It actually has and I'm annoyed with myself because I spent loads of money on my laptop. The only things I really use my laptop for now is PC gaming, as a Plex server, being productive (MS Office, job and PhD applications etc.), or simply running software that the iPad can't. Almost all my web browsing, YouTube watching and music listening (via Bluetooth speakers) is now done on the iPad.

But I can't buy a cheapo laptop in future either because I'm a PC gamer and I need my laptop to play the latest and greatest PC games. Due to my living situation, desktop isn't really suitable for me.

First world problems.

Good question. As a lot of people have said, it depends on your needs. For me, I have an iPad mini 2 (128GB) and a 15" rMBP. Would the iPad replace my rMBP? In a word, no.

I enjoy using the mine, especially as a portable, consumption device that I can stick in my purse. It's great for surfing the Web, checking e-mail (but not responding to long ones), texting, and reading ebooks. I need my laptop for programming, writing class notes and lesson plans, photo editing, and just like the larger screen and keyboard. Those are requirements for me that cannot be fulfilled with an iPad, no matter what the size.

When thinking about this question, I know I could not live without my laptop. Although I really like my iPad mini, and find it very convenient for a lot of things, I could live without it.

Hasn't even come close to cutting out my laptop use. There are a few specific apps that I enjoy using more on it than their web UI counterparts. eBooks/comics go to the iPad as well. Generally I could easily live without my iPad, but why would I when I can have both?

At work I use a PC and an iPad Pro at home I use an iPad Air, almost never use my PC or MacBook Pro.

I either use my desktop or the iPad for most of my computer usage. I bought the cheapest laptop I could get (non-Mac obviously) because I knew it would not get used very much.

Well today I went out and purchased a 32gb version with the pen and apple keyboard and cover. I am really enjoying this device. I am going to test things out and I am pretty sure that I will be able to eliminate my rMBP 13 inch with this thing for work when i am out and about on a daily basis. I still have a Mac mini at home for the heavy lifting.

I will give an update in a week or so

Yes, I use my iPad pro for both work and leisure nowdays, I have no need or desire at all to go back and boot up the macbook again. The macbook or any laptop at all really feels like something my grandfather would use, my view of the whole "personal computer"-thing has changed completely. I have adapted my workflow and found solutions for all my work-needs in a way more satisfying and fun/creative way to work. I love it!

Got the apple pencil, the keyboard/cover and installed the app Workflow = done.

curious what type of employment everyone has that is eliminating their laptop use

Fair question. I am bi-vocational: Engineer/MBA by day who does data analysis work and (until recently) a youth director/MDiv at a large urban church. Since my day job supplies the laptop for the number crunching, I can consider reducing or eliminating my laptop use in the church work (where I provide my own gear). However, I have found things that I cannot do on the tablet that, probably, will require me to keep around my Macbook. I still think that I'll use the iPad more than the laptop going forward.

I was really thinking about investing into a MBP 15" until I realized how expensive they are.

After thinking about it for quite some time, I realized I rarely even use my current HP laptop because of my iPhone and mainly because of my Air 2. I no longer have to use it to pay my bills thanks to apps and I can download my iTunes music/movies Library without a laptop. If I need a larger view, I can airplay my screen to my tv.

I think what sealed the deal for me was being able to do my taxes right from my Air 2.

Does anyone else feel like they no longer need a laptop?

An iPad is a useful for consumption of data in short bursts. Maybe the occasional email but beyond that you need a real computer. The rigidity of iOS makes it cumbersome for compare and analysis. It's nice but not a necessitity insofar as if it were a choice you'd leave the toy at home by taking the real tool.

Most people I've met who say they can't abandon their laptops are that way because they can't wrap their heads around touch screens and tablets in general. They're used to the old way of doing things

Or they want to get real work done so use a laptop.

In my opinion, this is the same reason voice input like Siri and Google Voice hasn't taken off. People feel awkward talking to a device in public, especially if there's a chance they have to repeat a command because their phone/computer didn't make out what they said the first time. In our home, we control the Xbox with voice commands all the time. They are so convenient and useful when dealing with a toddler. However, I can probably count on 1 hand how many times I've used Siri around other people.

I talk to humans or the dog but I don't now and never will talk to a machine. It's beneath me and when I'm forced to, e.g. Verizon, then they only hear expletives. Technology is there as an enabler not as a hinderance so when it comes to interface changes, don't.

Yes, my iPad Pro has made a huge change in my usage of the other devices in my home. My MacBook Pro has been feeling pretty lonely as of late. My iPad Pro won't replace my Mac Pro that I use for downloading, multiscreen tasks, and other heavy use but it has pretty much eliminated the need for me to use my MacBook Pro.

I have gotten the iPad Pro with the keyboard and pencil to fully replace my MBP. However, I still use the iMac that I own and use that for anything that I would need OS X for. So far (about a week into my IPP) I am not missing my laptop at all! The way I have started using my laptop has changed to more of web browsing with the occasional Word document use which now I use Word on the iPad. So I would say that yes, my iPad has killed my laptop use and I am happy to say that the Pro is a great device to do so, but still has its limitations.

I agree with you completely. I plan on purchasing an iMac later this year (5K!!!) and will use the iPP on the road. The battery life on this thing destroys any laptop I've ever used, MBA included.

Admittedly, I hated on the iPad Pro and didn't think it was a good device when it was initially announced. It was one of the first products that I had zero interest in from Apple. I ended up purchasing a 128gb LTE model and I've only had it for about a week, but I've seen my laptop usage decline significantly. I wanted to give the device a fair shot so I didn't even bother taking my laptop out of my back for an entire weekend. To my surprise, I found myself more productive by not using my laptop. The only theory I have on this is that I'm not juggling several windows at a time and becoming distracted. Do I need my 15" rMBP and Thunderbolt Display? Yes, I do graphic design during the week and I'm reliant on tools that aren't available on the iPad, nor would I attempt to use it for what I do. Work aside, do I need my laptop? It doesn't appear so since it's still sitting in my bag.

My only concern is that I could have bought a MacBook for the money I spent on the iPad Pro, smart keyboard, and case. I know these are two different experiences, but I keep thinking about cost. I'll more than likely end up keeping the device as I don't need another laptop.

As much as I am loving my Air 2, I must say, the laptop comes out when I need to do actual work, nothing beats a mouse, a keyboard and some desktop software when I am doing keyword strategies or optimizing accounts.

I'd have to agree and say that I did the same thing when I had an iPad Air 2. I'm not sure if it was the screen size or the lack of a keyboard, but the iPad Pro changed everything for me. It's the first tablet that I paired a keyboard with and it's made all the difference. I can't imagine it being as useful if I didn't buy the Smart Cover. One major annoyance of the iPad Air was the keyboard taking up half of the screen.

"Wow, that is big," is something that I hear a lot these days. I've been using the iPad Pro many days and not even setting up my MacBook when visiting remote offices. In my main office, I use the Thunderbolt monitor which has also spoiled me, so I am unlikely to change that. I have went entire days without even using the computer now that I have this. And being grandfathered on the AT&T Unlimited Data Plan is a huge plus. I was working on a spreadsheet in the park the other day, while the kids played.

In my case my laptop (a silly and "slow" MB) killed the use of my iPad. I like my iPad, but I love my MB. The main reason is iOS. It just is not useable enough compared to OSX. I bought my MB as a travel-companion (internet and reading) but wound up doing almost all of my work on it. My iPad is laying around somewhere while my MBP gets used as the central iTunes repositary.

I thought that the iPad Pro wasn't going to be usable enough for the same reason until I started using Outlook, Word, and Excel for iPad on it. Now, I receive an invoice that needs signed and I can open it in PDF use my Apple Pencil to sign it and send it on to accounting. It's great.

What do you use for PDF software do you use for your iPad Pro? I haven't had any luck with finding a good one to use. Thanks!

My MBA allows one hand to be free so use it often. My iPad Pro is my second screen and travel companion, The MBA is such a better tool than any of my iPads or iPhones and cannot see this changing. I do like 3D on my iPhone 6s plus and my new Apple TV.
I have no need to update or change any products for some on going years now.
Apple what do I need is a watch which has GPS, sim card and camera for when I go running or just don't want to have my iPhone with me.

I have the iPad Pro and also a rMB and a 15" rMBP.

The 15" actually feels like ancient tech now ( just my tastes, of course). The rMB is awesome, and really apples/apples with the iPad P. Also, they both have single ports, which, should be the same i'm thinking.

note: I need to sell the 15". Procrastination is going to cost me :(
