Where is everyone getting these prices from? On eBay unlocked 256 gb iPhone X are going for $700-750. After eBay fees you’re left with $650. Maybe Craigslist is a little bit better but I doubt it because buyers could just purchase from eBay instead.

A new 256 gb xs costs $1,149 plus tax plus upgrade fee.

According to my quick math, an upgrade costs at least $600.

My numbers were hypothetical. They also account for best case scenario. In any case, my point is still valid. True cost of ownership is the difference you end up paying whether it be $300 or $600 and not the $1200 of a brand new phone.

Now You know and I know and Apple knows that unless they come up with something new and different the sales aren’t there
The proof is that Apple stated that they will no longer provide how many iPhones were sold each quarter
Hopefully that foldable iPhone will be coming soon

Doubtful. Even if it does, do you realize the price tag that will acquire along side new technology like that? You can guarantee it will be well priced above the current iPhone XS. But the real shift is _not_ a foldable iPhone, it’s Micro-LED, revamped battery technology, and augmented reality, that’s where the focus is going to be for the future for the iPhone.

Ive had every iPhone since the 3g upgrading every two years till the 6+ then got put on the yearly plan and I've had the X for a year(just returned my Xs max).
Seems like With everyone I know upgrading seems completely different then it did a few years ago. Most of my friends have 1-4 year old phones usually. plenty of 7 and 6s people I know still not caring to upgrade. Same with androids not many people have the latest and greatest.
Who else thinks that the rise of phone prices has gone up just because of this reason? Less upgrading means higher prices phones to keep manufactures happy but it definitely feels like less and less people are caring to have the latest phones because phones. Phones have gotten so good that most people dont feel a huge upgrade year after year anymore. Its not like 2010 anymore and things loaded slow, apps took a few seconds to open ect... The 3g was pretty bad. Using safari was horrible most things would crack and things just wouldn't work or very slowly. What will manufacturers come up with to keep people upgrading every year or two? Technology has definitely tapered off.

I was perfectly happy with the iPhone X and wouldn’t have upgraded if not for the larger display of the iPhone X’s max. Really happy I did, I’m loving the Xs Max’s display and better battery life compared to the x.

There defiantly seems to be a trend over with android oems losing sales this year, but doesn’t seem to have affected the iPhone or its users, maybe next year....or maybe not.

Us techies upgrade much more often then the average public. I didnt see another X in public for over 6 months. Seemed like nobody bought them to me last year. I see them more now but still haven't seen an XS max in public. Sure its only been a month but just saying the average public doesnt upgrade like tech enthusiast.

True, but I believe the hesitation last year was due to three factors:
uncertainty regarding Face ID
initial sticker shock regarding the 999 price
No large display model.

True but the average public usually upgrades their phones with carrier plans and subsidies and as you may remember the x launched last year on or around November 3 so expect those with an annual upgrade contract to start upgrading within the next few weeks. Not to forget that the thanksgiving and the Christmas period are both right around the corner,

Also worth mentioning, this year a lot of android oems decided to increase prices to keep up with the Xs and Xs max and it may influence consumer decision.

Anecdotally speaking, I have a friend who just purchased the iPhone Xs two days ago. She wanted the black one with the highest capacity, but wasn’t willing or unable to explain why.

Her reasons for upgrading Animoji, I’m not kidding I’m being serious.
She purchased an unlocked black 512gb iPhone Xs just for Animoji. She is coming from a iPhone 7 or 8, she calls it the one with the button at the front, god bless her. She wanted help to switch phones but didn’t want to user her computer so she upgraded her iCloud account to 200 gb and did an iCloud backup then restored her phone through iCloud. She is getting use to the gestures but loves Face ID.

Bear in mind in March she was swearing up and down that she would never get rid of her iPhone 7 or 8 because she loved the fingerprint button on the front and didn’t want to try or get used to a new “system”, Face ID.

What on earth is Animoji anyway? It sounds like something that no one over the age of 13 should be using, and certainly should not be a reason to upgrade and shell out a grand!

She is actually 29 and an established equestrian owning her own stables and breeding her own horses. Different people different priorities.

I live in DC and I see tons of iPhone X’s and XS, but haven’t seen one XS Max nor XR yet except at the Apple Store and Best Buy. If I could I would have upgraded to the XS Max for the screen size and better camera. Right now I have to keep my X until next September and then I’ll upgrade to whatever XS Max launches. I did upgrade my Series 2 to Series 4 with LTE.

Indeed. However, I don't know what relevance her age and job is because I do not know what animoji is or how/why it is used. I assumed it was childlike due to the fact that it sounds like some sort of emoji filter/game.

Didn’t realize you were being rhetorical.

II assumed it was childlike due to the fact that it sounds like some sort of emoji filter/game.

Guess you answered your own question regarding the relevance of her age and occupation.

It's marketing dude. That's all animoji is, more marketing bs. It's like some stupid option on a car that is almost worthless but the auto mfr. advertises the hell out of it with repeated ads and some people's brains say "I've got to have that!" Cue Napoleon Dynamite scene with the boat in the glass. Muricans are suckers for advertising and marketing. Companies spend somewhere in the 200 billion dollar sphere per year in the US on marketing/advertising. It's highly effective on many people. Many people, if others were jumping off bridges they'd do it too, just because everyone else is doing it. People could benefit from buying a marketing college textbook and reading it cover to cover.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Anyone who would upgrade just for such a load of crap needs their head checking!

I don't see the need to upgrade every year. For me, the differences just don't make it worthwhile. YMMV.

I upgrade almost every year, and this might be my last year I feel the need to upgrade annually, as my iPhone executes everything I need it To, as it did last year and the year before that. I admit, sometimes I’m drawn in Apples marketing and I’m one that has the excitement factor during the keynote aspect in September. But certain features do really appeal to me, Like the 6.5 OLED display, Which was a nice upgrade.

I went from an iPhone 4, to iPhone 5, to iPhone 6 plus, and I haven't upgraded since. My 6 plus still does everything I need it to, and the battery is in good condition. Only catch is that the phone is a little slow compared to newer phones. Is extra speed worth $800-1100 to me? I haven't yet made up my mind...

I just had the battery replaced for $29 and Apple broke the camera,so the gave me a refurb 6S+ replacement with 90 day warranty. My battery capacity was 89% which is amazing considering it was 3 years old but only had 171 charge cycles. But TMOB gave me decent money for a trade on the TenR,so I made the switch. Happy so far. I was in that "upgrade every year" foolishness cycle until the 6S+ but no longer. Like you,it isn't worth it to upgrade every Fall. I'm on the 3 year upgrade cycle now.

My smartphones so far: iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S (awesome device) > 1st gen MotoG (great Android device) > iPhone SE (lovely device) > iPhone 8. Both the 2013 Motorola MotoG and the 2016 iPhone SE were replaced because they broke, they died.

I just bought an iPhone 8, with an A11 Bionic, and if it doesn't break/die/get stolen, I don't plan to purchase a new iPhone. Not as long as this works and Apple doesn't offer a smaller X. I can't stand bigger phones. I actually had problems to adapt from my SE to this 8, but so far, so good.

This is the most powerful 4,7" iPhone. So, as long as it keeps its performance and battery capacity, I'm keeping it. Will do a battery swap when the time comes.

If I had a XS or XR (I don't because, as I said, I can't stand bigger phones and they are pretty expensive nowadays), honestly I wouldn't see the need to upgrade. Even if iOS 15 required more RAM, the 3/4GB the XR and XS have should be enough, and not upgrading your iOS version is always an option, as I was pretty happy with my SE on iOS 10.2

So nowadays, there's not really a great need of purchasing a new smartphone like there was 5 years ago.

Honestly, Apple should be worried. They know the are going to sell less smartphones. Is Apple or consumer electronics on a bubble? Is it going to explode?
