why should upgrades be announced at the superbowl?
Quite simply because that is where the original Mac was announced 20 years ago.

I agree it would be weird to announce upgrades there, however Apple WILL be advertising there anyway with the Pepsi iTunes giveaway thing. Perhaps they may slip in that they have the fastest computer again - that would be something to shout about at a popular media event.

Kay, just a word of advice - try using some sort of smiley face or side remark when you're joking, being sarcastic, etc. Because they way you've typed the above post, it sounds like you're serious, and therefore the most gullible, naive person I think I've seen on these forums. ;)

Original G5 release date

Does anyone know the date the original G5's were released last year? (Not announced, actually released).

Well, I am a bit upset at so many changes in the release date of the G5's. Its not a matter of product supply, but more of price. The next G5 update will most definatly bring 3GHZ G5's. Dates have come and gone with prices that failed to meet expectations. This mess could all be avoided if the only place to buy a mac was on apples site or one of thier stores...but its a bit more complicated as we all know. The new line up will feature 4 models instead of the current 3. The top of the line(3GHZ) will be premium priced...so maybe those waiting could save a few extra bills for that new system. I would like to say sorry again for the fluctuations in release date but its not my fault...don't have that much power. *smiles* However you can all rejoice at the fact that 3GHZ G5's are coming. I am hopeful that negotiations will end on a positive note (besides the inevitable loss of jobs...) and we will see the release this week. Cheers

Hey NeatGekko - how was your hand? Did you enjoy eating it like you swore you would if your 3 GHz G5 claims were proved false, as they were?

It's easy to make predictions when you know the prediction is eventually going to happen. I might as well start making "predictions" that G5 iMacs are coming out very soon. Just wait, they will be out soon, and when they do come out, I'll take all the credit for predicting their release ahead of time. :p

Tough to say - technically Virginia Tech received the first batch of G5s that were released, didn't they? Or were those just the 2.0 GHz models - were the 1.6 and 1.8 models still released prior to those? In any case, it was sometime in September, was it not? Could be wrong....

Cool to have you back, and I hope the chewing your hand off bit went OK, so, now, got any hints for us about for the second coming of Christ? Just a date, thats all we need :)

Thanks for that - I have managed to find this though:

G5 order date: 6/23 at 2:22pm EST. Estimated ship date: On or before 9/22

Source: http://www.studio2f.com/archives/000225.php

And even a picture of the G5's being ordered by Virginia Tech's purchasing lady!

Very cool - and good to know.

I still wonder what the guys on the other end of the Apple Store were thinking when they saw that online order get put through. "Update subtotal... $5.2M... Add to Shopping Cart... Anything Else For You?"

Heh - I think it might have been something like this:

*crossed fingers* We'll be ok so long as noone orders the Dual 2Ghz... We'll be ok so long as noone orders the Dual 2Ghz... We'll be ok so long as noone orders the Dual 2Ghz... We'll be ok so long as noone orders the Dual 2Ghz...

DOH!

Okay, guys, let's cut NeatGecko some slack. I was one of those who hammered him the hardest before MWSF, but his prediction on the iPod mini was essentially accurate, so I (and quite a few others) have been eating a bit of well-done crow, too.

Gotta admit, though -- his arrogant way of expressing himself irritates the heck out of me.

That was cutting him some slack, should have seen what I wanted to type.

Well, lets see if his 3.0ghz prediction comes thru any time soon, I'll give him his props then, along with the rest of us.

But will he eat the other hand if it doesn't? :p

<SARCASM>

Why should we ? After all this is a *rumor* forum and we are meant to be mean. :D

Anyone who has followed the rumor mills closely at MacRumors in the last month or so knows that NeatGekko is legit. His iPod Mini predictions were thoroughly accurate.

You can bank on what he says. Admittedly, 3 GHz G5's is an easy prediction to pull out of the air, but predicting four models is at least a little bit juicier and will surely come true, considering the source.

(I mocked him before and ate my words. Not gonna make that mistake twice. :) )

Heh heh. Well, he's already having to type with one hand. If he eats the other, either he'll have to type with his tongue or we'll have to survive somehow without his *smiles*. :)

Here's hoping he's right.

3, 3, 30

I hope we get the dual 3GHz.. but more over, I hope we have a 30" display to go with it! :D

At this rate.. a GHz a year.. not bad. What's the pentium topped out at now?

As for Neatgekko, his predictions vary. It may be possible for the price to fluctuate, but he also claimed it'd be a 4.5GB ipod mini. He also raved about how impressive looking they were.. which I think was an inaccuracy.

Poor NeatGekko

I need at least one hand to type. '*smiles*'

I was told 4gig...for that to be true...it would have had to be larger than 4 gig in actual capacity. So I threw out 4.5gig. Really I didn't know if 4gig was formated or unformated. Bad guess sorry... We know now that the mini ipods are actually about 3.7 gigs. I didn't think so many people would break out the magnifying glass on me. Just thought everyone would like a heads up. Oh well

The new ipods you have to FEEL. You have to hold them because they are so light and the scroll wheel is what makes them amazing...its really great. Personal opinion...they could have made them shorter...but once again..nothing is perfect.

As far as my G5 'prediction' you can take it or leave it... beause I know that if I didn't know, I would want to. *smiles* So there you go. Cheers

There already ARE four models - 1.6, 1.8, Dual 1.8, Dual 2.0. A speed bump would be consistent.

Jobs himself said the 3Ghz models will be out this year, however he mentioned july if memory serves.

If they were to come out early this week however, then that would be great.

3ghz today would be an Apple coup - show that they are back and serious about having 'The World's fastest, most powerful, personal computer'.

In the UK they took a bit of stick about the Jeff Goldbloom ad (it was banned) so a sort of 'well, up yours, PC boys' (it was them that complained about the ad ;) ) would be kind of cool on the 20th Anniversary (well - what's a few days between friends...)

'Fraid not. While you may be able to find remaining stocks of single 1.8's at the various resellers, Apple's G5 lineup includes only 3 models: 1.6, dual 1.8 and dual 2.0. The single 1.8 was replaced by the dual when it was announced. Check the Apple store, dude!

Jobs didn't specify July or any other month. He said "within 12 months".

The one thing you got right was that it would be great if 3ghz arrived this week. :)

You better tell the Taiwan store then http://www.apple.com.tw/store/powermac.html

Actually he said in 2003 "We've committed before the end of next summer" and I don't know where you are located, but here in the UK Summer is June / July (although we hide it well).

...that would be the third thing I got right. :D

You live in the U.K., and you're dredging up a Taiwan store to support your point? Please!

Instead of a MacCentral summary, how about straight from SJ's lips:
WWDC 2003 Keynote 6-23-03

Jump to 1:52:00. He says it, and it's up on the big screen. "Within 12 months". I'm sure you'll forgive me for believing SJ before you.

...that would be the third thing I got right. :D

I'll be generous and give you one and a half. :)

It's irrelevant - Apple are selling single CPU 1.8Ghz machines.

It's not me you are not believing, it's the MacWorld summary. So the words he said on 23/6/03 were "Within 12 months", which, if we count 12 months is... *drumroll* June 04. So regardless of the words that left his mouth, he *said* before the end of June 04. It means the same thing.

I'll be generous and give you one and a half. :)
I still claim my 3 points :D

Sorry, bub -- you can't change your argument mid-stream, and the drumrolls don't help a bit. You originally said "[Jobs] mentioned July, if memory serves." I argued that "Jobs didn't specify July or any other month," which is true. (What do you think "specify" means, anyway?) And you've just confirmed that your memory didn't serve. It's June, not July.

And I still say your Taiwan reference is excruciatingly lame. But I'll bump you to 2 points for creativity. :)

To all those monitoring this asinine debate: Yes, you're right -- Skinifitz and I are both obsessive geekizoids.
