Welcome to 2014..... get over it! What's the difference between me talking to someone next to me in line or on the phone? None..... PLUS it's not your concern what another does in line, sit there, shut your pie hole and listen to their conversation or don't but who the hell are you to tell others what they can and can't do? People such as yourself really need to adjust to the times..... can't keep up then lock yourself in a bubble and hope the 1950's come around again.
Tried adding this but it didn't take..... Is it polite to speak to the sales person? Sure and I do....I'm able to do more than one thing at a time like be on the phone with someone AND acknowledge another person. I wound't stop talking to a person that was next to me while paying for something so why should I stop talking on the phone to that person? Times change and so do the social norms.... one can be polite to another person AND be on the phone with another.

You are the worst person in the world. Besides, you don't need to hang up, just hold the iPhone next to the reader and BAM you paid. But you shouldn't be on your phone, welcome to polite society (still exists even in 2014)

this does more harm than good at the current time, as too many clerks/cashiers have no idea what apple pay is and may say they don't when their establishments do in fact take nfc/contactless payments.

It's best to download the mastercard nearby app for a list of retailers that take contactless payments and use apple pay there. It's a good idea to say "credit" or "i'd like to pay with credit" because some terminals need to be activated for nfc in order for apple pay to work and the cashier will know what to do rather than get confused by your asking about apple pay.

I certainly think my habits will change somewhat.

The first grocery store around these parts that uses Apple Pay will be the one I shall frequent the most. Just like the ease and convenience of it. I most always have my phone out, but especially in winter, don't want to fumble through my wallet trying to find a credit card that I want to use.

Like the security as well. Especially now after having 2 credit/debit cards breached within the year.

My stratergy will be this going into the store. Will attempt to use Apple Pay (one with an Equinox scanner) at my nearest grocery store and work outwards from there. Will have the phone in one hand and my newly minted Amex card (with chip & signature included) in the other. I shall try first with Apple Pay. If not, then the Amex card get used.

Not that I am overthinking this or anything. Heh.

Awesome! Will try it out this weekend! Last time I went (Saturday) their terminal was just a swipe, keypad and small display. No where to really put my phone like you'd see at McDonald's. Do they have a separate terminal? I rarely use the self checkout.

What do you do for your discount card? I find it easier to swipe my Wegmans card real quick then inputting my phone number.

Seems like it might be less convenient way if I need to scan my phone AND go into my wallet anyway for their club card.

Is their a way around that? I haven't looked but can I add my Wegmans card to ApplePay?
The NFC hardware is behind the screen. It won't work correctly though until after your discount card has been swiped.

Speaking of the discount card, this is where I ran into problems. I had tried scanning the bar code on the key chain version and entering my phone #. Both times, :apple:Pay won't work because the terminal wasn't ready to accept payment. If I swiped my discount card though, the terminal moved to the next screen asking about payment type. I selected credit and :apple:Pay worked perfectly.

No but it's because of lack of options. Only places here that take it are Walgreens that I already used and McDonald's. I eat there free when I'm working so I avoid it when I'm off so never used it there. Nobody else here accepts it. Only major chains are Harris Teeter and Food Lion grocery, neither have NFC terminals. Also have Rite-Aid which doesn't take it and I refuse to go back to that individual store because of horrible service. Given equatable options I would choose a store that offers it over one that doesn't. We do have Walmart but we know the story there.

Good thing about "a polite society" is we can all decide what that means......

----------

I couldn't imagine knowing AFDoc, he has to be one of those annoying people that has no consideration for anyone around them. I think talking on the phone in line while you are being helped by salesperson has to be one the rudest things you can do, I can not stand people like that. I'm sure they have a cracked screen and talking into the phone on speaker also.

LoL because I don't stop what I'M doing to make you happy while in line I'm an annoying person.... Ummmm Ok. Sorry but what I'm doing is more important than what ever the person behind me feels about me... because I don't care what they think about me. IF that person doesn't like me doing what ever I'm doing that has NO, zero, null, nill bearing on their life, then I suggest they move to another line or get away from me.

----------

That's what the self-centered folks keep telling themselves. Doesn't make it true though.

LoL.....So you routinely stop what you're doing because another may not like it? You sound like quite the push over.

----------

No the social norm has not changed. You should not talk to a person next to you while paying, nor should you talk on the phone. It's rude. End of story. Where are your parents! Did they teach you nothing? Look the cashier in the eye, thank them and act like a civilized person. The difference is, when you are talking on the phone you are disengaged from those around you and the place you are in. So YOU are wrong and don't get it. YOU need to get over your sense of entitlement.

Here, read the rules:

http://communitytable.com/60607/ste...on-the-phone-when-checking-out-at-the-market/

"When you’re engaged in a transaction with someone, the bare minimum of acceptable behavior is to acknowledge that person’s existence, not treat them as if they were a vending machine."

The fact that you did not learn manners is very sad. Modern times do not give you a license to be rude in public.

----------

Not surprised that you would up the ante on your original rudeness, by making it worse and yelling at the clerk. Do us all a favor, stay at home and use your phone to get home delivery.

----------

Yes. At the proper time and place. Not acting like a douche while conducting an in store transaction.
Guess you need www.hookedonphonics.com because I clearly say in my postings that I do acknowledge the store person WHILE I carry on my business....... I can multi task as I'm not "slow" like some people.

----------

In 2014, talking on the phone while ordering is NOT socially normal.
LoL guess you shop at very different places than I.

Surely you didn't think a reductio ad absurdum argument would be a valid defense did you? That's rather amateur.

Politeness to others is not evidence of being a pushover, yet its absence is strong evidence of a self-centered arrogant personality.

YOUR ONLY BUSINESS, at the time, is paying and keeping the line moving. That is the business you should be carrying on. It is not talking on the phone or disturbing others around you. It is still rude to acknowledge the clerk while you keep your call going, as the acknowledgement is BS at that point and merely perfunctory, and we all know it. Mere half second acknowledgment while you go back to yakking on a phone is not enough, and does not give you a free pass. Its still rude.

In fact, its rude to the person on the other end of the line with you too -- as at that point you are not fully engaged either in your call or with the clerk. And people on the phone move slower, cause they are doing two things at once. You slow down the line, as it takes a few extra seconds for you to notice that the line has moved, that the clerk is ready for you, or to get your money out. (Same thing happens in cars -- notice the idiot talking on the phone and going 40 MPH in the fast lane).

Its simple, if your call is that important, get out of line and do your transaction later. If the call is not that important, say you'll call them back or don't take the call in the first place.

Here are the rules -- read them, learn them, use them:

http://communitytable.com/60607/stev...at-the-market/

"If you’re on a call that you really can’t end, step out of the line until you finish up. When you’re ready to check out, make eye contact, smile, and yes, greet the checker. Why? Because the person in front of you deserves more attention than a device, and more attention than someone who’s not physically present."

Come now, don't confuse the troll with Latin. If he really can't hang up the phone to use Apple Pay, then there is no hope for him in this world. I can't believe anyone would think Apple Pay is inconvenient. Now an app like Softcard, that takes forever to load, is really inconvenient to use.

Some of you really have some reading issues.... or comprehension issues or both. I clearly said I interact with the person in front of me.... BUT I guess picking and choosing what to "read" makes your fake anger come out stronger.

LoL if you say so.

No you didn't. This is EXACTLY what you said:

Guess you need www.hookedonphonics.com because I clearly say in my postings that I do acknowledge the store person WHILE I carry on my business....... I can multi task as I'm not "slow" like some people.

So you said you remain on the phone, while briefly acknowledging the clerk. Well that is mighty special that you condescend that way, but it doesn't solve the issue that you are now doubly rude, including to the person on the phone with you and the other people around you. Secondly you failed to address the slowness issue, since you are not fully paying attention and it is still rude to be on the phone. Did you not read the rules?

First can I just say that I love how everyone BUT the guy who talks on his phone whilst checking out is getting up votes? Makes me happy to love another day #

I'm in Canada where we have NFC at about 60% of the places I go. I love using "tap to pay" on my credit card and love using  pay even more. I've changed my habits in that I have to use my U.S. credit cards to make it work, as it's not yet launched here. However, I have a small business that receives payments in US$, so it's easier for me to just use it and pay the CC international transaction fee of 2%, than it is to get a wire transfer for the funds. I love the security and I love only having to carry around a small wallet with an emergency card and my driver's licence!
