I use a hardshell only when I am going to have the MBP in a rougher environment. Its just a thing I do to make me feel better about bringing it with me on longer journeys. Other than that it goes naked. I have had mine since August still looks brand new.

In terms of hardshells meaning more heat, I have only noticed a 1 or 2 degree change with hardshell on vs hardshell off. However I have noticed that with the hardshell on, it does make the laptop feel a lot heavier than it would have with out the shell.

I like everything that's pretty, naked. MacBook Pro and my iPhone among other things

nothings better then the birthday suit, it will get scratched eventually - there is no getting around it. It's like when I got my first iPod (video) and i took such good care of it but then after a while it didnt even matter. I know a MBP is way out of the ballpark of an iPod but same idea, just be real careful with it and you'll be fine.
