This is not a good look for MacRumors:

90% of the comments there make MR look extremely bad.

Is this what MacRumors is about? Is this what the owners of this site want the world to see when they see MacRumors?

PRSI was supposedly a “cesspool” according to some, but Political News is far worse, and it is public-facing. PRSI can’t be seen without an account... Political News comments are out there for the whole world to see. Maybe you need to turn off comments on any news story regarding race or gender, or eliminate “political news” altogether.

I knew this would be a cesspool within a dozen comments. It took less than half of that. :(

Yes, that is what MR is about because those posts generate clicks. Clicks = ad revenue. That's all the site admin care about: money. Why scare away users and the revenue they generate with rules that prohibit the racism, sexism, and homophobia that run rampant on this site? Plus the mods always err on the side of conservatism anyway. There have been moderators that have used verifiably incorrect information on masking to back up extremely poor arguments in this very forum. That says everything you need to know about the people in power here. Any post about Tim Cook, gay rights, African Americans or women always go down the same path. You can tell there's an extreme lack of diversity among the mod team.

Welp...

We can’t even discuss an update to Zoom without pages of anti-transgender screeds? 😢

I’m not a big “no comments” type person, but IMO, editors should move this to the Front Page and disable comments…similar to the above.

There’s some truly disgusting comments on there which have an awful lot of ‘likes’ on them too. The fact that thread has been published in ‘political news’ would suggest the site is aware there can’t trust a certain contingent to react in a civilised fashion. Might be best to just turn the comments off to save the site the embarrassment?

Turning off the comments would result in even more embarrassment.

I actually agree. There are more issues in relation to this than what the users write in the comments sections of news articles. Removing the ability to comment on all news articles, is not perfect solution but I feel it is the best compromise situation.

Lets just say the multiple issues surrounding this (more issues than the specific ones the OP is talking about) will be a thing of the past if the comment section is gone.

I think this needs to be an all or nothing approach. Just turning off the ability to comment on certain articles (articles tagged as political news) does not solve the core issues at hand. In saying this I would be in favour of all news articles not having any comemnts anymore.

I disagree. There are many places/sites on the internet that have a mixture of comments on and comments off. It's common enough so that people won't bat an eye.
Which is why some people have grown distrustful of media.
On a lot of pages comments are only allowed on mundane vanity fair celebrity news or tech talk stories but not on controversial topics.
A good comments section can keep a news site in check if they report falsehoods or have opinion pieces ignoring facts.

A lot of german news pages completely gutted their forums following the controversial migrations topics and the huge uproar on their forums post 2015.
Even the guardian has cut a lot of their boards on topics which are controversial, and in my opinion it’s a sign that democracy and free and open discussions are in danger.

I understand the motivation behind it from companies but we are getting closer and closer to a state where there are very few big public spaces left on the internet to discuss without such shenanigans that topics “are off limits”.
I still remember the end of the 90ties where the internet meant unlimited freedom.
Nobody knew you were a dog in front of the computer. Today we are a product being sold to ad companies.

tldr;
I’m pro-discussion on all news topics.

Remember Dan Rather and the journalistic disgrace that event was? This is not a recent occurrence.

I'm also pro-discussion. But MR isn't strictly a news site and it's up to them to figure out how to make this site work.

This is one of the (many) fallacies surrounding the concept of free speech. The people who run a website (at least those not run by government entities) are the sole arbiters of what content can and cannot be put up on their sites. Likewise, ISPs and domain hosting services also reserve the private-party freedom to accept or decline business from people who author websites. You can say pretty much anything you want in general, but no one owes you a platform to do so.
