Maybe the 4 cores is chipping in quiet a bit on those tests? Im also wondering since the iris ones just came out if the drivers are even optimized yet?

I'm running it on retina. Haven't tried native. Same, its running really smoothly without lag on mine on the iGPU. Yeah, its annoying that only the most expensive one has a dGPU, but I do understand why they did it :/

I'm guessing its the drivers that's not optimised. It is quite new. The cpu shouldn't technically affect the gpu benchmark :/

I have a powerhouse desktop for heavy lifting but I want a personal portable station that is powerful enough for my girlfriend to use hooked up to an external display when she comes over and has graphic work to do.

I was really excited about the Haswell 13" rMBP as it promised to be the perfect blend of portability and power.

After a few trips the apple store I am disappointed.

There is noticeable(to me) UI lag on all the 13" models I used in the store.
When connected to the 27" cinema display it get even worse... to the point Photoshop takes 3 seconds to register a [TAB] UI change which should be instant and drawing simple vectors on a 150dpi canvas feels sluggish.

On top of that, people are reporting lag when browsing the net which is pretty sad.

Contrast this with all the people saying they see no UI lag at all makes this a hard decision.

I now starting to consider the 15" rMBP and the MBA 13" which dont seem to share these issues and feel very snappy in comparison.

Unfortunately, neither of these machine seems to be "the perfect blend of portability and power".

Do any people here use the Haswell 13" rMBP for Adobe suit work and web development with an external display?

Could the lag I keep experiencing on the 13 rMBP just be from the laptops running hot from being on all day?

How did you connect it to a 27 inch cinema display at the store?

Who knows. Where you running it on the MBP screen using retina or native? I get 400 on my 13 using native 2560x1600. The entire thing is just weird. Most of the time I don't notice the lag and its not always consistent.

Too bad Apple only includes the dGPU with top of the line $2600 model 15 now.

I've been researching this quite a bit because I want to be satisfied with my purchase.

I considered switching to the 15" with dGPU thinking the UI would be smoother but people with this model have been experiencing the same lag/fps drop we are talking about.

The store near me has a 13" 2.4/8gb/256 connected to a Thunderbolt display.
I asked if they would connect the 15" with dGPU but they refused.

Lag is there. If you can't see the lag, you are lying.

I switched to rmbp13 from thinkpad x230t. I'm a heavy Windows user, with some Linux experience, but noob with OSX. I'm quickly getting used to it though, and feel how easy things are for Macs compared to Windows.

I am very sensitive with lags, and I can easily spot Windows Phone (Nokia 920) lagging time by time. I own a HTC One by the way with custom rom, and Android is barely okay, but I wish that was also smoother.

Yeah, it would be great if the lag can be completely eliminated and give constant 60 fps, but with everything else being pretty good, it's not a deal breaker. It would be awesome if they can somehow fix the UI lag with their apple magic, lol. I really like the "More Space" resolution (using 1600p in Boot Camp), build quality (all lines perfectly aligned), and really long battery life (also means less heat and being quiet).

Does it lag less if I manually change the screen resolution to 1600p through terminal commands or such other 3rd party app?

Hi there,
first of all, sry for my english, I'm from Germany;)

Well, as I would really like to get me a macbook pro 13 (late 2013) and read a lot about this "lag-issue" I would really appreciate if someone with this issue could do a little test for me.

There are a lot of users who could fix the problem by doing this (the guy that originally posted the solution got it right from the apple-Support):

"good news here: I just called Apple Support and the guy helped wonderfully!

What you gotta essencially do is: open the finder and then, from the menu bar, click on Go and Computer. In the window that pops up choose the column view and click on Macintosh HD, Library. In this folder you have to move to the trash the content of the following folders:
Caches;
LaunchAgents;
LaunchDaemons;
StartupItems.
Before acting the deleting be sure to copy the last three folders on the desktop, in a way to save a copy of their files.

You have to move another element to the trash and it's something called like com.apple.windowserver.plist and you can find this one guy in the Preferences folder (always in the Library one).

Once done, DO NOT EMPTY THE BIN but close the Finder and go on the menu bar again and click on Go; while pressing the Alt/Option button, click on the Library voice (which is hidden and will appear only by pressing Alt). When opened, you have to do something similar to the other time; so

Look for Caches folder and move the content to the bin;
Look for the Internet Plug-ins folder and do the same;
Again for the LaunchAgents folder (you don't need to save a backup of the files this one time);
Move on to Preferences and look if the com.apple.windowserver.plist is present. If not, go back to the Library folder;
Last, choose the Saved Application State folder and move the content to the bin.

Ok, now again DO NOT EMPTY THE TRASH but restart the computer. You should now have everything working as it was when you got the Mac.

Unfortunately I don't know if this will work for you and I don't wanna assume any responsibility for problems but it worked for me and my MBP is now superfast again.

Hope your one will be ok again and this post will help the others who could encounter the same issues"

I found another proposed solution which sounds very similar to the above one. Maybe you'll try this first cause it's shorter;)

Hi, it's me again.
isn't there anybody left with those lags?! Or why does nobody wanna try the suggested solution? :( It would help me alot for my buying decision. Can't imagine the hardware of those pros is to slow to run retina in simple applications like browsing etc.

So you guys would do me a big favour with testing it!!!

Kind regards

Feels like snappier :) , but the UI lags are absolutely note frustrating, you will not spend your whole time with resizing the windows etc...everything is working fine, and this screen is awesome. I had a macbook air late 2010 which eventually had a better display than the current one and compared to that the screen, the sound ..everything is way way better :)

hi there,

same problem here. i had a mba 13" 2012 and wanted to switch to rmbp 13 because i need more real estate.

i sold the mba on ebay, but had a few days to compare my rmbp and mba side by side. both with exactly the same software configuration and OS Mavericks.

the mba was obviously snappier and i didn't know why.
after reading tons of threads, exchanging the rmbp one time and being frustrated i discovered this thread.

so i downloaded RDM, set the resolution to 1680x1050 (non-high-dpi!!!) and there it is, a snappy rmbp with mavericks.
(for me real estate is more import than a shiny retina thinggy, but also i don't see a bit difference between 1680 hiDPI and 1680 "normal")

i suspect the os isn't yet optimized, but i am far away from a software expert.

here is the link for RDM:

I have no UI lag whatsoever on my 15" with Iris Pro. And I'm very OCD regarding that ;-) (that's why I skipped the first generation).

The 15" also has UI lag when using more demanding software (Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X, Photoshop.)

i tested some 15" in the apple store and noticed a similar behavior.

IDK, maybe your rMBP is different (more ram, etc.)
its not as bad as it sounds, main PITA was for me my regular forum i visit, which has some big wallpaper background and scrolling with high-DPI is very choppy.

what still bugs me, is the long shutdown time. (if i restart my macbook, sometimes there is a blank grey screen for 20-30 sec, while my previous MBA restarted immediately)
maybe this will be solved by a future Mavericks update.

BTW: my config is 2.6 i5, 8gb RAM, 512 SSD

Replaced my first one within the two week period, because it felt very slightly sluggish. Almost imperceptible, but definitely there.

Completely floored by how fast the replacement is. Everything is lightning fast, and what I originally hoped for. Exceeded my expectations. No idea what was holding the other one back (I had applied the EFI update). Defective RAM, maybe?

Using my 13" rMBP with a Mini-Display Port 27" Cinema Display right now, I see no stutter or lag whatsoever...

I have a soccer match playing in full screen (via Flash) on the rMBP and I have 14 tabs open i PS right now with no lag switching between tabs or drawing neither with brush or vector shapes on 300 ppi pics...

I have experienced no lag surfing the internet and I am yet to experience a "touchpad-freeze-up", which I read about prior to getting my computer.

I think if there ever was a lag-problem it was fixed with the OS X update...

My best bet would be that as usual, any performance differences were caused by software (EFI, OS or applications). But if you used the exact same EFI firmware together with a clean install of Mavericks (or an identical disk image) that option is ruled out.

My second bet would be that your first macbook had a different SSD in it. However, though the 128 and 256 GB SSD macbooks can have a Sandisk or a Samsung SSD in it, you have a 512 GB model. These seem to come in the Samsung flavor only.

Defective RAM is very unlikely to be a slowing factor. It is rather something that will make softwarea crash for sure as soon as the defective part is accessed.

CPU throttling due to bad cooling performance could happen with a badly mounted heatsink, but this would only be noticed by doing CPU intensive tasks, not by simple tasks like starting a Finder session or opening Preferences.
