So do you think the original iPhone isn't a black iPhone? It has black front/silver back just like the 6/6+ in Space Gray.

No, you're right. It isn't a black phone. Some people (myself included) want a black phone however. In terms of colors, nothing beat the iPhone 5; it looks so sleek, like a batman gadget.

I never thought of it. I suppose I would have to say yes.

Understand where I'm coming from though. My very first, bought it myself iPhone was my iPhone 5. I never really looked at iPhones (although I wanted one) until 2012. I didn't go out to get an iPhone until that year because AT&T, which is not my carrier, was the only carrier that carried the iPhone until 2011. And in 2011 all Sprint had was the iPhone 4S which I don't care for.

My phone before the 5 was black (HTC Touch Pro) and the phone before that was also black (Sanyo Katana). So, my preference is for as much black (and as little gray) as I can find.

I know the 5 is Black/Slate, but even the Slate is darker than Space Gray.

That may explain your preference for it. The first Apple product I used professionally was a Mac Plus. The first Apple portable gadget I bought was a first generation iPod. I've owned countless desktop Macs, iPods, iPhones, iPads and so forth going back over 25 years. The 5 series phones never impressed me.

Because it was basically featureless and all black? I'd submit that Wayne Industries has a slightly higher bar than that. ;)

Pretty cool, I have a lot more appreciation for the design now.

Wait, what's cool "now" that what? Now that you decided the 6 is a tribute to the 2G? Did Ive come right out and say that? Because anything else is just opinion.

There are only so many ways to represent a rectangular phone. Rounded corners, sharp corners, rounded edges, flat edges, tapered, flat, etc. Just because the 6 has roundness doesn't expressly make it a tribute that deserves more appreciation because another phone 7 years ago had roundness. It's just Apple cycling through their design ethics.

I guess when people stop having things to obsess over about the iphone, they make new stuff up.

You DO have eyes, right? There's no question that the 6 series is an evolution of the first gen iPhone design. None whatsoever.

serious question... why do I read so often that people want iOS6 back? Is it the stability? Performance? Or the features? I could totally see the stability being an issue, or performance on an older phone but not sure what people find so bad with iOS 7 & 8.

I updated my wife's 4S from 6 a couple of months ago, and after using 7 for a while, I couldn't stand 6. What do you like about 6? Again... not talking about the bugs.

Bugs play a big roll in an OS lol.

I'd say the design/being able to tweet from notification bar/the dialpad etc etc

Well, my first Mac was a 2001 Titanium Powerbook 400. The first Mac I ever used professionally was a G4 PowerMac 450.

Currently, I own zero Intel Macs. Everything I have (PowerMacs, PowerBooks and iBooks and one G5 iMac) is PowerPC.

And my very first bought for myself Apple product was my iPod Nano 5th Gen (in black). My very first iPhone was a black iPhone 3GS given to me by my sister.

Don't know if that tells you anything or not.

The black one largely is.

What are you talking about? the 5 was the best phone on the market when it came out, black or white. It's definitely not featureless, and it was faster than the 4s compared to the 6 vs 5s. Simply put, all I want is my iPhone 6 to come in black (or slate) instead of space gray. I understand that the aluminum can scratch easier if it is slate, but I had my 5 for a long time and I never use a case. Other than 2 nicks, it looks brand new. Plus, since everyones solution nowadays is to put a case on it, it wouldn't even matter.

I like the bands. They're a graphic reflection of the front bezels. An elegant solution to an engineering problem.

I don't find the bands that annoying as some people do honestly, but I can see where they are coming from.

For me, it's the flexibility I have with a jailbreak and it does not have iOS 7's explosion of color.

I was able to customize my iPhone 5 the way I wanted far more under iOS 6 then I can do now in iOS 7. There are certain features and limitations that iOS 7 introduced that the jailbreak devs can't work around.

iOS 7 also ditched the Notification Center for Control Center. Oh, yes, the NC is still present in iOS 7, but gone is my ability to add widgets to the NC and thusly my ability to add those widgets to my springboard because Dashboard X is iOS 6 only.

Where did I say it wasn't an evolution? Eyes are required for reading too.

My point is that Apple has a bag of industrial design elements it pulls from for the iphone, and it pulled out rounded corners and rounded edges again. Of course it's an evolution from the first iphone. Every phone they ever make will be. But sharing rounded corners and sides does not a tribute make.

A proper tribute to the 2G would share a lot more than just the 2G's silhouette. It would have a chrome bezel and a black base.

This is an example of why it's frequently frustrating to talk to non-designers about design.

I don't mean features as in the speed or the camera or whatever. I mean features as in the physical look of the object. The black version is largely a featureless slab.

Okay. You go right ahead and believe whatever you want to believe while ignoring the plethora of blatant design cues that point directly back to the iPhone 1. No skin off my nose.

lol, you could have easily specified "design features". face it, when 99% of people see the word features, they think of what you mentioned.

So give me an example of how the 5 was lacking features compared to the original, 3g, 4, and 6?

I'm definitely getting used to them. I just remember hating them when I first saw them. I guess it's just carry over. :D

I still love the design of the phone. So far it's my favorite of all the models.

btw, here's a link on the Leica/4S quote from Steve Jobs (if anyone is interested).

Leica/4S

1. Space Gray. No black (the black front doesn't count, I'm talking about the metal case).
2. iOS 8. (Give me iOS 6 back please, I'm only on iOS 7 because I replaced my iPhone).
3. Those fugly antenna lines. To each his own, but I do NOT care for that look at all.
4. Non-flush camera. Seriously? The phone is so thin the lens has to bulge out? I've heard rumors that it's to allow for future attachments to the lens, but it's still ugly to me.
5. It's curved. I much prefer the boxy side look of my iPhone 5 and the chamfered edges.

I do however appreciate the size of the 6+. But, honestly that's about it. This is not one phone I wish to spend the next two or more years with.

Now, to be honest, there was one thread where a poster showed a mod that would anodize the phone to a jet black. It's an additional $300 and I do believe it makes the phone look a lot better. Being able to execute on that option as part of getting a 6+ would be a motivator for me to buy a 6+.

Space gray is not black and I much prefer black for my phones.

I think the first iPhone and the the iPhone 6 are the best looking phones. I think the white/silver are the best looking iPhones too. It seems like the white is just part of Apple. The white MacBooks, iMacs, and all the cables are white. White just says Apple to me. I love my white/silver iPhone 6+, and I think it's best looking iPhone to date.

This is all just my opinion, but I do love a white iPhone.

My meaning was clear in the context I used it and there's really no need for examples since the featureless slab-like nature of the 5 series is invariably the exact thing people point to when comparing it to other iPhones and saying why they like it.

I compared the original to the silv 6+!

Started from the bottom now we're here.....

You seem to be very intent on arguing a point that no one is making.

That may be perhaps why I like it (my iPhone 5) so much. It's a minimal design.

Obviously though, a reason you dislike it so.

Nope. I already said why I dislike it. To my eye the design is a compromised version of the iPhone 4 series. I even detailed why that's the case.

What are you even blathering about?

I re-read your post again and now I see your meaning in context. As for why people like it, you might be right. I just like having one solid color and I tend to prefer black over space gray

My wife has the white iPhone 5. To me it looks absolutely stunning. It's a great look and I don't discount it. I have two iBook G4s at home and an iMac G5. All white. They look great too.

But as much as I can appreciate them and your preference, my own preference leans toward black. Sadly, black is just not an option with any model of iPhone after the 5.
