Really? 3D Touch on my XS running iOS 13 betas was never as good as it was with iOS 12.

BS. It was way better than long press.

I fully agree that 3D Touch is much different in iOS 13 vs. iOS 12. What it can do has been changed so it better lines up with Haptic Touch. It's still 3D Touch though and it feels different from Haptic Touch. Haptic Touch is a lot slower, IMO. I did have 3D Touch set to fast and much prefer being able to activate it quickly.

Would you pay $100 extra for 3d touch? The iPhone 6s (with 3d touch) was $100 more than the iPhone 6 (without 3dtouch).
The $100 difference had nothing to do with 3D Touch, Apple was simply offering a lower generation iPhone for $100 less. The same thing is happening now with the XR being offered for $100 less than the 11 even though neither one has 3D Touch.

3D Touch was not the only difference between the 6 and 6s, BTW. 6s had more RAM, faster storage, faster processor, second-generation Touch ID, more durable aluminum. IMO worth the extra $100 even before we get to 3D Touch.

3D touch is still there above the settings for Haptic Touch on my XS Max, so it can still be used, but it's just ”one level” and does the same way as a ”long touch” (i.e. Haptic Touch).

By the way, does anyone notice any difference between the ”Fast” and ”Slow” touch duration settings? Seems about the same to me...

Edit:
Okay, there is a slight difference but I think it's hard to tell there on the test image. More noticeable for me for icons on the home screen (for example) for some reason.

Edit 2:
One problem I see with Haptic Touch is that it relatively easy can be accidentally activated on an item (happens to me quite often for links on pages in Safari for example). Not so with 3D Touch. While there is an option to disable 3D Touch I see no way of disabling Haptic Touch and using only 3D Touch for those of us that has a device that supports it. Too bad…

Did iOs 13 move all phones that had 3d touch to haptic? I've been noticing 3d touch has been really buggy on my X is it that it's using haptic now as default?

Considering the latest phones cost even more and all that without 3D Touch, seems like that's a fairly moot point.

3D Touch is great. It's an impressive piece of tech they developed that's under appreciated and on my 6S it still works flawlessly. I'm still impressed with this tech to this day. Sad to see it go. It is more technically difficult to implement on the iPad though, so a simple long press will bring consistency and it's cheaper too.

It's still there, along with Haptic Touch that has been added on as well. Some previously existing functions of 3D Touch have been removed, while others have been modified in one way or another.

So glad they got rid of that POS 3D Touch or whatever nonsense. Created by jony Ives and since he’s been fired, that feature went too and good riddance! Smashing your display isn’t my cup of tea. Haptic touch all the way for me.

3D Touch really caused you to smash your display? o_O

Interesting way to justify your iPhone 11 Pro purchase. Who are you trying to convince, us or yourself? ;)

Funny the way it is how when 3D Touch was around, people were asking “why does this exist?”. Now that it’s gone, people are asking “why did they take it away?”

I know... I remember so many saying it’s worthless, stupid, will never be used, a gimmick, can’t innovate my ass, who asked for that, and on and on.

Some love to moan-n-whine about anything Apple.

Not sure what the default setting is, but I had 3D touch enabled after upgrading to iOS 13 from iOS 12, which means both 3D touch and Haptic Touch is working in tandem. But now in iOS 13, it seems 3D Touch only works as a different way of triggering Haptic Touch, so no deep press or anything – only one step.

And like I said it seems you can only disable 3D Touch and not keep that on and disable Haptic Touch instead. Would be nice I think, since I sometimes accidentally trigger Haptic Touch on things.

Take a look at Settings > Accessibility >Touch and see how you have things set up there on your device.

I was a heavy 3D Touch user, I was worried coming from XS Max to the 11 Pro. But honestly I’ve gotten used to Haptic Touch fairly quickly and I don’t overly miss 3D Touch. I’ve found it a similar experience.

Plain and simple, 3D Touch was an additional method of input that allowed users greater functionality when interacting with their phones. The craziest thing to me is that everyone is only talking about moving the cursor around, but the 3D Touch trackpad feature encompassed WAY MORE than just moving the cursor around. You could press into multiple levels in the trackpad mode to quickly select words, sentences, and whole paragraphs. Press even a fourth time to deselect—all without removing your finger from the screen once. It was ridiculously powerful for typing on the iPhone—gone were the days of having to drag your fingers over the blue text selection handles. But now we’re back to that clumsy method of text selection, since Haptic Touch only moves the cursor around. The Haptic Touch keyboard is slow, cumbersome, and literally, since it’s just a glorified long press, blatantly less efficient because it takes time to execute.

And don’t even get me STARTED on how absolutely ridiculous Haptic Touch is on the Japanese keyboard, since the space bar is all the way to the right side of the screen—you’re already all the way to the right, so you have no where to go once it‘s in cursor mode! It’s almost a joke that they actually included the feature at all!

3D Touch was ideal for artists as it enabled us greater dynamic expression when playing digital instruments on apps like GarageBand, or when drawing with apps like Procreate Pocket, where the pressure sensitivity made drawing more real with the opacity and width of strokes changing with how hard you pressed on the screen.

I honestly don’t know how there is any question as to the usefulness or practicality of 3D Touch, or how there is any contest between it and Haptic Touch. There is no argument. 3D Touch should NEVER have been nixed, and its loss is just one aspect—a huge one, mind you—that makes this year’s iPhone series a downgrade from the last.

To the extent it was a "fringe" feature is only the fault of Apple. It was a huge keynote feature for the iPhone 6s—the next step past multi-touch.

It would have been so easy to give 3D touch items a visual indicator. And even if not, how many people using Macs use all of the esoteric keyboard shortcuts? They're still useful. Outside of people reading Macrumors, I doubt many people launch an app by typing command space, the first letters of the app and then return. But it's still nice for the people who do.

I don't buy the thing about parity with the iPad, either. The iPad has Apple Pencil support. The iPhone does not. Apple always used to say they wouldn't hold one product back to prevent it from cannibalizing another. And the iPad even has its "own OS" now.
I don’t buy the iPad reasoning either. They even renamed the OS specifically for iPad. They’re not supposed to be the same. I think it’s because Apple cheaped out on the cheaper phones by not including 3D Touch, which fragmented the feature past the 6s. I don’t know why they thought that was a good idea since of course more people will buy the cheaper phone! That means less phones in the Wild that have 3D Touch...

Something the article leaves out: The best part of moving the cursor with 3D touch... selecting words! It wasn't just about moving the cursor, but pressing deeper as you hover over words to highlight them.

exactly!!!! That is something I will miss when I have to upgrade... until then I will use my 8 😂

Yeah, with the iPhone SE it kind of made sense because they were using an old chassis and the old physical Touch ID button, etc, but with the brand new iPhone XR it seemed very conspicuously odd. I say it's never too late to make up for mistakes. I think we should petition Apple to bring it back. I've written on apple.com/feedback about it already.

I bought the iPhone 11 Pro Max ... and I absolutely hate Haptic touch. 3D Touch was useful and it made sense. It made no sense to remove something that has usefulness.

One example is how distorted the long press feels now to gain access to the keyboard cursor. They even had to limit the thing to the spacebar to activate and scrolling left to right sucks.

The other is in order to delete an app you must first "Rearrange" them in a submenu. :\

I just found out you can delete and rearrange a different by accident. Hold down and as soon as you feel it click or whatever move the icon.

I’m glad it and the headphone jack have gone.
Both pointless antiques that deserve to be in the bin.

I’m now a week in to my 11 Pro after trading in my XS via iUP. I just got home from work and finally had a few minutes to myself and had hopped over to MR to inquire about this exact topic.
Thanks for the A/B!

Turns out, I miss 3-D Touch. It’s way more A) responsive, B) liquid and C) versatile. While not a deal breaker, it is kind of lame it’s gone. Oh well, things change. And apparently I’m now more pro.
