1st gen is better.

On the 2nd gen the form factor is plain wacked. If you put it on a table and type it rocks from side to side. Furthermore I believe that the scratch able chrome was increased in surface area, it covers the side where the aluminum used to be.

The only touch that would be better than the 1st gen is one with an ALUMINUM back, like the surface of the classic.

Do you even have the 2nd Gen. iPod Touch? Cause I do, and i type on it while its sitting on a table all the time. It does not rock back and forth like the new iPhone 3G.

Wow, I never thought of that. I know I put my 1G on the table all the time to type. I'm liking the 2G less and less all the time ;)

Don't listen to him- my 2G stays flat unless I press hard on the outer edges. Typing requires virtually no pressure, so 2G design = no problem.

fake1009 is doesn't know squat- he's just jealous because he doesn't have a 2G.

Wait, so you prefer the first because they didn't add much to the 2nd?

That's quite an odd way of looking at it. For me, as somebody looking into buying his first iPod Touch the 2G is clearly the better option.

Months ago I said there was little the Touch could improve upon. It's a very excellent MP3 player that they've made better with hardware volume control and built in speaker.

Are you asking me? I already said why...because of looks. Hahah even though that is shallow, the differences between the two are pretty negligible to me so the only difference I can see in my mind is the appearance of the two generations.

2G:

+ $80-$100 cheaper
+ Speaker (Quality is based on preference, but apps like PocketGuitar and Labyrinth would be awesome with the sounds played through a speaker)
+ Better battery life (1G: 24/5 hrs; 2G: 36/6 hrs)
+ External volume controls (A big plus: now you can change volume without taking the iPod out of your pocket)

o Nike+ (Usefulness depends on if you actually run)
o Different back (All in preference, though in my opinion it looks awesome)

- Cannot charge with most iPod speakers (You can still play music through it, but this is a pretty major flaw)
- Cannot connect to WPA/WPA2-encrypted Wi-Fi (Could be solved in a software update)
- Not many cases out for it (though this isn't really about the actual iPod)

So pretty much if you already have an iPod touch 1G (original poster) then it would be pretty stupid to upgrade. If you are a new iPod customer or you're looking to upgrade from an older generation of iPods, then this would be an awesome upgrade.

I thought the better battery life in the 2g was because the firmware upgrade? So wouldn't that mean the 1g can too have better battery life or does the 2g just have a new kind of battery?

Really? OK, so then why does it seem like everyone on this board has done exactly that (upgraded)?

Maybe we need another pole?

sorry but this is not a universal problem. i connect perfectly to my WPA wifi at home. and, as another member noted, his problem with wifi was user error. he had enabled MAC filtering on his network and forgot to add his touch.

as to the thread, i would say that probably the 2G isn't worth the upgrade if you already had a touch, but you really can't argue that it is a better buy.
cheaper, better battery, external volume controls & speaker, comes with 2.1, etc.
you may prefer the older case style and you may not care about the new features, but the only real "loss" with the 2G is firewire charging.

No i am not jealous as I usually am of newer products. The minor updates do not seem worthy for me to consider the 2g. I am sorry if I insulted your 2g.

Also are you saying that the 2g does not rock from side to side? I find it hard to believe that with curved form factor it does not rock at all. I mean not all people are "soft" typers like you.

I also like how you assume I am a "he".:D

The only thing I really wish mine had that my son's has is a speaker. Otherwise there is just not enough there to sell mine and get a new one.

I have the iPod Touch 2G, and as I stated earlier in the thread, it DOES NOT rock from side to side when you type on it while its on a table. I don't type softly either. While the outside IS curved, it isn't curved enough too cause problems while typing on a flat surface. I know from experience.

FFR: Don't knock a product because of something you assumed happens or will happen. Try it first.

BTW; here is a link to a video I took to show that it doesn't rock. Sorry for the breathing you can hear and the annoying music, but it at least shows that the iPod doesn't rock around.

That was actually a concern of mine before making an iPt 2G purchase, so thanks for the info.

And, just as a sidenote, you need to update your sig if you have an iPt 2G, yanno. ;)

I want to, but i don't have any room left in my sig :eek:! I guess i could take out the 30GB iPod Video....i don't really use that anymore...i'll see if i can squeeze it in there.

EDIT: I managed to squeeze it in there after cutting out some of the specs for my macbook and iPod Video

I'd drop the bit about the nickname, personally. If people can't figure it out, chalk it up to their stupidity and laugh about it. ;)

And I just noted you did get it in there... congrats. :) Hopefully soon I'll be able to have one listed for myself.

I completely agree with Peabody

Just got a 32GB 2G Touch today, and I MUCH prefer the look, feel and weight of my 16GB 1G, which feels way more solid, and just appears to be better built.

The gap between the chrome and the glass on my 2G is uneven, which makes the screen look slightly wonky when it's on. And for some reason, the very bottom left corner of the glass panel bends inwards when any pressure is applied to it - mildly disconcerting!

To me, it really does feel like (relative) crap compared to the awesome build quality of the 1G. Many people have said the same thing about the 2G iPhone compared to the 1G, so I wasn't hugely surprised when all this became apparent.

Having said all that, I am, of course, still going to eBay the 1G, cos the extra 16GB, the battery life, the speaker, the better screen, etc, certainly make the 2G the winner overall. Just a shame it feels like a physical and aesthetic step backwards.

I have the same issue with mine. Bottom left corner goes in a little when pressure is applied. But it doesn't seem like to big of a problem.

Yeah, I suspect not. Still a bit lame, though, purely from a 'the old one wasn't like this' kind of angle. :)

wow thanks for the nice nice video. Did u make it? I actually kind of liked the music.

You are right the touch does not look like it rocks from side to side though ( although its kinda hard to tell). But what about typing in portrait mode?

yeah i made the video. I have tried typing in portrait mode, and it doesn't rock back and forth.

The back of the 2G iPod Touch doesn't seem to be curved as much as the iPhone 3G. The back of the 2G iPod Touch is only curved at the edges, but most of the back is flat.

This picture of the iPhone 3G clearly shows that it has a very curved back, making it hard to type on a hard surface with.

This photo of the back of the iPod Touch 2G shows that the edges of the back are curved, but the rest of the back is pretty flat.

i bought the 1st gen about a month ago and took extreme care while using it to preserve its resale value just in case Apple dropped some amazing iPod touches... needless to say, I'm keeping my beloved 1st gen.

I wish I could give you a MacRumor Digg for the McCain Palin 08 Sig! :D Nice to See well informed republicans my age!
