No, it has certainly not replaced my laptop, but it is definately what I choose to pack for travel or for simply surfing the web from the recliner. Starting to read books on it, too.

Not even close...

I bought the iPad with the hope that it would but after extensive setup, testing and use it has failed...

The iPad is an entertainment device whereas a laptop is a business device...the iPad is useless -- even with an external keyboard -- for spreadsheets, word processing, etc. other that at the most rudimentary level...

The only real uses I see for it are e-mail checking, e-reading, music / movie watching, photo management, and web browsing none of which are business applications...

For me, it did. Finally.
I had MacBook Pro 2009, and now, I sold it and got a Mac Mini + iPad combination. With iCloud, there is no more need for a laptop now :)

My iPad3 has a Zagg Folio case with keyboard. My Macbook Pro sits at home and I use it from time to time but my iPad travels with me to work and does pretty much everything I need which is reading, writing, mail, music, surfing and gaming. I never get newspapers or watch news on TV anymore.

I think you may have missed the point as I see an computer in the right side of the image / photo...the iPad has replaced your laptop as an entertainment device but it has not replaced your desktop / laptop for work purposes or has it?

how is the Zaggfolio working out for you?
i was thinking of getting one on Amazon but the price is still rather high ($95)

My iPad was my main portable device for over a year but it's a year in which I've started to write a lot more. The iPad has got me used to being able to stop off in a café and write but it didn't quite give me the capability I wanted so I now have an 11" Air as well. The iPad is now mainly for web access and a bit of light note-taking but if I think I'll want to get anything more done I take the Air out with me instead.

Effectively the iPad made me realise what was possible and the Air delivered it. I still really love the iPad though and wouldn't be without it, but it doesn't travel with me very day now.

The picture is at work. I can't use the work HP for anything other than work so I bring my iPad to do my mail, play music and read. At home I have a Macbook Pro. Before I had an iPad I used my phone but now it stays in my bag.

For people that say yes, they did not need a Notebook in the first place.

If I could only have a single device, it would be a Retina MacBook Pro.
If I had a desktop machine at home (iMac, Mac Pro, PC) I would get an iPad for mobile use if it meets your requirements.

The MacBook Pros just aren't fast enough for my gaming/editing needs, so I need a desktop machine at home. (a Windows PC, because the Mac Pro hardware is two years out of date)

Nothing I do when I'm mobile requires a notebook, so I replaced my old MacBook Pro with an iPad, because it's considerably more mobile, and has significantly better battery life, especially when compared to an 11" Air.

still need a proper computer for classes and writing.
You don't need a computer for writing. (unless you consider an iPad to be a computer)

I am so sick of seeing people say this. It ignores the fact that before the iPad basically the only large screen mobile device option was a notebook!

It's 'replaced' my Air in that I sold the laptop to pay for the iPad, but I still occasionally need an external machine to take care of things. Happily, I have an always-on desktop at home and a solid RDC program in Jump Desktop, so I can generally do things that way in a pinch.

The iPad's still an awesome little thing, though.

I bought an iPad two years ago hoping that it could stand in for a laptop. (My main machine was and still is an iMac.) But it has too many drawbacks, especially when it comes to content creation. For example, typing even a short email is a chore. So I just bought a MBA, which arrived about an hour ago.

I'll continue to use my iPad for Pandora, reading email and browsing. I'm a ham radio operator, so I'll also use it in my "shack" for all of those apps, such as callsign lookups. I don't consider it money wasted.

The original iPad, iPad 2 +3 over the last 2 years did replace my notebook for my everyday tasks.

However since getting the rMBP I've found myself using the notebook most of the day due to the screen and speed. The iPad is still great for catching up on news, browsing the web, reading books, social media and games, something which my rMBP will not be used for much.

rMBP + iPad is a great and useful combination for my uses in 2012

I've seen a few conversations on this site mentioning people using their notebooks a lot less frequent now that they own an iPad.

Based on your uses, has the iPad nearly (or completely) replaced your old computing methods? I am aware that to set up an iPad, you need an actual computer to sync, and doing hardcore production or serious multitasking might be done best on a notebook. Besides those obvious points, share your experiences!

it has replaced my 17" MBP by about 99%. the 1% it didn't replace it on was if i'm trying to upload a file to a website (ie. careerbuilder.com and uploading a resume).

otherwise, my MBP is put away almost all the time; never to be touched.

Add a file system and the device could replace my computers, without a file system its just a pain to manage files.

It really depends on what you're doing with both. For me, I read the news, Reddit, bed-surfing, music, hulu +, etc on my iPad. I enjoy using hardware-intensive programs such as full Photoshop and Flash, Motion, etc, so my iPad hasn't come close to replacing my Mac in that sense.

I also still do a large majority of web-surfing on my Mac because I find it faster and more simple.

Well, so many people bought a notebook because that was the only thing avaiable, but what they really needed / wanted was an iPad, right? So that's what people mean by "you didn't need a notebook in the first place."

That's like saying people who switched from desktop to notebook computers didn't need a desktop in the first place. As technology progresses new products are occasionally introduced that better fulfill a particular user's needs.

True... But it's also true that ever since the spread of the Internet, a lot of people were buying too much computer for their purposes. They only used a computer to surf the web, email and social networking, but they had machines that had the computing power to edit movies or develop software. It's like using a jet plane to go to the grocery store 10 blocks away. It's not quite the same as people switching from desktop to notebook, because people who did that needed the same amount of computing power, but needed it to be portable. Those people still need a notebook and can't replace them with an iPad. Whereas people who say their iPad replaced their notebook didn't need the full desktop computing power in the first place (at least not while mobile).
