HBO Max launched today, and is now available on Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. WarnerMedia's new streaming service, which replaces HBO Now, combines HBO content with shows and films from Warner Bros and Turner TV.

The service is available as a native app on the ‌Apple TV‌ HD and ‌Apple TV‌ 4K, but second and third-generation ‌Apple TV‌ owners will need to AirPlay HBO Max content from an iOS device to the TV to watch.

New HBO Max customers who have an ‌iPhone‌, ‌Apple TV‌, ‌iPad‌, or Mac will be able to subscribe to the service, priced at $14.99 per month, using in-app purchases on Apple devices.

HBO Max feature more than 10,000 hours of programming, and costs $14.99 per month during the first year. In 2021, WarnerMedia also plans to launch an ad-supported version of the service that is more affordable.

As far as I know, no 4K, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos support for any content which is a huge let down. Any confirmation on this?
No update since the statement in January:
"4K HDR is a part of the HBO Max product roadmap but we don't have any additional information to share at this time."

I have ATT 1000 and when I go to set up my account via the ATT website I get an error. Anyone else?

It would be nice if they had HBO Max inside the Apple TV app. I’ve tried to get away from stand-alone apps as much as possible, I like the interface consistency of everything in one place. (and no, I don’t watch much Netflix - I find most of their shows and movies overrated)

I am the opposite. I like everything having its own place (probably habit). Apple TV+ for example seems like a mess to me, just thrown into everything else that you have to pay for by movie / episode.

i got the trial to try it out but I’ll probably cancel it. Too expensive. 15 bucks is more than I pay for Spotify, Netflix & Hulu/Disney+ & YouTube Premium combined

It does have integrated Apple TV app functionality. It’s essentially replacing HBO Now, so tiles haven’t yet been updated to display HBO Max but it does work even for the HBO Max originals.

I’m subscribed through Apple TV channels and it’s nice that they were able to merge my Apple ID with my HBO Now account.

So now I can sign in with my HBO credentials rather than the roundabout way of signing in via a 3rd party provider.

What happened to the free Max access for those that have the HBO Channel? I don’t see it working.

Sign in via a 3rd party as if you were signing in via your cable credentials. Apple TV is an option. It’s through the HBO Max app.

Im not seeing TV app integration yet. It seems to not be in the initial release. At least on iPhone.

Edit: Nevermind. I see it now. You have to play something to enable it.

I’m looking at HBO in the Apple TV app on my iPhone - I only see HBO content. Where do you see the HBO Max content?

Thank you Charter Spectrum for the free upgrade! First nice thing I can say about AT&T in about twelve years. Working great here on all Apple devices, but no 4K at this time.

I’m not seeing HBOMax app integrated into the ATV app at this moment. Probably coming soon.

Must say the despite the complaints above, the library is a huge upgrade over what hbo now had. At the same price it's a welcome addition as hob itself was getting a bit stale.

I played something via the HBO max app on my Apple TV then went to the Apple TV app and was prompted to update HBO Now to HBO Max and now it works across my iOS devices too. I imagine it’s just taking a while to propagate for everyone

I never understood the complaints. They’re giving people more stuff for no more money, and it turned into everyone complaining about the name.

Ya I spoke too soon. I had to start playing something before I got the TV integration pop up.

I had HBO Go and it didn’t ask that for me. I just downloaded the new app and linked to my cable tv account and it’s working but not showing appletv app integration yet. No biggie. I’m sure they’ll get it worked out.

So I’m confused. If I subscribe to HBO via Apple TV Channels do I need the stand alone app or not?

Again the rest of the world just has to wait longer or forever to get a new service that is out exclusively for the USA. You even need a USA based credit card to register. So VPN wont help you get it. Well, i guess i’ll just enjoy Netflix then 😅👍🏻

Right now you need the stand alone app. As far as I can see to get the extra backlog catalog. Not even showing up as an appletv channel for hbo max yet.
