Does anyone know if there is any difference between the OEM and Retail versions of this drive?

Amazon is selling both but for some reason the retail box is cheaper.

Retail just comes in a fancy box, while the OEM will come in bubble wrap, so go with whatevers cheaper :)

Btw, I HATE best buy with a passion, but if you don't feel like waiting, they're the same price as Amazon + you get 10 dollar gift card if you order online and pick up in store.

PS I just got my drive a few days ago and its whisper quiet with no vibrations.

I saw that at Best Buy too. For me the cost ends up being about the same even with the $10 gift card. I have Amazon Prime so I can get free two day shipping and also avoid CA sales tax. Thanks for looking out though. :)

One thing I do vaguely recall reading was that the warranty differs on OEM drives. Something about the warranty being through the retailer instead of the actual manufacturer? Is that correct?

Installed wd Scorpio this week. No problems so far. There is a nice guided video on macsales.com/sparedrive. It will walk you through everything. I hooked up new drive with external drive case via usb. Formatted and installed mac os on it. Ran updates then used migration asst. Installed new drive and was up and running.

Just upgrade my drive along with RAM. There is a noticeable wooshing sound as well as a click sound about every 15 seconds or so. I haven't read all the posts in this thread yet so I'm not sure what's causing this, if it's the drive or the MBP. I'm also still getting beachballs randomly. So much for Macs being trouble free. Maybe SL will fix these issues?

Which MBP? Did you see this?

June 09 13.3". Looks like that "fix" is for Seagate 7200.4 drives. The clicking does get irritating. An Intel SSD would be nice... Maybe I'll install Win 7 RC to see if it still clicks, then I'll know if it's the drive or OS X. Anyone know?

I've had both a Scorpio Black 7200 & Scorpio Blue 500GB in my 13" without any beachballs or strange noises. The Black vibrated a little too much for me but the Blue is super quiet & vibration free. Maybe you got a bad drive.

I had beachballs with the stock drive. It doesn't happen constantly like some people state, but randomly. Maybe a website i'm going to causes it or something.

I installed a 500g 5400 rpm Scorpio Blue in my mid 2009 13" uMBP. Its been 4 weeks, have seen none of the issues discussed here.

I guess I got lucky...

In June, I upgraded my White MacBook's hard drive to the 500GB Scorpio Blue. Anything is working great except for this:

When I was taking out the old HDD, I removed it too quickly from the bay. Consequently, I broke the rubber track inside the bay and I couldn't put the new drive in. I had to take it to my local Apple Store for them to superglue it back together (which was done in about 30 minutes). Even though it was my fault, they still did it for free.

But all that isn't the drive's fault. I've been running on it for more than two months now and I love it! I also do know that I have a MacBook and not a MacBook Pro, but it's the drive that we're discussing here :D

I went back to the stock Hitachi. After looking at the Hitachi drive I'm a little curious if it's made specifically for Apple as there is an Apple logo on it and it says Apple firmware.. Anyway I'm putting the Scorpio in my PS3 and saving for the Intel X-25m Gen 2, I don't need a lot of space, but want the speed and quietness.

...As for warranty issues, there should really be a sticky in each forum because this forum always gets a thread or two everyday asking will it void my warranty and I think it's as important as which RAM to buy or which computer suits people and they have a sticky for those.

I agree, as Im in the thinking process of updating my ram and hdd.

That'd be two of us. The 500GB Scorpio Blue has performed so well that we installed one of them in all of our four Apple Notbooks .... not one has any issues at all.

I guess if there are any regrets, we regret we did not switch over to them sooner.

I definitely did, the machine wouldn't turn on. Went back to stock HDD and it was fine.
