Ignore impreza98 and bring that back to apple. With that kind of damage you could almost sue apple so i'm sure they will be as willing as possible to make you happy. A nice new Unibody MB wouldn't be out of the question. :)

Exactly. I understand they get hot but it should never get hot enough to damage anything! That could have very easily burned his house down. I would stress that point to Apple.

I know someone that the EXACT same thing happened but it was with a portable dvd player. The company replaced the dvd player with the newest model AND replaced a $900 table that was also damaged.

whats wrong with you two? Apple clearly states that this can and will most likely happen. Also, heat alone cannot seat something like your carpet on fire, might melt it but it could never burn a house down

This is ridiculous!! "Heat cant set anything on fire" ???
Have you ever heard of something called a flash point? Heat alone CAN ignite a fire. Its a fact.

"Apple clearly states that this can and will most likely happen."- I must have missed the part in the manual where Apple says your MacBook's charger will 'most likely' burn your house down and destroy your MacBook.

Didn't you read page 666 of the manual?

Page 666 of Apple Manual said:
Note: Melting of the Macbook Powersupply is normal behavior. Please refrain from touching the live connections inside the power supply as this may result in death.

This death is not covered by warranty**.

**Unless you have purchased Apple DeathCare[TM]

Wow people. This is clearly apple's fault. A power adapter is not supposed to get hot enough to melt plastic. This is clearly a manufacturing default, and should be replaced by apple. Also, in no documentation does apple state that the power adapter can get hot enough to melt anything. Even the Xbox 360's power brick doesn't say that anywhere...

Wow, I have never seen any power adapter get that hot! that is totally unexceptionable I don't give a S%# who makes the adapter, there is something wrong with that one!

No where in the manual does it say that I can use my MacBook as an umbrella. So I guess if I take it out in the rain and it breaks, Apple should replace it, right? And you know what, since it's their fault and all, they should give me the NEW Macbook model for my troubles.

Sorry guys, but a MacBook is not designed to be used under extreme temperature conditions.

He left it charging in a drawer over night. I'm not exactly sure how well it was ventilated but I would bet it wasn't well. Poor air circulation can cause safe operating temperatures to increase to dangerously high levels.

The power adapter under those conditions is obviously expected behavior. Try wrapping your adapter in a blanket and leaving it charging. I guarantee that if you leave it there for long enough it well get hot enough to burn you.

Now image that you left that hot adapter sit on top of your MacBook for 8 hours. This is nothing more than a case of extreme negligence.

sometimes when you do stupid things you have to live with those mistakes

if your lucky they will do something about it. if not i'm sure you will be more careful with your electronics next time....it's only a computer....unless you were planning on using it for the remainder of your life i'm sure you'll live and will be able to replace it with time.

Even if the guys warranty was up, do you actually think Apple would let him continue using that notebook? I highly doubt it. They would do something about it because the next thing they know, they could have the worst reputation in the world because someone's house was on fire over a little MacBook.

yes but flash point fires(although occurring frequently) require the material to be incredibly dry and could never set on fire a plastic floor, any wooden/laminate furniture/carpet. its just not possible, it could melt it but not set it on fire(unless it was so dry that it was about to turn into fibers)

and apple clearly states that it has to be kept well ventilated and preferably on a hard surface, anyone with half a brain can infer what will happen when heat can't escape from a drawer...durrr

i feel bad for the youth

also about flash points - they refer to liquids

That power adapter must have been really hot to actually distort the plastic...! Definitely not normal, mine has never felt very much hotter than the bottom of my whitebook gets, even when under full load + charging battery.

I think all of the Apple apologists should be rounded up and tied to a chair with MacBook power cords overnight.

I would like to point out, that it doesnt look like the actual plastic melted, but more so that the rubberized "soft-touch" coating has bubbled up. Which could be caused by a high heat.

I just picked up my apple adapter off my carpet, and it was really very hot, hot enough to make a thin coating of that soft-touch stuff to bubble up.

What I am curious about, is how that cable got that hot. My power extension and magsafe cord never gets hot.

Seriously. I remember why I stopped coming here and why I dislike the Mac community so much.

Hi All
The results are in and....The Apple Store had no idea what had happened and had never seen this before. They did determined that is was not the Power Cord that caused the damage. If it had been then the LCD would have a burn mark on it as well...which it does not. It was considered accidental damage and will not be covered under the warranty. However they are submitting the case to their tech people and if they are interested in investigating they will contact me. Bummer. Good news is the computer still works, its just not as pretty as it used to be :(
Thank you again for all your help

Umm, what did you tell them?

And if I were you, I would contact Apple Care directly by phone and ask for something to be done.

I don't understand why you're taking apple's side here, but once again, those temps were caused by apples faulty adapter. I have mine in tight quarters every night, and it has never exceeded safe temps.

To the Op, call applecare. Even if the Apple Store won't replace, I'm sure that you have a chance there. Make sure to stress that their adapter caused that to happen.

Try another store, them submitting the case won't do you any good. At the least, call AppleCare like others have suggested.

E-mail your story and these pictures to sjobs@apple.com

Call Apple and demand a replacement laptop. Absolutely unacceptable.

i agree 100%. this is the fault of apple's faulty adapter, they should have replaced it right away and then begged him not to sue. i cant believe anyone is actually taking apple's side on this. FANBOYS SUCK. i mean seriously you've got to be pretty stupid to take apple's side on this when its so clearly their fault.

How can it not be the adaptor? what else runs at over 100C other than the CPU which wouldnt cause this type of damage anyway. Thats ridiculous. However people should note, make a case file with Applecare by phoning them before going and talking to a Genius in an Apple store, because then the Geniuses get scared as you know the system and are more likely to fix it or replace it for you.
