Okay this one really pisses me off. I love 3D touch and it was worth every penny upgrading to my 6s back in the day just to get it. I thought removing it from the Xr was just cost-cutting for the cheaper model, but this is now my primary hindrance for upgrading from my Xs to the 11 Pro. I hate feeling like my only options are staying behind or buying a $1000 compromise.

Haptic Touch should be called Spastic Touch, i much rather have a thicker phone with 3D touch than this stupid haptic touch thing, make the phone feel laggy, it's annoying, make you accidentally trigger it while browsing the web, if you just rest the finger on the screen getting ready to scroll, and when you actually need to trigger you need to wait... its such a stupid idea. This is the kid of **** it would never have passed Steve Jobs approval...

And then they called they event: "By Innovation Only" ... hahah WTF???? what did they innovate this year??? Put a 3rd camera on the phone and removed features from it...

3D touch is still there above the settings for Haptic Touch on my XS Max, so it can still be used, but it's just ”one level” and does the same way as a ”long touch” (i.e. Haptic Touch).

By the way, does anyone notice any difference between the ”Fast” and ”Slow” touch duration settings? Seems about the same to me...

Edit:
Okay, there is a slight difference but I think it's hard to tell there on the test image. More noticeable for me for icons on the home screen (for example) for some reason.

Edit 2:
One problem I see with Haptic Touch is that it relatively easy can be accidentally activated on an item (happens to me quite often for links on pages in Safari for example). Not so with 3D Touch. While there is an option to disable 3D Touch I see no way of disabling Haptic Touch and using only 3D Touch for those of us that has a device that supports it. Too bad…

Possible that the app the photo was in did not pick up on the settings change. Maybe try to restart the app so that it re-loads the settings from the system?

„Haptic touch is slower...“ No. 1 reason why 3D is superior to me. Especially for special cases on the keyboard. Didn’t really use 3D Touch on other occasions, but on my XR the haptic touch poping up all the time where I’m not quick enough to release my finger really is annoying

doesn’t the article miss an important fact why Apple got rid of 3D Touch?
It’s much more expansive!!!!

Cost may have been a factor, but it required a physical detection of the press, and I believe this was much more complicated to achieve reliably on larger screens (iPads) and OLED screens. Plus, it can't be good for the screens to be pressed hard. Haptic Touch only requires a long press, not a hard press like 3D Touch did.

Haptic Touch can also work on smaller screens like the Watch, which may not have supported 3D Touch properly either.

So while Haptic Touch sacrificed one capability, it gave users a much more consistent interface across all devices.

Wouldn't surprise me if they kill 3D touch on the watch next

The Watch has Force Touch (different from 3D and Haptic touch, yes confusing!), but Force Touch is actually just like Haptic Touch in that it does not have multiple levels of sensing, only one. Only 3D Touch supported different levels (soft and hard). So it doesn't matter if they replace Force Touch with Haptic Touch, the experience would be virtually identical.

That said, the Watch 5 does have Force Touch, so they kept it.

From the specs...
  • LTPO OLED Always-On Retina display with Force Touch

Watch must be able to detect multiple levels of pressure as I can make the clock face bounce in and out the harder and gentler I push on the screen.

And I can even hold the animation halfway to activating.

EDIT: This is on the S5 and worked the same on all previous generations.

the macrumors article is either very dumbly written, or, cleverly written.

in the article there is no mention that in the Accessibility menu that is pointed out, on devices that actually can do 3D touch there is an additional setting that still access 3D touch, yes, actually does still continue to access a deep push feature.

this is on iOS 13.1.2

I’m huge fan of Haptic Touch, only because it brought back some functionality I lost with 3D Touch moving from a 7 Plus to my XR, but let’s not kid ourselves-it is not as good as 3D Touch. The problem, however, is Haptic Touch is good enough to replace 3D Touch 95%+ of the time and that was good enough for Apple. Plus, there is consistency in manufacturing i.e. cost, and I wonder if Apple also abandoned 3D Touch to peruse a coming screen tech that may have been difficult to integrate with 3D Touch. The loss of 3D Touch does have one major benefit in increased battery size.

Not sure I understand this comment. 3D Touch on devices that have 3D Touch hasn't been disabled or turned off by default, so of course it's still available. The portion about the Accessibility menu is for devices with Haptic Touch, not 3D Touch.

3D Touch is still intact and hasn't turned into Haptic Touch on 3D Touch devices, but Apple has changed the 3D Touch gestures that can be performed and mirrored what can be done with Haptic Touch.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm constantly inadvertantly selecting text or links with this haptic garbage. If your finger just barely hovers over the screen this happens unintentionally all the time. It would be nice if they'd kill off 3D entirely and embrace haptic alone, rather than try to Frankenstein the two of them together poorly.

And this is why I dislike iOS 13's version of 3D Touch. I'm glad they kept it there but there isn't a toggle to turn off Haptic Touch and they messed up a few if the gestures I used daily (mainly peek and pop).

3D Touch as a concept is excellent. A second layer of interactivity under the first invoked by pressure. Very innovative, intuitive and Apple-like. The fail in this case appears to be two fold. First, reports suggest that implementing it on a large screen isn’t possible at this time. Second, and more importantly, the software implementation left a lot to be desired. Apple didn’t solidify a set of use cases for it before they rolled it out.

So while the article suggests that this is the end of the road for 3D Touch, I wouldn’t be so sure. Should the technology evolve to the point that it can work on large screens I see no reason why Apple wouldn’t take another bite at it. As I said, the concept is solid.

I bought the iPhone 11 Pro Max ... and I absolutely hate Haptic touch. 3D Touch was useful and it made sense. It made no sense to remove something that has usefulness.

One example is how distorted the long press feels now to gain access to the keyboard cursor. They even had to limit the thing to the spacebar to activate and scrolling left to right sucks.

The other is in order to delete an app you must first "Rearrange" them in a submenu. :\
Agreed and agreed. Especially for the keyboard cursor. Huge loss, imo.

Funny the way it is how when 3D Touch was around, people were asking “why does this exist?”. Now that it’s gone, people are asking “why did they take it away?”
It could be two separate groups of people saying these things.

I personally never liked 3D Touch and had it disabled on my 6s Plus when I had it, but there are plenty of people on the forum that like 3D Touch and I am sure they are missing it.
