They should include an option to include dark mode as a setting when night shift kicks in

You clearly don't understand the purpose of nigh shift mode... You want the backlight to be more yellow then the usual white, which does also penetrate the black you see on the screen as well.

As a graphic artist the last thing I want is my system deciding a random white point by itself.

But of course there are clear benefits for home users. On the iPhone 7 whether the screen is too blue or not, night shift can reduce the amount of light emitted even at the lowest brightness setting under regular "blue mode", which defo helps keeping my eyes exposed to minimum light before finally falling asleep.

Does this support the non-retina Macbook Pro? (mid-2012)
I'm guessing no as my early 2011 MBP 17" does not have this option in the beta.

Don't like Apple leaving perfectly good machines in the dust with simple features like this. Hate to say it but they really try hard to get people to buy new Macs if they want some newer features. And I get it, some require hardware not present, but what hardware does Nightshift require? If Flux can do it on my MBP why can't Apple?

Just can't afford a newer one right now.

Nice to see this finally added as a native setting. Quite hidden away in System Preferences though. If you prefer instant access to Night Shift features, I developed an app that offers a handy slider:

While I appreciate your work and your app appears well designed and I'm sure certain people would prefer your offering—for me NS is a set it (activate on sunset) and forget it feature.

Anyone know if they have they fixed the notifications dark mode? Currently it appear white no matter if you have dark mode selected or not.

It's 2017 and Apple is only now getting around to this.

Everything should always be done as soon as possible, but not any sooner.

How about just appreciating that somebody is constantly working on improving things and giving them to you for FREE?

I don't believe that is a bug. It's intentional. Maybe their thoughts are that the NC does not stay on the screen long enough to be a distraction. Whereas the dock and menu bar are.

I would rather have a mode that makes the UI elements dark, instead of yellow. I don't just mean the menu bar, but also the windows. A bright screen in a dark room can be painful. And if you ever work with images then having a yellow screen is the worst idea ever - even if you turn it off for Photoshop. Your eyes will have adjusted to the yellow and it will take a long time before you can see colors normally again. Until then, everything will look totally blue.

I've found that simply dimming the screen at night, avoiding working in a pitch black room, using a dark background picture and inverting white web pages with Cmd+Alt+Ctrl+8 is the best method for me. This way, your eyes' white balance won't get messed up.

Thing is - f.lux lets you really crank up the orange - to the point it will cause artifacting in the white parts of TV shows (like the light panels in Star Trek: TNG will show up as a freaky pink). This is why Night Shift on the iPad and iPhone won't go too too low - Apple still wants everything to look good.

So I imagine Night Shift on the Mac will be the same - it'll help, but maybe not to the extreme that f.lux goes. I imagine that'll be fine for most people, but I might stick with f.lux for a while longer.

That's actually a bug. See https://justgetflux.com/faq.html

The article kind of glosses over this. In short, blue light has been shown to affect our sleeping patterns. The more blue light you're exposed to, the later and worse your quality of sleep. It's become a bigger issue these days with so many people using phones and tablets before bed. Night Shift automatically reduces the blue light emitted from your device at a certain time of the night.

Really with the stress of one's job, family, children, friends, the government, caffeinated drinks, alcohol etc., you think blue light is your problem with sleep?

Apparently needlessly reminding people what year it is isn't yet old either.

It's 1984.

Well speak for yourself, we live idyllic lives.

Bit embarrassed to say I didn't know f.lux existed until reading through this thread. Excited to try it out.

This is stupid and more proof that Apple doesn't understand what Pro's need.

As a photographer, the last thing I need is some jackass changing the color response on my display.

Pro equipment and software needs to be different from consumer products and if Apple doesn't start properly supporting professionals with the appropriate hardware and software they will lose that business just as they lost video editing when they castrated Final Cut.

Speaking of which: why isn't Macrumors following up on the late 2016 MBP fiasco?

It's an optional feature. Obviously if you are touching up on photos, you'll turn it off. However, I find it useful on the iPad, and it's nice to see it available as an option on the Mac. The 2016 MacBook Pro supports a wider color gamut than any previous MacBook.

Couldn't agree more. Adding a blue filter to the overall display output render queue couldn't be such a high hardware problem. Typical ******* move !

Dear Apple,

Most people, at some point, will not be starting their 15th consecutive hour of work on their laptops and will eventually go to sleep for the night or simply go outside for a walk, at which point they can recharge their laptops.

I remember how cool it was to replace a G3 iMac with something totally cool and new, like my 2009 iMac. It looked different, totally new product. Now, 8 years later, why should I bother getting a new iMac, it's basically looks like the same Black/Silver one I own now that also has macOS Sierra (which looks the same since like OS X Tiger, more or less) running on it.

Thank God all your products are Linux compatible for when I get "obsoleted".
