Scratches do appear over time because of the dust that can get in between the case and the laptop. My buddy has a clear case so his is kinda scratched. Not sure about satin though.

I have had the Satin one (purple :)) for about a month now and have not experienced any scratches

It was, however, a huge pain to take off in the beginning, but ask you take it off and put it on more and more, it loosens up (in a good way) and becomes easier to manage. I love it! I've taken it off once to clean it, but there was almost nothing to clean!

White MacBook in Green Speck Casing

I currently still have my older white MacBook in a speck case. At first I thought it would protect it and, despite having done to for dents and such it actually cause a lot of scratches. I would constantly clean the thing (as well as my laptop) to make sure it did not have debris in it and despite this over the years it has accumulated more and more scratches. Then again, it doesn't beat the fact that the laptop's casing itself has over time cracked and broken away (on the plastic above the screen where the little strip is located that rests down on the computer when closed). Overall it worked it just increased scratching dramatically. If I do get another laptop I will definitely reconsider getting it. Both my parents have Macbook Pro's and scratches don't really seem to accumulate with normal everyday use. I guess it just depends how you handle your laptop, although I handled mine like it was a golden egg. :/

I wish Speck would make a thick clear shell for my car. Snap those things over my car doors to protect against door dings

Great product
Have it on 3 different MBP/MBA
No scratches
Easy on
Easy off

my speck satin see thru in purple just came today. i actually don't find it that hard to take off. just slip a driver's license or credit card in there and it pops off pretty easily without damaging the aluminum.

if you're worried about additional scratches caused by the case, i'd recommend a skin like wrapsol or zagg. i'm considering one so that i can get palmrest/trackpad protection as well. regardless, i'd venture to guess that any scuff or scratch caused by the case itself is nothing compared to what i'd do to it without the case. at least that's how i justify it. clean it frequently with canned air and/or a microfiber cloth and you should be fine. also- the case doesn't add that much weight or bulk (esp. if you have a 13"), but does add some grip.

and i got mine off amazon for $32, FYI. either way i'd recommend checking out the different colors/textures in person at an apple store- some of the internet pictures don't offer a fair representation. if you have the most recent MBP refresh- the speck's battery indicator button does NOT match up with the notebook's. this has pretty much rendered the indicator useless, but i never used it that much in the first place so i don't think of it as a returnable offense.

hope that helps!

I've had my satin Speck for over a year now and my MBP is still unblemished. However, there are a couple of nasty looking scratches on the shell but am I bothered? Not really, that's what I bought the Speck for. Its fairly easy to take off and put back on once you've grasped a good technique.

I had a clear speck case fitted to mine since I bought it a few months ago so my MBP is still mint, the Speck is really scratched so it's definitely doing it's job!

Although decided to remove it as I've just bought a LArobe Black Addict Unibody MacBook Pro 15 Inch - Black + Wasabi.

With the Speck case on it doesn't fit into the sleeve ! Anyway, still got Moshi palm, trackpad and keyboard protectors still on :)

is the moshi palmguard worth it?

I say go with wrapsol instead. As long as you don't abuse your macbook, a skin is all you really need to protect it from scratches.

I applied it on my old Air once and that freaked me out because the water kept dripping everywhere or maybe I was doing it wrong. Are there places that can apply it for you?

It won't scratch it because its plastic. Taking it off can be a pain though. I found that guiding your finger nails in between the MBP and the Speck jacket and then sliding it off works best

Yup, got a scratch from the case on the bottom of my MBP.

The net result with these cases is the possibility of getting something stuck between the case and the MacBook.. It's not the case causing scratches but the crap getting stuck inbetween.. I've got the black satin version waiting to be fitted when my machine arrives but I've also gone for the Zagg protection as well..

This may all sound OTT but my previous MBP was scratched underneath basically due to dust, small paticles on my laptop tray and desk - the MBP will scratch very easily which is why the Speck case will cause trouble if you manage to get something between the case and the MBP. I'd really looked after the machine well so it was simply caused by moving the machine around on the tray or desk - I'd not noticed anything substantial that would cause the damage so it just shows you..

If hairline scratches annoy you then get something like the Zagg system as well.. Cannot comment on the removing the case causing scrtaches on where the case clips on..

im not sure if ur idea of zagg invisible and speck hardshell would work, it might not fit since theres a small but significant extra layer added on and the hardshell was designed to work with jsut the original dimensions of the macbook pro

Yeah, I was thinking that today! Will fit the Zagg and then see what happens and let you all know.. But, yeah, the Speck fits pretty snug so reckon you could be right.

Personally I think any skin adds too insignificant of a layer to mess up the Speck's fit. They're probably thinner than a standard sheet of paper. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the hard case riding up on the corners of the skin and peeling it up. I had this problem on my phone with the Zagg. Of course, waiting 24-48 hours to let the skin cure to the laptop can make a huge difference, and you can always take advantage of the warranty if dirt gets underneath the corners.

I bought my second Speck case about 4 months ago, came out of the package with the clips on the bottom broken. They asked me to mail it in for a replacement but since I travel I didn't want to go with nothing. I bought an Incase case and have used it with no issues. I find I have to work at it to get it off, but that's a good thing as I know it's going to stay on :). My last speck case I used for over a year and had some very minor scratches on the bottom. The case itself had major scratches.
Good luck with your purchase :)

I like mine. I have the 17" black one and it has a slightly grippy texture. Kinda sucks to cover up that cool looking apple but its still a cool case

No scratches, take it off every few weeks.

how did you ever manage a 17"? that's like half your body weight. i'm 5'6" and 150. all muscle :)

maybe you should get some more muscles, because i've carried around a 17" notebook for all 4years of university . unless you're an asthmatic anemic carrying around 6 pounds in a knapsack isn't going to bother you at all. not to mention i don't have to carry around textbooks because i can have pdf's open and type things out in word because of the high res screen. now that i think about it, the only girl i know in computing (lol) carries around an Alienware laptop that weighs 9 pounds. so if a weakling 105 pound girl can carry around a 17" notebook, i'm sure you can do it too -what with your 150 lb solid steel construction!

i literally laugh directly in the faces of everyone with a 13" MBP with their hilarious 1280x800 resolution. i especially like it when the Facebook chat box takes up half of their screen. then i bonk them on the head with my giant laptop :).

Does the light from the logo not shine through then?

it shines through my Speck See Thru Satin Black case pretty clearly. It's got this cool smoked out look to it though. I like it.

Have a Speck case on my MacBook Pro and I love it! It doesn't scratch the computer and I have never had a problem getting it off.

So this explains my head trauma after class all the time now. Hmmm, i'm gonna bonk you in the torso with my iMac one day :p
