How am I not suprised that you have the first comment, and on this very subject. ;)

To respond to one of your later posts, the effect still doesn't bother me, but I 90% operate in Landscape and am usually editing photos or videos on mine.

I am really on the fence about this model. I wanted a few more items in this upgrade, and still strongly feel they should have a more pro (honestly hate their overuse of that term) model with OLED and a few other more advanced features.

Should really be called the iPad Mini 6s. It is not quite a new model to me.
You’re the target audience then, using an iPad Mini in landscape for 90% of the time seems wild given the bloated resolution when viewed that way.

We have iPad mini 4 and 6. The 4 is limited to iOS 15 and it needs a new battery. So replacing it with a 7 was the best way to go. Also the 512gb storage (can never have too much). Otherwise it's identical to the 6, even the box is identical.

I've said it before on a different thread, but the fact that Apple has jilted the users on Apple Pencil compatibility twice now (once with the mini 6, which used only the Apple Pencil 2, and now with the mini 7, which is incompatible with the Apple Pencil 2 and requires the "Pencil Pro" or the Pencil 2 USB-C model) really sticks in my craw.

Those damned pencils aren't cheap. I'm certainly not going out of my way to "upgrade" and also shell out my head-earned cash for a new Pencil while I'm at it. Apple encourages users to engrave their names and little messages on their accessories, yet they don't do much at all to ensure forward compatibility of those accessories. It ends up all being e-waste.

Then again, the mini 7 is probably not targeted at existing mini 6 users. There aren't enough compelling features to warrant an upgrade from the mini 6 anyway, IMHO.

You know, the part about this product I had forgotten as I’m sitting here staring at my mini 5, is the aspect ratio change

As I’ve been mulling over trying out the 7 from Walmart with their long holiday return policy it just dawned on me…. I’m not gonna like how much shorter the screen is in landscape.

Ugh

The mini 7 screen is about 0.1" narrower and 0.5" taller in portrait than the mini 5.

The 2266-by-1488 vs 2048-by-1536 is more the issue

I tried the 6 vs my 5 in person and vastly preferred the aspect ratio and how it felt to read/interact with content on my 5

Just a much better experience in landscape for all but video content -- at least to me

Also, somewhat ironically, I watch a fair bit of old TV stuff from my Plex and that usually perfectly matches and gets the most out of the 4:3 on my Mini 5 with no black bars at all

I found the mini 6 screen 16:10 ratio(same dimension's as mini 7) makes reading DC or Marvel online comics easier. Its displays it fully, not that I need to scroll down on each page slightly with a mini 5 (4:3 ratio). It's the same with asian anime, manga content.

Why no stage manager when hooked up to external display?
Agreed. Enough power to run MacOS honestly. But not permitted.

Possibly. It is not because of the device, it is what I am doing with it. Editing video and mostly landscape photos in portrait mode would be nonsensical honestly.

Got my purple mini today! Minor updates but I still love it!

Also got a moko purple case on Amazon that matches my purple iPhone 14 Pro Max perfectly!

Regarding your Moko iPad Mini 7 case... is there anything you don't like about it?

How about your Mini 7? Anything you don't like about it?

Thanks!

Love the moko case. I like that it covers the edges unlike apples case.

Comes in every color. Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZRFCQ5S?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

I had the mini 6 as well so the 7 is just the same. I personally love the size. Had an iPad Pro when they first came out but it was too heavy and large for my liking. Nothing I can think of on the mini that I dislike!

@jchap

It's always just "pay up again" with Apple, isn't it?

Your point about e-waste is spot on also
This from the company that's busy telling us all their little "Eco-achievements" in each keynote infomercial
Indeed. As consumers, we do have a choice.

I was actually pleased for a time that I could use my Apple Pencil 2 with the iPad mini 6, iPad Air 4th gen and iPad Pro. What a great design choice by Apple, I thought.

Fast-forward just three years later, and none of the newest generation models of all of these iPad models will support that same Apple Pencil 2. Apple now sells a Pencil model that looks very much like the old one, but of course it's incompatible.

Well, Apple is not getting my money this year or any time soon for the minis, so this amounts to little more than complaining. I just feel like Apple's really acting foolishly and selfishly with all the changing-up of accessory compatibility. They are treating the accessories more like consumables than as valuable and useful tools and peripherals. Apple is also ignoring the fact that the users have paid a lot of money to purchase their expensive accessories. It's not like buying a wooden pencil or an ink pen, but they apparently are seeing if people will empty their wallets to buy them nonetheless. It's not even excusable with the proof-of-concept argument you could make for the Apple Vision Pro goggles. It's just... a waste.

I've experienced this with the mini 6 vs. the mini 5 as well. I just couldn't get comfortable with the mini 6's screen dimensions, even though in theory the slim bezels should have made it more optimal for viewing videos and other content. I ended up ditching the mini 6 and going back to the mini 5.

Nice. I have an ESR case on my mini 5 but they don't make a similar one for the mini 7. The Moko case looks closest. I ordered one and was hoping it would be good quality and a snug fit. Thanks for sharing that.

I upgraded form the mini 5 to the mini 7 and although I have not really used it yet, the mini 5 had the perfect aspect ratio for FAA approach plates (data sheets for instrument approaches to runways). I use my mini exclusively in aviation so hopefully the mini 7 feels ok with this.

The portrait mode on a mini 5 displays mechanical & engineering documentation better because it uses 4:3 aspect, but the mini 6 and 7 are now using 16:10 aspect ratio panels. Both the 11"/13" M2 iPad Air and M4 11"/13" iPad Pro models uses a 4:3 ratio
iPad Mini 5 - 7.9-inch – 2048 x 1536 resolution
iPad Mini 6/7 - 8.3-inch LED – 2266 x 1488 resolution
You can see it well described in this tablet article below:
Most tablets use the 16:10 aspect ratio that was common for early widescreen computer displays. This resolution makes them useful in landscape mode, especially for watching videos.
On the downside, the wide display can make the tablets top-heavy when used in portrait mode, which is often used for reading e-books.
The other aspect ratio used is the traditional 4:3, which sacrifices the wide display in landscape mode for a balanced tablet that is easier to use in portrait mode. Such displays aren't ideal for watching movies but are perfectly fine for reading.

That's what I'm seeing too.

Mostly it's an iPad Mini 6, just a bit better.
Which is all it needs to be. It’s too small for Pro usage. But Apple doesn’t want to go lower than the base price of the 11”‘iPad so they give the mini a few Air features and Air pricing.

I got my kid the 6, he broke it (ofcourse) 2 weeks after apple care finished.. and to fix it? $580 through apple or $550 from a 3rd party. Its $749 brand new.. to this day its still that expensive.. so annoying.

We ended up getting them a new ipad air.

To their credit, they’re doing more than most other companies on that front though.
Possibly.

I'd like to take a closer look at Apple's environmental scorecard, both the good and the bad. The impact of the hundreds of millions of devices they produce each year should already raise some questions as to whether they are producing, manufacturing and planning for the eventual disposal of all these products in a responsible manner.

Good video. Not much has changed since the previous version. But still a very good iPad mini
