherwise I'll continue to use 'Xbox go to plex' and I'll pick something from the on deck section which is usually what I'm currently watching

You said it yourself. you don't need one. You have access to all the services you need. i think you are getting caught up in the "must have new apple device syndrome"

even if they let you sign up via the app, Amazon would likely pull a Youtube and charge you more so they get their whatever out of it

Pulling a Youtube.... You mean like where Youtube suddenly changed their format so that the AppleTV Gen1 and Gen2 players and others no longer worked with it and Apple took advantage of this by not updating the players and so all of us with Gen1 or Gen2 devices can no longer watch Youtube on AppleTV? Yeah, that created a lot of love with me for both Google and Apple. They both screwed me over.

Not sure what you are on about here. Meta data for Movies and TV shows are pretty well defined and there are many Apps that will help you to get and include the Metadata. Since we are talking apple TV here what else do we need?

WELL stated and totally agree. Without the Metadata, creating a good aggregation app is close to impossible. I suspect that Apple's Siri is limited to Netflix, Itunes and HBO for this very reason.

You just explained it in your response ... Apple wants a cut of what Amazon is selling so Amazon doesn't make the app. Apple is trying to make deals with cable companies, why doesn't Apple at least try to work with Amazon.

I imagine they will if they feel like it's worth it. Or Amazon will give in if they feel like they're really missing out on a market by not catering to Apple TV users (as they are already on iPhone for exactly that reason I'm sure). It will be interesting to see who caves first.

But Apple has fees for a reason, and Amazon just doesn't want to pay which is totally their right. That said, it's not really Apple's responsibility to bend over backwards to make the streaming content providers happy even though they have market incentive to do so, but it is the content provider's responsibility to make their content accessible on as many devices as possible since the customers are paying them for it. That's my take on it anyway.

Personally I think Apple needs Amazon on their platform more than Amazon needs to be on it. Any streaming platform needs the critical mass of major services - Netflix, Hulu etc. And IMO that includes Amazon prime video.

I don't thnk they should make exceptions just for Amazon, but I do think they need to look at their rev share model. Where services are providing similar content to Apple (I.e. iTunes rentals vs Amazon rentals), then the playing field should perhaps be levelled so that competitors are not at an unfair disadvantage.

It is a tricky situation though as Apple is being both platform provider and service competitor.

My ATV4 arrived today. Setup was a breeze. So far looks pretty slick. Really like the Apple Music interface. Tested out Siri a bit, seems very useful and quick. I don't understand what all the complaining is.

How can you hook up the Apple TV to a Mac Thunderbolt display. I have tried using Blackmagic Intensity Pro but cannot get audio, also have tried using Avermedia ExtremeCap without success.

No kidding. Horrible.

I agree with typing and touch Id but otherwise the remote app is obsolete now because if you airplay icloud content whatever it's music or film the Atv will play it directly from icloud. Not the iPhone /ipad. That is if you set your Atv airplay settings correct.

So do we have final word on whether "iTunes" includes searching our own (local) movies & TV shows? For instance, if a movie (not purchased from iTunes) is sitting on our local Mac's hard drive, is properly meta-tagged and is indexed by iTunes so :apple:TV can "see" it, will universal search and/or Siri find it when someone searches for that movie? Or is "iTunes" only stuff we can buy or rent or have purchased?

Not yet! I have a decent sized movie and TV library all tagged using metaZ. When I search all these TV shows and movies are completly overlooked, which is really annoying.

It's just iTunes content. I couldn't get my not purchased from iTunes content to pull up with Siri or search. Big disipointment. Makes Siri a lot less useful for me.

Ugh...deal breaker for me. Staying with my ATV2 until Apple provides better integration with local (not purchased from iTunes) content on my media hard drive. I mean how hard would it be for SIRI to look up based on the movie Title that pops up on the ATV ALREADY??? Hoping this is just a case of product feature "phase-in" (remember FCP X fiasco).

I'm not sure if you mean it some other way, but Siri is already on the Apple Watch, she just doesn't respond with voice feedback. You simply hold down the Digital Crown to access her, or raise your wrist to the watch face and say "Hey Siri," followed by your query.
I mean she's not nearly as accurate on the watch as she is on the TV. For me, personally.

Apple knows you didn't buy them from Apple so they ignore them. How do they know? Because if you bought them from Apple they'd be in your Cloud iTunes list based on prior purchases. Anything in iTunes that isn't also in the Cloud isn't from Apple so they figure they don't even need to LOOK at your "My Computer" section AT ALL and if I had to make a bet, I would say they NEVER WILL. They want you to buy ALL your media from iTunes PERIOD.

The days of Steve Jobs doing more "open" stuff like switching to Intel, using USB standards, PCI standards, etc. are OVER. Look at the Mac Pro and its video card connector. PURE BS. There's simply no excuse for it. Everyone else will use USB-C and Thunderbolt III. Apple will likely continue to use Mini-Display Port connectors and then make you buy adapters (those are high high-profit items for Apple at about 800% Profit each). They will not offer numeric keypads on keyboards anymore (strange that they don't swell one as an optional EXTRA, though; I figured they be right on top of that) and so I can't even consider Apple keyboards ever again. They're now using non-Sata connectors in the Macbook models. This means even if you can get to the drive, it will cost your a LOT more to upgrade/replace. They solder RAM so you can't upgrade it. They took a Mac Mini design that was reasonable to change drives and memory yourself (2012 Mac Mini models) and made it a waste of time AND got rid of the higher power CPU options to try and make you buy higher model Macs even though the Mac Pro is in an entirely different class of machine and the iMac forces an arbitrary monitor on you that you have to replace with every computer every single time.

I'm really not enjoying where Apple is heading. The Apple II was an open system. The Mac screwed all that to hell. Then it brought it back to sanity when Jobs came back and now it's being screwed to hell again. Apple goes custom when it benefits them. They go standards only when it benefits them. They dont' care if it benefits YOU. Apple seems to want to push some of us back to Windows World (we not only stand behind our windows, we stand on them!). In 2008, I couldn't stand Windows (Vista sucks!). But 7 (8 with classic shell) and 10 aren't so terrible (well 10 is terrible with the spyware/advertising, but that won't last with people whining loud enough; someone will solve it one way or another). Really, with Linux gaming starting to pick up thanks to Valve, it might very well be the future. People aren't always going to take getting fracked by companies forever, after all. The smart ones wise up and move on.

Computers shouldn't be a total rip-off in 2015. They should stand on their own merit. OS X isn't ahead like it used to be. It was worth putting up with some hardware choice limitations and higher prices when OS X kicked arse. Sadly, it and iOS are starting to play more catch-up than leading and hardware offerings from Apple are ABYSMAL lately (an all time low for value and power since the end of the PPC days). Thankfully, NVidia has provided their own drivers for their newer chipsets (which ironically only older Mac Pros can use) and that means you can build a Hackintosh and/or Windows 10 or Linux computer that kicks the arse of EVERY SINGLE MAC OUT THERE for $1200. If Apple wants my business in the future, they better start competing for it!

New Apple TV doesn't work with Remote iOS app - WTF!! Now I have to use stupid onscreen keyboard to enter App Store password etc

Why didn't Apple include Touch ID on the remote and also a dedicated gaming bundle with game controller?!

Dude. Relax. I agree that the remote app should work. Other than typing in a few things initially why would you need to? Just set it so you only enter the password once. Bundle? WFT. I ordered the steel series separately. Most people won't use a separate game controller as the new ATV remote works good as one for most games. Why did not not bother to think prior to making your post?

- I don't want my kids buying stuff without my permission. It's like going back 5 years without touch id or the remote app.

WTF kind of arrogant BS is that? Every point he made was valid. Maybe YOU should think before posting. o_O

Feedback is NOT work! No wonder kids like you want everything handed to them! How is a developer suppose to fix problems if no ever reports said problems?

BS it's not work. You're TESTING their product and telling them what's wrong with it. How is that NOT work? Worse yet, I've submitted a ton of testing and bug reports. They IGNORE most of them. It's not only work (for free as he said); it's a waste of time. Some people on these forums need to drink less Kool-Aid and wake up to reality. This thing is a joke. Get a FireTV if you need to install 3rd party software like Kodi or get a Roku if you don't. AppleTV is a joke at this point. It costs twice as much as its competition and they support 4K and more useful Apps (like an Amazon viewer).
