Okay, so it still seems like extra RAM would be beneficial, with no real limit in sight. Maybe I'm wrong/confused. It wouldn't be the first time. :)

It would benefit running multiple applications at the same time. But the real limit is capacity not speed of RAM. Once you have an adequate amount of RAM and SSD, the real bottleneck is the processor. You can store however much data in either the SSD or in RAM but the processor can't handle that much data so quickly. But I highly doubt anyone will have this kind of problem since it appears in extremely high performance scenarios. Think scientists who are running meteorology simulations, protein folding, etc.

For consumers like us, you can use the analogy of eating food. RAM is how big your plate of food is. SSD is how much you can store in your stomach. And the processor is your mouth/teeth/facial muscles/etc.

Awesome analogy! I love it. Thanks.

Any think appe will redesign the case in anyway?

I sure hope so! I'm guessing they won't, but I would thrilled if they did, and I'm not even sure why. I keep envisioning a black/blackish version of the aluminum unibody. Something like the bezel on the black iPhone 5. Or at least a dark grey. They always manage to come out with shell designs that are so forward thinking that they still look modern many years later. I still think the original Macbook Pro look is sleek, sexy and modern looking. I actually prefer that look to the current unibody.

Agreed. I liked the original Macbook Pro's design better, especially with that keyboard. I am also debating with myself if I want to upgrade my late 2008 Unibody to a new Macbook Pro but don't want to buy one only to find out they're changing the shell/keyboard.

That all depends on what you're doing with said computer. The speed of RAM is extremely fast.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1125624/

The bottleneck is still the primary storage device (HD or SSD).

Back on topic, I would like to see a cheaper 13" rMBP. If the base model was ~$1300, I'd upgrade from my MBA in a heartbeat. I love Retina displays, they look amazing. Not to mention the HDMI port, extra Thunderbolt port and thin/light profile. But I personally can't justify the current price.

Here's what will likely happen:

Haswell across the board, 15" MBPs will be updated first and then 13" MBPs
Cheaper price points for all rMBPs
11" MBA 64GB model will be replaced with 128GB

Exactly why more RAM would be better :). The speed is amazing.

When using photoshop, I know my sister's projects take up well more than 8GB ram and when she upgraded to 16GB, she saw a HUGE difference

Tell me about it! I completely forgot about the keyboard. The old style is soooooo much better than the new, chicklet style keyboard. I know I'll get used to it once I upgrade, but currently, every time I use one of my friends computers with that style of keyboard, I can't stand it.

Hello all!

I don't know if it's taboo to make a "predictions" post here, or this early, but I'm on a 2007 MBP and absolutely cannot wait for the new MBPs to come out so I can upgrade from 2.33GHz C2D, 3GB RAM, 120GB 5400RPM HD to whatever is next.

I am personally guessing/hoping for same amount of processor cores but speeds in the 3GHz range, 32GB RAM capability (even if you can't get that much stock), cMBPs to still be available so I can do a striped RAID set up (one in the disk drive bay) and double my data speeds. I don't really care about the Retina display part too much. I've used both side by side (Retina and Classic), and it's nice to have the extra clarity, but I'd prefer the faster internal data speeds.

Well, feel free to post predictions or yell at me about posting a predictions thread. :)

steiney

Well I won't yell at you! Lol!! But I will ask why you are itching to upgrade to something you don't even know if you will like? I refuse to buy a 15" glossy retina display to replace my 17" MPB antiglare screen. Just because they build it doesn't mean I will buy it....

Yeah, I hear you. The only way to get the power of a new computer with current specs is to put up with the chicklet keyboard. I can get a matte screen protector for the glossy display and solve that issue (I do hate glossy displays). And like I said, once I have a chicklet style keyboard, I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's just that I'm currently used to the old style, so when I try to use the chicklet style, the keys seem to spaced out and I always mis-type stuff.

Heres what I would like to see:

Quad core CPU options for the 13" MBP

A dedicated GPU instead of just the HD 4000 (at least on the high end 13")

Bigger HDD capacity

Option to swap optical drive for an SSD

And yeah continue the non retina MBP because I would rather that.

Actually having a 15 inch rMBP with only the GT3 high end, would be a genius way to shave money off the product.

What if it would be the prefered method?

People are wrong when they say that buying the first revision of a product is a no-go. Sometimes mistakes are made with products when they just get specced up. Sandy Bridge increased power and performance a lot for integrated GPUs, and better CPU power. The result was that the MBPs with Sandy would throttle and overheat under load of both CPU and GPU.

If this would happen again with Haswell, it might mean that the machine will have better battery, lower temperatures and lower price if you go with a machine with only integrated, over one with a dedicated GPU.
And then.. Would you wait another year for Broadwell to bring the temperatures and thermals down again(like Ivy Bridge).

Haswell is going to reduce power, but what does that matter when manufactureres keep pressing the power envelope as much as humanly possible?

I hope Im wrong. I hope Apple will find a sweetspot. But we need much better battery. We need to get up to 9-10 hours runtime on a single charge, and lower temperatures even under heavy load over very long periods of time.

I hope we will see the fall of SSD prices. I hope we will go up one size. 756gb will be replaced by 1tb SSD, and thus 256 and 512 will be the new defaults. Having 512gb SSD really should be default in a such a computer!

I would be very suprised if the cMBP was still around at the end of this year.

My predictions

* cMBP's are done and gone
* 13" and 15" Retina Macbook Pro's are renamed to simply 'Macbook Pro's'
*Both 13" and 15" Models shed a couple hundred dollars from their price
*Base 13" model gets 256gb SSD standard
*8gb Across the board is standard for all Mac portables and desktops
*Haswell chips. 13" Retains on CPU graphics. 15" keeps a discrete GPU
* SSD upgrade prices drop slightly
* RAM upgrade prices drop slightly

I doubt all of that will happen but it would be nice.

Exactly my thoughts, the "low resolution" MacBooks will be discontinued, I think there will be a base model retina macbook pro 15" with lower price tag and a 256 gb ssd and there will be a 15 " retina macbook pro for the same price we have now but with 320 gb ssd.

Of course better gpu for the 15" retina macbook pro

And hopefully new retina screens without yellow tint or burn in/image retention problems ...

It would be amazing if the macbooks get the color of the ipad mini/iphone 5 , its beautiful!

Haswell in June: Refresh vs. Redesign

Any thoughts or clues on whether Haswell will bring a refresh (spec bump) vs. redesign (major chassis/screen/size/weight changes)?

I am planning on waiting and picking up a Haswell spec rMBP 15, but I don't know if it's going to be the same form factor or improved. Even if it's the same form factor, I hope they will bump the base specs and SSD size for the same price.

What do you think will happen? Any rumors?

Also is there any word or rumors on touchscreens?

Would it be wise to pickup a 13" cMBP? I like upgradeable laptops. Amazon is currently selling the cMBP @ $1090.

Only if you need it now - even if Apple doesn't make a cMBP you will be able to purchase them around announcement time if you are fine with purchasing from an authorized reseller like Amazon, B&H, MacMall, Etc.

Amazon often sells the 1200 MBP for 10xx.

Nah don't need it now but I don't like how Apple made the rMBP virtually non-upgradeable. If this is the end of the line for the cMBP i'm not sure if Amazon will sell them for less than $1090.

Besides I have $400 in Amazon credits I can use towards the purchase. :)

I like you a lot - cMBP + Amazon = amazing person

I believe Amazon sold the 2011 MBP for about 3-4 weeks after 2012 were announced - could be different this year if there is no cMBP - people may buy them up.

Why would Apple redesign something they've just redesigned?

I'm 99% confident it's just going to be a spec bump.

Without any further reality distortion, Haswell brings you 100MHz more and Intel Graphics that are a lot faster, also a somewhat better battery runtime. No DDR3-1866, and nothing fancy new either.

The most exciting thing that will be going on is the first (nominal) 3GHz 13" Dual-Core MacBook. Remember the Pentium 4? That was a heating element for a two-story house in a PC case at 3GHz, now two of them fit into a 13" MacBook Pro which gets barely warm. Incredible.
