Haha I don't know that I'm picky. I'm just defending what I said because you said that my arguments failed?

I understand your point but we are talking about reservations here, not gambling. There are several of us here that are #1 or #2 on the list. Which isn't much of a gamble, even if a few units come in there is still a good chance we can get one. To me that is way less of a gamble than what a lot of people are doing, sitting outside apple stores for hours every morning without even knowing whether they have any :)

I'm betting you'll get them faster than you'd expect. In fact, I reserved one today as well. I saw a few from a shipment of WIFI they received yesterday (they were using to fill pre-orders). I'm not sure how many they received but it was enough that there were 2 WIFI Black 32GB left after they filled pre-orders. I walked from buying one b/c I want 3G.

I think they pulled the online site information on availability b/c it wasn't taking the "reserved" deal into account. The reservations are being done by paperwork and not in their system.

I have not gotten my call. And I had my reservation starting Friday at 5:05pm. :-(. This sucks. I'm praying for tomorrow.

There is no way in heck best buy will get units before apple. Most of apple stores did not receive any shipments since Friday and Saturday. My local best buy explained that they will get some more in next week with just about 2-3 units.

Apple is in 100% control of iPad 2 shipment. It is very very likely that Apple will throw most of them for their retail stores and online stores.

With online orders are being back ordered as long as 4-5 weeks, I don't see best buy getting enough shipments to fulfill their pre-orders. NO F way.

Apple makes less money by selling iPads thru best buy, target and other 3rd retail stores.

In all honesty, apple wants to sell their ipads thru their retail stores and online store.

Your best chance is to call apple store every day and line up for the day that they get shipment.

I don't expect best buy will be able to do anything on this issue. I can see iPad will be on back order until iPhone 5 comes out.

I'm replying on my 32 wifi black that arrived on a Monday morning shipment to best buy. Apple has allocated units to Best Buy. They have a contract and would not want to alienate the largest electronics seller in the US. Some Best Buys even have Apple Employees working there, so they'd be shooting themselves in the foot. I assure you, Apple doesn't miss out on money by selling through Best Buy.

That gives me hope! I was 2nd in the reservation line for the White 64GB ATT iPad (hopefully that is true). Oh well, it has to be sooner than 2-3 weeks of my original Apple Order (hopefully)!

I have a feeling that the 64gb 3G's are super popular but they aren't shipping nearly enough of that type of unit. I can't be far down in the reserve queue (like I said above, I reserved Friday at 5:05pm) LOL, and still no call.

But I hope I get the call this week.

I'm second in line at my local BB for the same model. I have nightmares about BB misdialing my phone number and releasing my iPad to stock. :D

just called my BB as my gf had a missed call on her phone (shes on the list for me). they said they didnt get any today, but that they got two units yesterday lol (both picked up by ppl that preordered). come ooooon apple!

I can't believe people have faith that Best Buy will come through with a iPad before a Apple online order does.

It all depends on how big the preorder list is at the Best Buy for the model you want. If you're top 15 or 20 on the list I would be shocked if you didn't get it before the 1 month Apple is quoting now. Apple is required to give X amount of iPads to Best Buy. They can't horde them all for themselves. I'd expect each store to get our 20 mixed models/week until things start to settle down.

LOL!

Yeah I'm blaming Apple on this one, not Best Buy.

I also have recurring nightmares about Best Buy employees losing my "Flyer" reservation, or making paper airplanes out of it, or putting it to the bottom of the queue. LOL

I have to go to best buy. $225 in gift cards :-(. Just can't pass up that deal.

They obviously lose money selling them through Best Buy who takes their cut rather than selling them themselves. They also don't care about alienating best Buy. Twice Apple has pulled Apple products from Best Buy because BB was doing a poor job of selling them and presenting them to customers. BB had to beg Apple and agree to all kinds of terms to be allowed to carry Apple products again.

Agree. Whatever terms Apple has for providing units to BB you can bet they are favorable to Apple.

Well, clearly a few people have already gotten their BB reservations. Have people who ordered at 1am Friday even gotten their shipments yet?

When Apple changed their shipping time from 2-3 weeks to 4-5 weeks, that's because out of all the iPads they have, a certain # are allocated to their retail stores, a certain # to Best Buys, etc etc. They can only sell online what's left over after those allocations. So no, it's not crazy that some people will get theirs from Best Buy before they would have gotten it online.

Personally, I don't have the time or the patience to call my apple store every single day, line up at 7am every day to find out whether they'll have them or not at opening, etc etc. When I'm in a Target, I stop by the electronics desk just in case. When I drive by the apple store for work reasons tomorrow, I'll stop in and ask just in case. But I lose absolutely nothing by keeping my reservation at Best Buy, given that the deposit is 100% refundable. If I do happen across one somewhere else first, I'm out nothing. If I don't, I think I have a better chance with BB than online. Maybe I'm right, maybe not, but at worst I think it'll be a tie.

They don't "lose money" on BB. They have made the choice to sell to BB, which they wouldnt have done if it is costing them money. You have to account for the fact that Apple is going to get more sales by spreading their inventory to third party resellers. There are no Apple stores within a 50 mile radius of me, but there are probably 15-20 best buys and targets and wal marts in that range. Locals that try out the iPad in these stores might buy one, whereas they might not have want to make the drive to an Apple store 1 hour+ away, or put $550+ down on an online order product sight unseen. The try before you buy element of iPads has got to be huge, and BB/Target/Walmart can help Apple reach an even bigger audience than their own retail stores..

That is no longer the case. Apple leases space in many Best Buy stores (that's why you see some with fancy tables with Apple sanctioned signage and Apple employees working there) so they'd be undermining themselves by hurting the "Apple-Stores-within-a-store" model at those Best Buys.

Best Buy makes basically zero profit selling Apple core products (less than 20 dollars on MBP's, ~5 dollars on iPods). They offer the products to get customers in the store and to sell the margin-friendly accessories and protection plans. Employee discounts at Best Buy are cost to the store plus 5%. Employees get no discount on Apple computers or tablets because the store makes almost zero profit.

Also remember the retailer may agree to take less of a markup to bet the traffic into the store.

Iv been on my local BB's list since 6:30 friday night and still haven't received a call. Im beginning to wonder if it was a real list!

The Best Buy I went to (Centennial Colorado) never got their initial shipment. They had a line of about 75+ people at 5pm Friday. They handed out vouchers anyways and said they would call those who got one. I stopped by after work yesterday and spoke with the store supervisor he said “we are finally getting to the bottom of what happened, they are slowly trickling in, we got a few 64gb today (yesterday), I hope the rest show up soon" It sucks, I was like 10th in line and im still waiting.

Some of you really don't know how business works...

Apple doesn't lose money on iPad they sell, period. But, if they sell it thru third party retailers, then they lose some of the profits. How much? Who knows...

However, they certainly have to cut their profit and give some to best buy, period.

Even if apple lost 20-30 dollars on iPad per unit, then some of you might say that's not a lot of money.

Well... wtf....

Multiply that 20 dollars by millions, and see how much money apple will lose.

It has been widely known that apple was able to price iPad at 499 dollars because...

1. They order a lot of parts.
2. They try to make their own custom chip rather than relying on nvidia or intel
3. They distribute their ipads thru apple store. Best buy, Walmart and others sell them, yes. But, they are there because apple doesn't have apple store all over the United States.

In the end, apple store and online store will get a lot more units than best buy and other retailers will.

BB will get shipments, yes. When? No one knows. How many? No one knows.

Apple will supply their iPads on their customers first. BB? Few... Very Few...

You want to take the chance? Go ahead.

Was it a Flyer with Check Boxes that said iPad 2 is here! And did you have to write you name and number on the top?

LOL. That's how my reservation happened. Then they took $100 bucks and moved it to a gift card.

5:05pm Friday night for me. So don't feel too bad. 64GB AT&T Black.

Uhmmm no. I used to work for best buy. Best buy does make money on selling MBP. It's a little bit more than that... It's not 5%.

Apple makes more money by selling it thru their stores and online rather than giving it to best buy. 30 dollars is nothing to laugh about when you are selling 10 millions of these.

There are Best Buys everywhere so it's certainly more accessible for a lot of people. Reduced profit on hardware sales can certainly be made up on sales of accessories and app store purchases.

Yeah, and Chiquita loses money by not selling me bananas straight from their website. You're assuming that all of the millions of best buy sales would still exist as transactions if everything was sold directly by Apple.com and Apple stores. But like you said, not everywhere has Apple stores hence apple's decision to allow BB to sell iPads. So, apple would be losing money by NOT selling to BB, because there are a ton of people (not us on macrumors) that otherwise would not buy an iPad if their only choices were apple stores and apple.com. Retail distribution gets the product out there.

I'm sure Apple has done analyses on this, they surely don't lose as much money by selling to BB at a small loss than if their products were not in BB stores. You act like we are the ones who don't understand business, when Apple is the one who decided to use BB as an inventory channel. Are you saying they don't understand business?

I promise you that it is less than 20$ on the baseline mbp. iPods are often sold at cost. Apple has a more intimate relationship with Best Buy than other retailers. As far as I know, no other retailer has permanent Apple employed consultants in the store.

Any small lost profit on the iPad at Best Buy will more than be made up by volume sales when it is more readily available and by volume sales of the Apple Branded accessories. Multi-billion dollar corporations have deals in place before launches in order to guarantee they get X amount of each production run.
