What makes you think they are copying "from" Apple? Why not "from" the Essential phone? Just curious how you arrive at the conclusion.

I still wouldn't call Essential's a notch. Maybe a nook, a cranny. Either way, it's the same effect as all of the other android phones' notches. It only houses a camera and sensors. There's no extra security because of it.

I will say though, that good lord the Essential is a beautiful phone.

I hate the notch. It's 100% a branding exercise. At least some OEMs are allowing useres to black out the right and left "ear." "Added screen!" Really? You mean the time and signal strength? The amount of justification people use for this "notch trend" is hilarious. Can someone point me to a thread *before* the iPhone X was released where anyone wanted a notch? Anyone at all? Remember when the Moto 360 came out with the "flat tire" and everyone roasted it? Pot-kettle much? It comes down to people spending over $1k on a phone will obviously defend their purchase. This bezel less craze is putting form over function and the UI/UX suffers from it. Go into landscape mode in the iOS default mail app....that incongruent pile of crap is what notches cause.

Um, a flat tire is the opposite of a notch. The point of a notch is to reclaim bezel space for screen. The point of a flat tire is to save money by replacing screen space with a bezel.

I don’t get why they don’t just turn the display area around the notch black with white font on top. This way the notch will not stand out.

That's in the options if you want to.

One reason for me not to buy 95% of the android phones is the horrible security update regime almost all producers have. 2 years after model introduction (so if you buy a year old model it's just one year left) and the best of them stop supporting. Lots of them never give out any update.
Plus if there is an update it might take easily 6 months before it reaches your phone.

That's a big and long-time problem of Android and I wonder why the main players don't do something to fix this. Samsung goes up to almost a year before bringing the latest android to their devices, and that's for the flagship ones.

Luckily, this issue has its solution and it is called google pixel. But the rest manufacturers should really do something about that.

Most people, not all of us here on MacRumors, but most normal people do not care about a notch. They don't care about it with the Iphone X, and they won't care about it in any Android phone. We obsess, they just use.

That's such a stupid, stupid reply. I am aware of what website I'm on, it doesn't mean they can't provide quality reviews that put's the consumer first instead of just attacking competitor's products and calling it a review.
maybe you should calm down. what if the item actually sucks? how do you know your own biases aren't showing?
