I agree. I'm not sure I would ever buy a brand new one because of the huge depreciation they've had so far. I'll probably look out for a cheap Series 2 SS when the next update is released.

Couldn't you say similar things about Swiss watches (not named Rolex, PP, AP)? Even with Rolex, this is why most Rolex you see on folks are 2nd hand.

You could indeed say the same thing. I'd never buy a high end Swiss watch at full retail price either. The shelf life is a lot longer on a Rolex though and you'd likely not be selling it within 3 years of buying it unlike the AW so the depreciation would be far less noticeable in the immediate sense IMO.

It's not really relevant because I wouldn't need to upgrade a Swiss watch every couple of years to keep up with advances in technology.

I've also never seen similar levels of depreciation with Swiss watches but if you do see a 12 month old Tudor Black Bay or Omega Speedmaster selling at a third of the normal retail price please send me a link so I can snap them up. :D

I had Omega HourVision a few years ago...bought at authorized dealer for $6000 (around that number). 1.5 years later, it is worth $3000 on trade-in. Sure, what you see on eBay is an inflated price as these resellers try to turn a profit...around $4000-4500.

Obviously, electronics goods will drop more...but Swiss value is not all as good as many claim.

Some more pics of my FrankenRolex, I've since changed the AW to the smaller silver SS one which looks better. Yes once again I'm aware it's fugly and horrible, que the masses running away in terror. But I like it and it serves it's purpose.

My Rolex Daytona is definitely worth more now than when purchased, so no depreciation there at all :) Sadly, it has pretty much been relegated to the drawer, neglected and continuing to appreciate. In fact this reminds me to move it to the safe deposit box :)

One thing though - while you don't need to sell/upgrade them, you *do* need to service them every few years assuming you wear them. Those services - done at a proper place like Tourneau - are expensive. Like servicing a Porsche or, gulp, Ferrari - it ain't the monthly payment that kills you, it's the annual service

I like the FrankenWatch. I recall you stated you were fusing a 38MM with one of your mechanical Watches. It's different, but unique on its own level.
