We are making progress! My preorder was placed around 12:15 AM PT on launch day (I'm not sure of the exact time because the order originally didn't go through because of an issue with Verizon, but Apple reserved my spot for me in line.)
I ordered an iPhone X, 256gb, space gray, Verizon. It was been "order in progress" and shipping 11/17-24 since I ordered it. But now they just hit my credit card and I moved to "preparing to ship." It still estimates 11/17-24 as a shipping window but I'm hoping that will update soon.
It's probably a coincidence, but in the last hour I went on the Apple support chat to ask why my order wasn't moving up and if there was anything they could do. The support rep said nothing could be done; yet, within an hour my order was moving.
