Could be the enclosure (and it's controller) or could be the HDD. Did you try to insert the HDD into your MacBook and run Disk Utility off the installation disc to see if it can detect it?

No I didn't try that yet. I wanted to use CCC first. :/

Stupid question, but did you make sure that the connections to your Scorpio were properly attached before you closed the enclosure? Can you hear the disc spin after you connect it to your mbp?

My WD 500GB Scorpio Blue drive failed yesterday ...

I have an early 2008 17" MBP ... the drive replaced the original 250GB Hitachi.

The failure is strange ... the S.M.A.R.T. status was verified, but it failed to "verify/repair" and it was making a quick buzzing sound that sounded like it was doing a bunch of fast seek operations. I tried reloading the OS, but it failed about 2/3 of the way into it with disk errors. I am currently writing zeros to the drive in prep for sending it back to WD. I own a second one of these that is in an external enclosure and I ordered a replacement yesterday from NewEgg. Assuming the zero's write works, I will probably use a PC or Linux system to poke around the drive a bit. I had expected that the SMART processor would handle bad block forwarding without any intervention. Based on the fact that I was able to get all but a dozen files copied off the drive tells me that the damage is fairly limited. This was not a traditional head crash.

The moral of this tale is ... backups, backups, backups!!!!

Not me, but here's someone who got loud clicks with their WD Scorpio drive. Seagate FTW!

He's not the only one apparently. Maybe there should be a dedicated thread (with a poll?) where everyone with WD scorpio blue drives can state their various setups and if they're getting the clicks or not, see if there is a link somewhere. I have a 500GB Scorpio blue in my white SR Macbook and it is totally silent.

Yeah, it's spinning for sure. The light is "on" on the device enclosure, and it does spin. It seems to work fine....it's just not showing up anywhere.

Rebooted several times and it all of a sudden saw the drive. ??

Using CCC now to get it set up to install. :)

Thanks for the help though. You guys are always super cool to try to help me. I appreciate it a lot.

What about the 4 studs form factory hard drive?

As other people have done, I also installed a 500GB Scorpio Blue in my new 13" MBP and so far (knock on wood) I haven't experienced any clicking or other unusual sounds and seems to be working great.

It doesn't seem that anyone has mentioned this but did anyone remove the 4 studs (2 on each side) of factory hard drive? I tired every allen wrench key that I owned but could not remove these little buggers! You need these to remove these stubs and install them on your upgraded hard drive so that the hard drive is mounted securely or it will rattle in the case.

I ended up custom making my own from plastic studs that I had left over from a computer screws bag collected from over the years.

You need a Torx screw driver to remove the studs. I forgot the size.

Maybe the lack of those is the culprit for the weird noises :-/ hopefully.

It's in and working. I can't hardly tell a difference in loudness. No clicks, no buzz, no fan type noise. Maybe I got lucky?

Really satisfied thus far.

i'm thinking of whether to upgrade my early 2008 200GB hard drive to the WB scorpio blue 500GB. I kinda don't want to do the switching of the hard drives myself. I screwed up a mod not too long ago. can we bring it to an apple store and let them do it or they won't help at all?

It's fairly easy to replace the HDD. Follow the user guide (came with your MBP). Be gentle with the screws.

If you are not confident enough, probably need pay somebody else to do that.

It's very easy. Make sure you have *the right tools* though (Phillips 00, and Torx T6) on hand or you'll strip the screws. Other than that, it's as simple as undoing some screws and plugging in a cable.

Buy an enclosure for the drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the data on the drive in your computer to the new drive (takes about 3 clicks), and you're ready to go.

:)

Hello everybody. I recently purchased a Scorpio Blue 500gb and installed it in my uMBP 13". Replacing the drive was a PITA since i didnt have a T6 screw driver:(. went to a friends house and he helped me out. After installing the drive and the OS, i found the drive to be quite louder than the default 160gb Fujitsu. Although not extremely loud, i found that putting pressure on the arm rest (above the hard drive) makes the drive quieter:confused: Anybody else experience this? Does everybody else with a 13" mbp get the same result when putting pressure above the hard drive?

tl;dr: The drive is quiet. But becomes quieter when u put pressure on the aluminum above the hard drive

I have the exact same problem, I know someone else does too. I have contemplated taking it apart to put some sort of pad in there to apply pressure between the HDD and case to absorb the fanish.
What do you guys think, am I crazy?

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing actually. Anybody else have any ideas on how to keep the pressure constant? The drive itself is very quiet, and under any situation where there is some sort of background noise, it will easily wash away the sound of the hard drive. However, under extreamly quiet situations (middle of the night) id rather have the drive be as quiet as possible.

Try maybe putting some foam or something, and post back. id be curious on how much of an affect it has

I wonder if there would be a decent way to measure how much noise difference I would get, anyone have any ideas? I am figuring recording the audio using the built in mic at night or something would do the job, not sure what software I would want to use.

lol that wouldnt do really. u would need a device that measures noise in decibels. Im going to try and put some foam, and a piece of antistatic bag between the hard drive and the case. or maybe re tighten the screws and rubber mounts:eek:
