Really with the stress of one's job, family, children, friends, the government, caffeinated drinks, alcohol etc., you think blue light is your problem with sleep?

What we think our problem is with sleep doesn't matter. It is what Apple wants to help us with - with what is under their direct control and something that we use - their hardware. Simple.

They are trying to eliminate one thing that could and does affect our sleep - that is light. And artificial light of the displays, at that. Why would you be so negative about a good thing that actually helps you so directly, yet so subtly? It is not as if they are letting users choose the hue they want to explore their creativity that one could construe this as a gimmick. This one is actually pretty good a feature to have.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4, seeded to developers this morning, introduces a major new feature: Night Shift for the Mac.

First introduced for iOS devices in iOS 9.3, Night Shift is designed to gradually shift the display of a device from a blue tint to a more yellow tint during the evening, cutting down on exposure to blue light. A quick overview of how Night Shift works on the Mac can be seen in the video below.

Night Shift can be toggled on and off using the new Night Shift switch located in the Today section of the Notification Center.

Preferences for Night Shift are available in the Displays section of System Preferences. In this section, users can schedule Night Shift to come on at sunset and turn off at sunrise or set a custom Night Shift schedule. There's also a manual toggle and an option to change the color temperature of the display.

Night Shift-style functionality has previously been available on Macs through the popular and well-known f.lux software, but it will be a built-in feature in macOS Sierra in 10.12.4, eliminating the need for a third-party app. F.lux continues to offer a bit more customization, however, with the option to turn it off on a per-app basis.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is only available to developers at the current time, but it should be made available to public beta testers in the near future. It will likely be beta tested for at least a month or two prior to release, so expect to see the update in March or April.

[doublepost=1485362937][/doublepost]Alas, this is only a half-way measure, reddening and darkening the screen. That helps, but only a little. A more complete solution would allow deveopers to create a totally different UI for night use. Instead of a dimmer, redder window, they might choose a black window with light characters.

I don't know if it's just me, but on my MacBook (Early 2016), when I plug in the charger and then open up the lid of the Mac, it shows a big giant green batter indicator in the middle of the screen showing the percentage and that it's charging, kinda like on the lock screen on iOS. Not sure if that's a new tweak or something along those lines.

I'm upset with apple for not letting f.lux in the app store because I have an iPhone 5C and Apple only enables night shift in 5S or newer.

But I guess they'd rather piss off their customers.

I am not sure why anyone wants this. I found it distracting and turned it off on my 9.7 iPad Pro. True tone is so much better since it is based on ambient light, and what apple should bring to MacOS.

This is about your signature, the price of $3500 for a MacBook 15 in Canada. That price, converted in Rupees, is the Indian equivalent for the top 15" stock model sold by Apple in India. Super pricey indeed.

I wonder what will happen to flux. I've used that for years.
They got their idea stolen by Apple, just like the many other ingenious utilities and apps - and fold.

Another innovative company whose ideas were flat out stolen. Takes courage, you know.

That clear it up?

I have a Late 2011 MacBook Pro with the developer build, but no Nightshift.

Does it only work on computers starting in a specify year? Thinking mine is too hold.

Thanks

The article kind of glosses over this. In short, blue light has been shown to affect our sleeping patterns. The more blue light you're exposed to, the later and worse your quality of sleep. It's become a bigger issue these days with so many people using phones and tablets before bed. Night Shift automatically reduces the blue light emitted from your device at a certain time of the night.

Interesting. I just switched on Night Shift on my iPad and it's not bad. I usually like a really bright screen but I do have sleeping problems so I'll give it a try. I can't stop myself checking my iPhone before bed.

Apple should highlight features like this on weekly email newsletters. There must be lots of useful features burried in the Settings menus. I only discovered yesterday that I could dictate text messages.
