They just broke the cycle by releasing what is essentially the 6ss (i.e. A phone with virtually the same exterior design but with spec bumps). I don't think they'll do it again by releasing the 6sss (i.e. 7s) in 2017. I think the stage is set for a major design overhaul for 2017.

We need an overhaul and I hope the logic you've stated is correct. You're right though, it does feel like a 6ss.

This update to be perfectly honest doesnt even deserve to be called an S update.A better camera and no antenna, home button is the best they could come up with?Disappointing.Especially when Android companies are betting on VR,Wireless charging,OLED displays,Dertachable modules in the LG G5 etc

The display is still bad as usual.750P display in 2016?You are kidding me Apple.Your closest competitor is on 2K resolution. You should feel ashamed but considering Tim's involved, prolly not

Screen, front back camera, CPU, chipset, home button. This is not an "ss " update.

I guess every version is an update of the previous so the question is - when does a brand new one kick in? One that can be considered an overhaul?

has the traditional button

This made me think about the iPhone 7 for a second. You know all those times you pull the phone out of your pocket accidentally hitting Siri in the process, surely I'm not the only one, having the pressure sensitive soft button could make this worse or fix the issue completely.

Random thought I know, just trying to think about all the things that may go right or wrong with it. Phil got me with the phrase, "all those people that got the iUP last year get the new phone this year so you should too". Darn it, I know it's a trap to sell more of these things but it was a classic Steve Jobs reality distortion. So I may jump on the bandwagon.

It's not like I wasn't already tempted with the "telescopic" lens on a mobile phone, adding water resistance, the quad core processor, the jet black color, the fancy videos (especially the one with Jony Ive saying "aluminum"), the tad increase of battery life, and the stereo speakers.

For once Apple actually impressed in my opinion. I haven't been this excited for a new iPhone since the 5.

Stereo speakers was another positive upgrade. But I'm never going to upgrade because of it. Just don't think there's enough there currently. The correlation with processor power and software is another thing that should be considered. Feels like most smart phones are super fast and are more than comfortable with handling the OS for 2 years and or so (until something gets nerfed). Is enough going to happen in the next year to make the 7 pivotal to own over a 6s or 6s+ in terms of apps and OS? I doubt it. I'm just rationalising here to be honest, it's always personal perspective - everyone has different criteria for justifying a purchase.

All of the things you mention are the types of "feature only" or "spec bump" updates that have been the definition of an "s" upgrade (until now that is). Non "s" upgrades have been accompanied by a new exterior design (i.e. Think iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6).

IPhone 7 does not fit this pattern. The cycle has been broken. Hence, the 6ss moniker fits!

From what I heard on the plus mode it's f/1.8. I too am a photographer, and the camera I happe to have with me in my pocket beats the hell out of my DSLRs I left at home.
Yes, this line has been so overly abused it's not even funny. While true for capturing spontaneous snaps, a serious photographer plans a shoot and brings real equipment.

It's not the association I make. This is a new phone, new model. Ymmv as always.

That's the question right?

This is true.......

The telephoto lens is f2.8? Not that impressive. And I'll have to wait a few months for their bokeh generator to work? That should have been ready for today's event.
PASS
f/2.8 isn't bad. The bokeh (not fake bokeh) will look way more blurry despite the smaller aperture on the telephoto simply because of the longer focal length. I've always been wanting a longer focal length on a phone. I'm really not a fan of the standard focal length, it's too wide for my taste.

You're the one that claimed it wasn't an "ss" upgrade, so you must be making an association that it's a typical non "s" upgrade. It's hard to argue with historical facts though. Not saying the iPhone 7 is not a great phone, just that it fits the pattern of previous "s" upgrades in that it's a "feature only/spec bump" type of upgrade. I can't imagine a scenario where Apple will keep this same basic design for 4 straight iterations (i.e. Carrying it forward for an iPhone 7s). I think the groundwork has been laid for a major redesign in 2017.

Every model is a spec bump from the previous model. Your only criteria is changing the form factor. Everything changed except the form factor which is why to me it's more than a spec bump.

You're entitled to your own opinions....but not your own facts. Again, what you describe is the definition of an "s" type upgrade. Using your own words: "Everything changed except the form factor". This defines all past "s" updates.

Not trying to bash the iPhone 7. I might very well upgrade to it from my 6+. But if I do, I don't expect the current "exterior" design of the 6, 6s and 7 to last for more than a year.

This breaks the mold. Apple has broken its own strategy. And the next phone will probably have the exact same exterior dimensions.

For the first time ever I'm _not_ buying my yearly iPhone.

In fact I'm looking forward to continuing on with my iPhone 6S Plus and not having to setup a new phone.

The lack of a headphone jack killed any enthusiasm I have for upgrading. That and the fact that nothing else about the phone is compelling.

I love how you conveniently leave out waterproofing, stereo speakers, bigger capacity base model and bigger battery. All updates that otherwise would make android fans spew liquid from their private parts.

It's not hard to justify for me, I actually think it is a pretty nice upgrade. Either way I get the new phone every year and sell my old one and this year is no different.
