You realize your defending not having reasonable base RAM amounts by citing Apple's other products, on which they've also been screwing customers on RAM?

Apple has been screwing people on RAM for over a decade -- on purpose -- to overcharge the heck out of people for upgrades

That's the business model.... well, one of them I should say
I dunno man, I just went from 4GB in my 2012 Air to 8GB in my 2022 Air that I got last summer, I barely notice any difference (and definitely didn't need 8 for all those years either). :p

What data are you basing that off of?
No "data" aside from people that I see using iPad minis out there - family members, people using them for speaking in front of people at church and stuff. A lot of them wanted a small iPad, something they can throw in a bag easily and use on trips without a larger one getting in the way.

If you don't like the product, don't buy it. It gets tiresome seeing 39824098e+10 negative comments in every iPad mini thread because it doesn't hover in the air and wipe the users butt.

I'm sorry to have let you down

An iPad Mini "Bidet" does sound interesting, I will admit
The screen certainly looks like 💩, so it would make some sense

The iPad Mini I acquired was an older 'rounded' one (4?), not the new square one(6/7). The previous owner bought a new ipad Mini 6 last year and had me transfer the old stuff over to the new one (flat squared) and asked me to ewaste the old one. I cleared the old one out and passed it to my MIL. I now needed the new iPad 7 (not yet out/rumored)

My eyes are not what they used to be, and while I can zoom about with my iPhone, my iPad 12.9 is too big to hold for anything other than reading mags. The iPad will be used for surfing the net and the occasional game (mahjong) so it's big enough I don't need glasses, but small enough to not be bulky.

I'll probably pop over to the apple store this weekend and grab one up if they are around, or order one off amazon if not.

I think the mini is the only iPad form factor that matches is capabilities.

Love my iPad mini 5 and use it infinitely more than I ever used the pro. That said no reason to upgrade until it gets a 120hz display and gets rid of the jelly scrolling.

Old phone chip

Should have been standard 7 years ago

Fine - not great or forward looking, but fine

Passable

You have to buy a new Pencil if you had one with the nearly identical iPad Mini 6

An update that would have been pro-consumer, would be this same Mini 7 with a price cut at the base .. back to where iPad Mini 5's started -- or at least down to $449 ... and also knocking off the extreme gouging for GPS/Cellular

Still faster than comparable Android tablets and capable of running Final Cut Pro. The limits on the iPad lineup are mostly software, not processing power.

Most users didn't need 8GB in 2017.

Apple had to break compatibility with the Pencil 2 to simplify their lineup. Expect the next base iPad to drop Pencil 1 support and add Pencil Pro support. Pencil USB-C and Pencil Pro will be around for awhile.

$499 in 2024 is equivalent to $397 in 2018. (source usinflationcalculator.com)

This is my first iPad Mini, and so far it seems perfectly suited for what I wanted; a light reader that I can sketch on occasionally. I have a iPhone 15 ProMax, and while that’s good for reading, it’s not quite right for extended book reading. My iPad Pro M4 is great for doing most of my work, but sometimes I just want to sit and read with a smaller screen. This seems to fit the bill for me.

Basically it’s a Kindle that works with Apple Books and respects my privacy. And that’s what I wanted

They’d rather print money with repackaging old components (case and screen) with some mix of updated parts (also leftovers, but from phones)

Double the ram. Double the storage on the base model. Same price. I have no problem with a company making a profit, keeps them alive. I like the form factor so I bought the 7, easier than rationalizing why I don't.

I can’t believe with apples history of quality and their almost endless piles of money, they haven’t 100% sorted the jelly scroll issue.

Considering they are a “premium” brand, their addiction of cost cutting and bowing down to profit margins are detracting from what made them good in the first place.

Anyone claiming that "iPad Mini buyers don't want more features" needs to understand the chicken and the egg problem.

Apple has never made a Mini with specs more in line with a Pro device

It's pure speculation for anyone to claim there is no market there

But it's not speculation that while you don't think the memory and storage options of the Mini 6 was enough, literally millions of customers disagreed with their wallet.

Besides what's wrong with a little speculation in a conversation?

They are really skating by on this product simply by virtue of there being no viable alternative

I would change in a heartbeat to a different tablet in this size class if it had most any specs as long as the screen was good/great (better than Mini 6/7)

I am glad it’s gotten an update rather than die off

But I’m a little worried this could be the generation that makes them nix it due to ostensibly poor sales

Even though we scoff at 499 that’s peanuts for apple. They wanna move people up the ladder to be spending 829 as the cheaper alternative regular model to 999 iPad Pro oled 11 inch which hopped up from 799 before that on m1 and m2 led models

iPhone ify the iPad product line for making everyone cough up big time. The iPad mini may be on the chopping block for all we know if they aren’t willing to gamble on an oled mini for a lot more asking price fearing people won’t see the value being mini just like followed the way of mini iPhones

And they can keep regular iPad , the rotting corpse that is iPad 10 and it’s successors so undesirably behind in specs and inconveniences it will remain for corporate and education purposes only further pushing regular consumers up the pricing ladder

Not only apples greed but a product line they know a lot of people hold onto for a much longer cycle than iPhone sometimes easily in the ball park of 5-10 years

I think the Mini has some champions internally so I wouldn't worry too much. Apple also has embraced that people typically don't update every single refresh, so this one is targeted more at Mini 4/5 owners (or older holdouts!) who were waiting for a refresh.

I do wonder if it will see a more substantial update in the near future - the Mini refresh timeline is kind of all over the place. We had 1/2/3/4 in successive years (if the 3 can be called a refresh), then four years between the 4 and 5, then 2.5 years between the 5 and 6, and now 3 years on this one.

It may depend on whether this one is just using stockpiled A17 Pros that didn't pass muster for iPhone use, or if they plan to keep fabbing chips for a bit until they decide to push it to A19 or whatever.

Yeah you’re right. If there was a galaxy tab mini with 120hz at half the price selling like hot cakes I’m sure the mini 7 would be a different product.

The main draw of the iPad mini is the size. I think a lot of readers here have unrealistic expectations about the device. It is much better for content consumption than creation. Hence no Apple keyboard or Stage Manager support. Many are used in enterprise for point of sale or kiosk use. Hence no high end screen.
Exactly. The iPad mini is primarily a couch/bed companion. Maybe a travel companion as well as long as you’re aware of its limitations and you’re okay with them. Some businesses like restaurants make good use of it as well. Usually in kiosk or point of sale use, I usually see the regular iPad because it’s a little more affordable and larger.

What is the MacRumors conclusion and stance on the Jelly Scroll situation?

How am I not suprised that you have the first comment, and on this very subject. ;)

To respond to one of your later posts, the effect still doesn't bother me, but I 90% operate in Landscape and am usually editing photos or videos on mine.

I am really on the fence about this model. I wanted a few more items in this upgrade, and still strongly feel they should have a more pro (honestly hate their overuse of that term) model with OLED and a few other more advanced features.

Should really be called the iPad Mini 6s. It is not quite a new model to me.

Man, the commenters here really are in the wrong demographic of people for the iPad mini's audience. Most average people who want a smaller iPad don't care how new the chip is, how buttery the screen is with 60hz vs 120hz, or how much RAM is in there.

I respect it’s your opinion but how do you come to your conclusions of what the audience cares about?

It’s easy to understand. Apple looks at the ROI. They value ’good enough’ not ’get it right’. More emojis have more glam value than fixing that issue. Apple is gambling the consume will just upgrade if annoyed enough.
