Yea, usually rollouts go so smooth on Apple hardware....

I typically don't have issues, but I think this is more so the confusion between HBO, HBO Max, HBO Now, HBO Go, and the combination of Apple Channels, not a channel/has to be app situation. Not really a hardware thing, likely something HBO was not going to implement. If you have the HBO Apple TV channel, all it had to do was update to HBO Max. Done. For the rest, just make one app/service - HBO, it is paid for anyway, now available through cable providers and as an app. Didn't have to be that hard.

The Apple Channel is definitely discontinued. Who knows if they'll return with Max content included. I doubt it. My guess is HBO wants to be more like Netflix and not continue to pay 30+ percent of every sub to the platform holders.

While 30% is definitely the split for 'normals', major companies like HBO and Amazon have custom deals with Apple. Whatever they're paying it's definitely less than 30% — at a guess I'd say 5-15%? But regardless, it seems like WarnerMedia have decided they want to fully own their branding, which is fair enough. For companies of a certain size it probably makes more sense. If HBO Max hits the rocks or the uptake isn't there then maybe they'll revisit the decision, but I feel like their app or bust is the way it is from now on. Channels access was probably their way of testing the water to see the sort of numbers they could get prior to striking out this way.

What really bums me out is that the HBO Max isn't even showing up in the Up Next bar anymore. Hulu and Disney+ are standalone apps and still utilize that bar.

It still works. Make sure that the HBO Max app is linked to the TV app in the settings.

I got it to work. I had to disconnect HBO Now and then reconnect HBO Now. Then the HBO Now setting changed to HBO Max somehow. Very confusing.
